"Within a day, there are days and hours. The counting method for hours is slightly different from that for days. For example, if it is currently the Jiazi hour, then Jia corresponds to 9, and Zi also corresponds to 9. The sum of those two numbers is 18."

After quickly finishing recording, Su Ziyang asked, "Master, is that the last digit of the number obtained by adding the day and hour together within a day, corresponding to a specific acupoint in the Nine Palaces?"

"Here's how it works: we add up the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches of the day and hour to get a number. For Yang days, we divide by 9; for Yin days, we divide by 6. If it's divisible, we use 6 or 9 to select the acupoint. If it's not divisible, we use the remainder to select the acupoint."

"Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, and Ren are Yang days; Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, and Gui are Yin days."

"If it is Jiazi day and Wuchen hour, the number corresponding to the Heavenly Stem Jia of the day is 10, and the number corresponding to the Earthly Branch Zi is 7. The number corresponding to the Heavenly Stem Wu of the hour is 5, and the number corresponding to the Earthly Branch Chen is also 5. So the sum of these numbers is 27. Jiazi day is a Yang day. Therefore, 27 ÷ 9 = 3, which is divisible by 9. This corresponds to the Li Trigram, which is the selected Lieque acupoint."

Yang Tianzheng said all this in one breath, then picked up his teacup and drank some tea.

"During acupuncture, press quickly and lift slowly to raise Yin Qi, and lift quickly and press slowly to lower Yang Qi. First insert the needle deeply, then withdraw it to a shallow insertion. Insert the needle deeply 3 times and then shallowly 2 times. This is the Yin number. Insert the needle shallowly first and then deeply, insert it shallowly 2 times and then deeply 3 times. This is the Yang number."

"Of course, different acupoints treat different diseases. There is a saying: Linqi and Gongsun treat intestinal diseases, Shenmai treats the spine, head, waist and back. Zhaohai treats the throat and lower abdomen, Neiguan treats heart pain. Houxi treats the anterior upper and lateral shoulders and back, and Lieque treats qi stagnation with frequent needling."
