Background / History

Earth, Adoption, and the Greedy Wolf Gang

Zhou Ning originally lived on Earth. A truck struck the rideshare car carrying him home, and he subsequently awoke as an orphaned infant in Chen State, retaining an adult’s mind. A farming couple adopted him 1.

During a severe drought, four-year-old Zhou Ning repeatedly urged his adoptive father to sell him to the Greedy Wolf Gang so the family could survive. His father reluctantly agreed after considering his pregnant wife. Zhou Ning later returned while on a gang mission, but found the village deserted, with no survivors remaining 87.

His retained memories helped him resist the gang’s indoctrination and progress quickly in martial arts. After an immortal cultivator effortlessly killed the gang’s leaders, he abandoned hopes of martial supremacy in favor of cultivation and longevity 1.

Rejection and Service to the Su Household

Mr. Wen guided Zhou Ning onto the immortal path. He entered the Azure Mystic Sect’s selection but was rejected, ostensibly because of his age and ordinary aptitude. He instead joined the Su Household at seventeen and worked as a fisherman on Cuiwei Lake 1 29.

Xu Qinghou later attributed the rejection to Su Yanghao, who wanted to use Zhou Ning’s friendship with the Earth Spirit Root genius Jiang Xiaohua to benefit the Su Household. Zhou Ning initially doubted this explanation, but increasingly accepted it as the household cultivated his sense of indebtedness 5 20 27.

Two Worlds and the Rise of an Alchemist

The jade he had brought from Earth activated after years of absorbing internal force and Spiritual Qi. It gave him storage space and access to a temporary body in the Land of Wei. Chai Dingchun’s belongings introduced him to that world’s meridian-opening system, rare Qi, and cultivation methods 1 2 3.

He exploited differences between the worlds’ resources, selling eel blood in Wei and exchanging marsh-water spirit substance for the incomplete fifth-grade Xinsi Golden Scripture. He also acquired the Divine Cauldron Inner Landscape Scripture, which supported his attempts to learn alchemy 11 16 23.

His second Wei journey ended amid the destruction of Gazing Immortal Port. After a Devil Cultivator apparently killed his young guide, Zhou Ning fought and killed him, losing his false body’s left arm in the process. He recovered the girl’s bloodstained flower and mourned her 14.

Zhou Ning became a first-tier Alchemist by refining mid-grade Spirit Essence Pills. Once his skills became public, he used Gu Xiangning’s sect connection to negotiate employment as a Su Household guest elder rather than remain a fish-hunting retainer 26 32 33.

Withered Wood Grotto-Heaven

During a later expedition, Zhou Ning reunited with He Zhuoran and entered the Withered Wood Grotto-Heaven. He obtained pill formulas, Calamity-Severing Grass, a spirit-binding net technique, medicinal plants, Chen Earth, and a powerful scarecrow puppet 46 48 53 60.

The journey ended when Li Qinglang and Ziwan pursued him after capturing He Zhuoran. Unable to defeat the two Ninth Layer cultivators, Zhou Ning detonated three Fire Furuncle Fruits and destroyed his false body rather than risk losing valuable equipment 60 61.

Foundation Establishment and Retaliation

Despite his increasing value as an alchemist, Zhou Ning remained subject to the Su Household’s pressure and was sent to Little Willow Marsh. He faced hostile Chen Household retainers there while gathering the resources needed for Foundation Establishment 79 81 87 90.

After six years away, he returned to Cuiwei Lake, established his Immortal Foundation, and transferred the hidden Spring of the Spirit Eye into his Jade Space. He then killed Chen Hao and Chen Le after they attacked him, defeated Chen Kexing, and rescued Jia Tingwan from Alchemist Tang 93 95.

He publicly severed ties with the Su Household and declared a campaign against it. His subsequent attacks killed three of its Foundation Establishment cultivators, but reinforced defensive formations prevented him from destroying the household outright 96 99 102 104.

Settlement and Independent Cultivation

Guo Changying negotiated a ceasefire on behalf of the Azure Mystic Sect. Zhou Ning accepted nominal guest-elder status and a future claim to a Core Formation spiritual item, while the Su Household agreed to transfer Little Willow Marsh, supply an earth-vein spiritual object, and establish a defensive formation 104 105.

He subsequently expanded his pill business, treated wounded cultivators during the struggle for Emerald Screen Mountain, and trained Jia Tingwan to take over part of his production. He also sheltered and treated Holy Maiden Hua Ran before her departure with representatives of a greater power 108 110 111 114.

Appearance

  • Natural features: Handsome; his concealment technique can make him appear twenty years older 23.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears black robes or black clothing 77 114.
  • Defensive robe: Dark scales emerge when his Profound Fire Dharma Robe is activated 104.
  • Bracelet: Wears Jia Tingwan’s silvery-white bracelet, which keeps rain from touching him 93.

Personality

Zhou Ning habitually conceals his strength, wealth, and intentions. He accepts outwardly humble roles when useful, disguises himself for market visits, and practices concealment techniques diligently. His apparent obedience to Su Yunjin does not stop him from privately rejecting her advice against learning alchemy 20 23 49.

He values independence and resents having his future decided by powerful clans. His anger toward the Su Household stems not only from personal mistreatment but from its interference with his entry into the Azure Mystic Sect and its expectation that retainers remain obedient laborers 27 73 93 96.

His caution coexists with opportunism and a vindictive streak. He loots enemies, exploits commercial advantages between worlds, and disguises personal revenge as righteous action when confronting Boming. Nevertheless, he warns Gu Xiangning that habitual murder for treasure leads cultivators into the Evil Dao 11 41 54 72.

He reciprocates meaningful kindness: he promises to help Xu Qinghou in trouble, repeatedly supplies Gu Xiangning with pills, and rescues Jia Tingwan. He is also pragmatic enough to accept compensation and suspend his feud with the Su Household rather than continue a dangerous war 31 62 72 95 104.

Abilities & Skills

Realm-Breaking Jade

The jade supports his cultivation across two worlds and provides a true spatial storage treasure 1 2 60.

  • Cross-world projection: Creates a false body in Wei while his original body remains in Chen State; his cultivation carries over 2 10.
  • Consciousness withdrawal: Allows him to return to his original body and abandon the false one in an emergency 43 44 61.
  • Storage: Initially holds approximately two cubic meters. Unlike ordinary Storage Bags, it can contain filled Storage Bags and their heavy contents 1 60.
  • Recharge requirement: Turns white after use and must absorb substantial spiritual power before another journey 2 9.
  • Recorded destinations: By a later journey, three light points apparently correspond to the grove, Gazing Immortal Port, and Withered Wood Grotto-Heaven 90.
  • Unconfirmed protection: Zhou Ning suspects the jade shields him from certain powerful cultivators and the world’s influence; he also escapes a soul-searching attempt by withdrawing his consciousness 44 48.
  • Limit: His false body weakens during a visit. Safety in Wei does not make his original body expendable 14 25.

Xinsi Golden Scripture and Que Flowing Fire

The incomplete fifth-grade Xinsi Golden Scripture produces exceptionally condensed metal-fire Law Power. Its fiery and cutting qualities make even unshaped spiritual power dangerous 16 17 18.

  • Requires True Yang Metal Qi, which has disappeared from Wei but remains obtainable in Chen State 6 9 11.
  • Enables unaided flight after its initial Qi-gathering breakthrough 17.
  • Is bound by a soul oath prohibiting Zhou Ning from passing it on 11.
  • Develops into the Que Flowing Fire Immortal Foundation, associated with Si Fire and containing Geng Metal 93.
  • Supports fire control, pill refining, poison repulsion, and ghost extermination 93.
  • Produces cutting fire crescents with minimal preparation and greatly strengthens his physical body 93 104.

Divine Sense and Fiery Eyes and Golden Pupils

His meridian cultivation develops Divine Sense before the normal Chen State threshold. By Foundation Establishment, its thirty-li range rivals that of a local Core Formation cultivator 9 104.

  • Detection: Monitors the entirety of Little Willow Marsh 104.
  • Artifact control: His unusually strong Divine Sense makes Law Artifacts easier to manipulate, though his early spiritual-power reserves cannot fully support them 9.
  • Fiery Eyes and Golden Pupils: Sends dark flames along an opponent’s extended Divine Sense, interrupting control of a Law Artifact 99.
  • Insight: Reads movements and techniques in close combat 104.
  • Limit: The eye technique cannot directly nullify a physically wielded weapon, such as Guo Changying’s spear 104.

Flowing Light Concealing Shadow Technique

Acquired from He Zhuoran, this technique becomes one of Zhou Ning’s most thoroughly practiced skills 16 49.

  • Alters his facial appearance and apparent cultivation level 23 102.
  • Conceals the unusual signs of his metal-fire cultivation while he pretends to use the Clear Flame Heart Method 20.
  • Benefits from practice three times daily and continued experimentation 49.

Alchemy

Zhou Ning uses the Divine Cauldron Inner Landscape Scripture to simulate pill refining and improve after failed attempts 23.

  • First-tier qualification: Successfully refines four mid-grade Spirit Essence Pills in one batch 26.
  • Reliable production: Achieves a seventy-percent success rate with Qi-Benefiting Pills 35.
  • Improvised processing: Uses Thunder Plasma Liquid to temper Demon Beast marrow, improving pill yield for Fang Tianyu 72.
  • Special commissions: Refines the Thunder-Suppressing Meridian-Continuation Pill for Black Husband in exchange for rare materials 102 116.
  • Teaching: Trains Jia Tingwan and plans to delegate the Lesser Exploding Essence Pill business to her 110.
  • Limit: Progress requires repeated practice; early pill condensation produces defective pills, and experimental batches can explode 23 72.

Jade-Casting True Gold Talisman

A secret method separates and condenses purified gold power into jade. The refined essence can be used offensively or assist in forging an Immortal Foundation 36.

  • Requires jade strong enough to contain Wei’s concentrated Law Power; Zhou Ning judges first-tier jade inadequate 36.
  • Stores prepared talismans within his Dantian and later his Immortal Foundation 87 116.
  • Remains an important reserve weapon against stronger opponents 102 110.

Puppet Techniques

Zhou Ning masters the Yi Wood Puppet-Planting Technique and uses a vine puppet seed to take control of the grotto-heaven medicine garden’s scarecrow 60.

  • Preserves the scarecrow in his Jade Space and later tests it using a Spirit Stone 60 62.
  • Plants a Vine Puppet Talisman in Su Changhe, imposing subconscious commands and prohibitions 105.
  • Limit: Su Changhe otherwise behaves normally; the control is not portrayed as constant conscious possession 105.

Bestowed Divine Ability: Immovable Mountain

True Person Lu places Immovable Mountain on Zhou Ning during his Wei travels 47.

  • Manifests powerful defensive protection 54 58.
  • Withstands Yang Gu’s Gang-Splitting Thunderfire Awl while Yang Gu is a Qi Refining cultivator 58.
  • Is a bestowed power, rather than evidence that Zhou Ning himself has reached the Purple Mansion Realm 58.

Relationships

  • Su Youyou — Formation specialist who installs protective arrays for his courtyard. Her later defensive work for the Su Household obstructs his retaliation 28 35 102.
  • Su Yanghao — Su Household cultivator whom Zhou Ning blames for engineering his rejection from the Azure Mystic Sect 20 27 96.

  • Wildflower girl — Young guide in Gazing Immortal Port who helps him avoid fraudulent cultivation methods. Her apparent murder provokes his fight with a Devil Cultivator 10 11 14.
  • Black Husband — Repeat alchemy client who pays with rare materials and examines the restrictions on his sealed black box 102 116.
  • Pharmacist Lan — Loyal subordinate who handles trades and medical treatment. Returns safely after an ambush involving Zhou Ning’s formidable puppet 108 113 115.
  • Hua Ran — Holy Maiden whom he shelters and treats. She thanks him for several months of comparatively peaceful life before leaving 111 114.
