Background / History

Transmigration and Qian Renxue’s Awakening

Jiang Nian transmigrated when Qian Renxue was born, six years before the opening events. He was originally meant to replace her, but rejected becoming Qian Renxue and waited for an opportunity to obtain his own body. Unable to cultivate before activating his template, he drew on her Soul Power throughout those years 1.

At her awakening, he absorbed the Six-Winged Angel outright. This activated his Yao Chen Template but left Qian Renxue with level 3 innate Soul Power and a Broken-Winged Angel Martial Soul. As she was sent away to Suotuo City, Jiang Nian resolved to compensate her and began selecting a template for her future growth 1.

Teaching in Suotuo City

Initially communicating from within Qian Renxue’s consciousness, Jiang Nian accepted her as his disciple, assigned her the Seraphim template, and transmitted the Flame Mantra. He prioritized physical conditioning and medicinal baths over rapid Soul Power growth so that she could eventually withstand a thousand-year first Soul Ring 2 3.

After Ling Yuan left, he appeared physically to comfort Qian Renxue and took responsibility for her daily care. He then moved her training into the Soul Hunting Forest, combining live combat with medicinal treatment. Selling two bottles of pills for 500,000 Gold Soul Coins supplied the money they had initially lacked 4 5 6 8.

In the Star Dou Great Forest, he helped Qian Renxue obtain a two-thousand-year Flame Dragon Lizard as her first Soul Ring. When her Soul Power rose unstably to level 16, he compressed it to level 15 rather than sacrifice her foundation for a higher displayed rank 13.

Ah Yin and the Formation of His Following

Jiang Nian met Ah Yin while staying in a village near the Star Dou Great Forest. He taught her diagnostic and treatment methods, recognized her Soul Beast identity, and warned that Tang Hao and Tang Xiao knew what she was. She later became his second disciple and received the World Tree template 10 12 14 15.

The Tang brothers sought the techniques used by Qian Renxue and eventually ambushed the group. Jiang Nian escaped with his disciples and left planted manuals behind, drawing the brothers into practicing techniques that did not deliver the movement speed they expected 14 16.

Back in Suotuo City, he accepted the Pang Family’s offer to supply ingredients and sell his pills exclusively. In exchange for improving their Martial Souls, he required the family to acknowledge Qian Renxue as its honored lord 17.

Jiang Nian subsequently defeated Dugu Bo and claimed the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well in return for curing his Martial Soul’s poisonous affliction. Dugu Bo became his follower, while the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect also accepted submission after witnessing his strength and the value of his Martial Soul-transforming pills 21 22 25 26 33.

Conflict with Spirit Hall

Spirit Hall’s imprisonment of Pang Dun and Dugu Bo brought Jiang Nian into direct conflict with Qian Xunji. When the Pope demanded his allegiance and possession of Ah Yin, Jiang Nian refused, restored his injured followers, and sent his disciples outside before attacking 28.

He defeated Qian Xunji, Yue Guan, and Gui Mei, broke their attempts to restrain him, and severed Golden Crocodile’s arm. Rather than kill Qian Renxue’s father, he exposed that Qian Xunji had raped Bibi Dong and that Qian Renxue was their daughter. He then allowed Qian Renxue to choose between Spirit Hall and life with him; she chose her teacher 29 30 31.

Bibi Dong attacked as the group prepared to leave. Jiang Nian subdued her and confronted her devotion to Yu Xiaogang using a recording of Yu’s own statements. For Qian Renxue’s sake, he ultimately took the unresponsive Bibi Dong with them and cared for her at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 31 32 33.

Later Forest Expedition and Heaven Dou City

During another Star Dou expedition, Jiang Nian introduced his disciples to Dou Qi and assigned more advanced techniques. Ah Yin’s absorption of a sixty-thousand-year Soul Ring transformed her Martial Soul into the Blue Silver Divine Tree, bringing her World Tree template to 90% 35 37.

When Tang Hao threatened Ah Yin, Jiang Nian destroyed his Clear Sky Hammer and Martial Soul Origin before killing him. He also secured a ten-thousand-year Lie Yan Wyvern Soul Ring for Qian Renxue, who reached level 25 and developed a second angel wing 39.

After meeting the Silver Dragon King, Jiang Nian clashed with Di Tian over the protection of his disciples. Their exchange ended with Di Tian acknowledging his offensive strength. Jiang Nian then returned to Heaven Dou City, arranged arena training for his disciples, and authorized the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect to relocate to Sunset Forest 40 41 42.

Appearance

• Youthful face and white hair: Qian Renxue describes him as exceptionally handsome when she first sees his physical body 5.
• White robes: Worn during his confrontation with Spirit Hall in Suotuo City 29.
• Distinctive Martial Soul display: Emperor Flame constantly changes color, accompanied by nine Soul Rings whose colors do not follow the continent’s conventional ring-age scheme 4 29.

Personality

Jiang Nian is affectionate toward his disciples but demanding about their training. He notices that Qian Renxue’s obedience comes partly from fear of abandonment, comforts her repeatedly, and encourages her to develop at her own pace. Nevertheless, he allows her to endure painful battles when he judges the experience necessary for independence 4 5 6 18.

His care coexists with deception and self-interest. He conceals his responsibility for Qian Renxue’s damaged awakening, privately recognizes the irony of her gratitude, and acknowledges that he is the real liar behind her situation. Recruiting disciples also serves his own goal of unlocking Heavenly Flames 2 4 15.

Pang Dun regards him as easygoing, carefree, and averse to trouble. Jiang Nian initially avoids Spirit Hall’s attention and shows no interest in struggles over royal power, but readily uses overwhelming force when negotiations fail or his disciples are threatened 5 17 21 28 33.

He does not treat humans and Soul Beasts as inherently different candidates for discipleship. He also distinguishes character from talent: his contempt for Yu Xiaogang concerns alleged dishonesty, plagiarism, and irresponsibility rather than weak cultivation. When discussing his disciples’ future partners, he says their character—not personal enmity—would determine his objections 8 15 33.

Yao Chen Inheritance and Disciple Templates

Jiang Nian’s activated template provides inherited knowledge, a powerful physical body, and a system for assigning growth templates to disciples 1.

• Disciple assessment: Displays Soul Power, template completion, cultivation compatibility, techniques, and the disciple’s attitude toward him 5 6 15.
• Mental transmission: Imparts cultivation methods and techniques directly into a disciple’s consciousness 2 6.
• Tailored instruction: Uses template information to select suitable Soul Rings and detect unstable advancement 5 13.
• Heavenly Flame progression: Requires nine absolutely loyal disciples with assigned templates. Each fully unlocked disciple template grants control over one of his locked Heavenly Flames 4.

Emperor Flame and Bone Spirit Cold Flame

Emperor Flame is the Martial Soul granted to Jiang Nian’s physical body. Its nine Soul Rings each represent one of the top ten Heavenly Flames, but their appearance does not mean all nine are usable 4.

• Initial restriction: Bone Spirit Cold Flame is the only Heavenly Flame he can initially control; the rings are otherwise largely a display until their unlock conditions are met 4.
• Flame enhancement: Using Emperor Flame’s form strengthens Bone Spirit Cold Flame and greatly raises its temperature 29.
• Alchemy: Extracts medicinal properties more effectively than ordinary boiling 6.

Dou Qi and Dou Techniques

Jiang Nian can use Dou Qi separately from the Soul Power recognized by ordinary Soul Masters. He demonstrates Dou Qi armor and later teaches both disciples to identify and circulate this energy 21 35.

• Suction Palm — Low Xuan Class: Pulls targets through precise energy control. Its advanced applications include drawing blood directly from a body; Jiang Nian demonstrates this by killing two Scarlet Fire Lizards 6.
• Eight Extremes Collapse — High Xuan Tier: Layers successive waves of force into a strike, reaching mastery at eight waves. Jiang Nian uses it against Dugu Bo, Qian Xunji, and Tang Hao 10 21 28 39.
• Flame Splitting Wave Ruler: A ruler-based technique he teaches Qian Renxue after assigning her weighted training with the Heavy Xuan Ruler 35 37.
• Great Heaven Creation Palm: Produces a massive palm attack. Its clash with Di Tian’s Eclipse Purple Moon: Black Dragon Sword is evenly matched 41.
• Flash Step: The name he announces during escapes with his disciples. Manuals planted for the Tang brothers fail to increase their speed, and Ah Yin later proposes spreading the technique’s false reputation through the Clear Sky Sect 16 36.

Spatial Movement and Perception

• Spatial travel: Tears open space and reaches Qian Renxue in fewer than two breaths after sensing danger 11.
• Unaided hovering: Stands in midair without a flying Martial Soul or visible Soul Ring activation 13 29.
• Wide-area sensing: His perception covers ten li in soul form and later reaches across half the Soul Hunting Forest 1 6.

• Poison treatment: Cures the harm caused by Dugu Bo’s own venom and provides medicine for the Dugu Family’s inherited affliction 21 22.

• Qian Renxue — First disciple. He secretly caused her impaired awakening, then became her principal source of protection and affection. He promises to remain her teacher even if she chooses to return to Spirit Hall 1 5 31.
• Ah Yin — Second disciple. Her initial fear develops into trust and romantic interest; Jiang Nian repeatedly invokes their master-disciple relationship when rebuking her flirtation 15 27 42.
• Pang Dun — Commercial partner and loyal supporter. Pang Dun protects the pill refiner’s identity under torture; Jiang Nian subsequently heals him 17 25 28.
• Dugu Bo — Follower recruited through treatment of his family’s Martial Soul affliction. Jiang Nian entrusts him with guarding the well, protecting his disciples, and arranging their arena registration 22 28 42.
• Ning Fengzhi, Chen Xin, and Gu Rong — Leaders of the subordinate Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. Their submission rests on Jiang Nian’s overwhelming strength and his ability to improve the sect’s hereditary Martial Soul 25 26 33.
• Bibi Dong — Initially hostile to him over Yu Xiaogang. Despite their confrontation, Jiang Nian tells Qian Renxue that Bibi Dong is not responsible for the suffering inflicted on her 32 33.
• Qian Xunji — Enemy who attempts to force his submission and seize Ah Yin. Jiang Nian repeatedly restrains his killing intent because of Qian Renxue 28 29.
• Yu Xiaogang — An object of intense contempt. Jiang Nian condemns his conduct and assigns Qian Renxue to beat him whenever they meet 8.
• Tang Hao and Tang Xiao — Adversaries seeking his techniques. Their ambush leads to Jiang Nian’s planted-manual deception; Tang Hao later dies at his hands 14 16 39.
• Di Tian — Powerful Soul Beast opponent. Their clash changes Di Tian’s attitude from contempt to recognition of Jiang Nian’s offensive ability 41.
