Power Progression
These are documented development milestones, not named cultivation realms.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial manifestation | 1 | Helian Yuan’s shadow rises from the ground, forms indistinct forepaws, and retains the shape of a crouching tiger as he flees. |
| Bloodline-linked manifestation | 2 | After Old Mo’s invading will shatters, Tiger Shadow mirrors Helian Yuan’s movements and detects a night mouse before he hears it. |
| Three-breath reinforcement | 3 | Testing establishes a brief window for enhancing his arm and spear. Maintaining it into the fourth breath causes prickling pain. |
| Expanded coverage and five-breath endurance | 10 | Covers his shoulders, back, and part of his chest during the Lightning-Patterned Leopard encounter; remains active into the fifth breath before dispersing. |
| Complete tiger outline | 11 | Forms a full crouching tiger behind him for five breaths. Tests confirm movement-dependent perception and its inability to detach and attack independently. |
| Conditional sixth breath; Shadow Follows the Spear | 24 | Eliminating unnecessary movements allows a sixth breath in good physical condition. Helian Yuan develops a repeatable last-moment change in spear direction. |
| Partial Shadow Attachment | 38 | Concentrates reinforcement along the right shoulder, elbow, and wrist for one forceful movement, at the cost of severe numbness and strain. |
| Controlled Shadow Cover | 41 42 | Refines attachment into a deliberate shoulder–elbow–wrist sequence. By the third day of training, he can reinforce his arm without raising the complete tiger form. |
Background / History
Tiger Shadow appeared after Helian Yuan encountered the remains of a giant black tiger. During Old Mo’s subsequent possession attempt, the Saint-level tiger blood and invading will drove Helian Yuan’s hidden bloodline into rejecting the intruder. Old Mo’s will shattered, and its fragments sank into his blood 1 2.
The resulting manifestation was not a surviving, complete Old Mo. It followed Helian Yuan’s movements without speaking or asserting a second will. Helian Yuan considered Saint-level tiger blood, remnant-soul fragments, and his clan’s nearly extinguished bloodline possible components of the phenomenon 2 11.
The Tiger Pattern Secret Canon described beast transformation but contained no account of Tiger Shadow. Helian Yuan therefore recorded his own tests in its blank spaces, measuring duration, physical strain, perception, and control. He eventually replaced the label “black tiger” with “Tiger Shadow” to avoid treating its appearance as proof that Old Mo remained intact 3 11.
Appearance
- Early form: An indistinct tiger silhouette rising behind Helian Yuan, initially showing only portions of its body 1 2.
- Complete form: A crouching black tiger standing half a body taller than him, with no visible eyes or fur details. Its outline rises and falls with his breathing and remains connected to the shadow at his feet 11.
- Reinforcement form: Spreads over his arm, shoulders, back, or weapon rather than maintaining a separate tiger outline. Concentrated attachment can produce a hazy tiger-claw shape along his right arm 10 24 38.
Abilities & Skills
Physical and Weapon Reinforcement
Tiger Shadow channels brief bursts of strength through Helian Yuan’s body and weapons 3.
- Can cover his arm and enter his spear, strengthening a decisive thrust rather than sustaining an entire fight 3.
- Can spread across his torso as a thin protective layer. It blocks the Lightning-Patterned Leopard’s claw tips but cannot withstand the full impact of the level-four beast 10.
- Its forepaws briefly brace a sinking boulder while Helian Yuan frees his trapped foot; it cannot support the collapsing mountain 18.
- Enhancement does not erase differences between power levels or substitute for traps, positioning, and accurate targeting 3 10 23.
Heightened Perception
Tiger Shadow gives Helian Yuan access to beastlike awareness of nearby movement 2 3.
- Detects a night mouse before his ordinary hearing does and makes a falling bone needle audible from five steps away during testing 2 3.
- Turns toward approaching creatures before Helian Yuan hears them, providing directional warning 11 13.
- Loses track of the Green-Eared Fox’s direction when it stops moving. Its perception depends on movement and presence; it cannot see through walls 11.
- Withdrawal can leave him with throbbing temples as ordinary forest sounds crowd back into his awareness 3.
Shadow Follows the Spear
Helian Yuan’s first repeatable spear application uses Tiger Shadow to change the direction of force immediately before impact 24.
- The shadow appears to sweep its tail across the shaft, but the underlying action comes from reinforcement of Helian Yuan’s shoulders and back 24.
- Can redirect a thrust that would otherwise glance off armor; testing finds it most useful against a swinging target 24.
- Requires a sufficiently rigid shaft and secure spearhead joint. Helian Yuan reinforces the joint with mountain badger fascia and thin iron wire 24.
- He rules out using it with obscured vision, a numb wrist, a loose spearhead, insufficient side clearance, or roots that could catch the spear’s butt 24.
- Cannot correct a fundamentally mistaken judgment of an incoming object’s path 24.
Partial Shadow Attachment / Shadow Cover
This application places the burden of reinforcement directly on the right arm rather than primarily transmitting it through the spear 38.
- Aligns the shoulder, elbow, and wrist so less force is lost between joints. Its effect is not a burst of battle Qi or simply a faster arm 38.
- Works with a weapon, a tool, or an unarmed movement, making it usable when a spear is pinned or space is restricted 38 49.
- Requires a complete force path: covering only the shoulder and elbow, or only the elbow and wrist, produces little useful force while still straining the body 38.
- Refined Shadow Cover follows three steps: set the shoulder, drive the elbow forward, and lock the wrist 42.
- Shares Tiger Shadow’s existing control period rather than granting extra time. Its practical movement window is the first two or three breaths, with later combat uses lasting only half a breath 42 45 49.
- Can be applied without raising the complete tiger, making the source of Helian Yuan’s unusual strength less obvious 42.
Tiger Presence and Responses
Tiger Shadow can provoke reactions in beasts and respond to tiger-related stimuli, though those reactions do not establish an independent intelligence 11 30 48.
- Its complete form frightens a level-two Green-Eared Fox into retreating 11.
- It stirs when cage imagery triggers Old Mo’s fragmentary memories 30.
- Responds to the wounded black cub with a sensation Helian Yuan describes as “the scent of its own kind” 48.
- When its presence overlaps with the cub’s growl, nearby Scent Beasts flatten themselves and the retrievers briefly hesitate 49.
- A similar overlap during the cub’s roar makes the black-armored leader perceive two attacking tigers and falter momentarily 50.
Limitations & Risks
| Limitation | Documented Effect |
|---|---|
| Cannot act independently | Attempts to send it toward a wooden stake twist its outline and cause tearing pain. It leaves no claw marks on the target 11. |
| Condition-dependent duration | Poor sleep, insufficient food, recent combat, and injury can reduce its duration or prevent summoning entirely 10 11 24. |
| Repeated-use strain | Three consecutive summons leave Helian Yuan barely able to hold a bowl and force him to stop training for a full day 24. |
| Direct burden on injuries | Shadow Cover causes bruising, numbness, and temporary loss of grip. It cannot replace a damaged or severed bodily connection 38 42. |
| Recovery restrictions | While injured, Helian Yuan limits Partial Shadow Attachment to three uses daily, one defined movement per use. Numb fingertips lasting more than ten breaths end that day’s testing 38. |
| Iron-whistle sensitivity | The retrieval team’s whistle provokes instinctive aversion. Removing its green metal sliver stops that response; whether it originates in Old Mo’s senses or the tiger-stripe bloodline remains unresolved 36 38. |
| Risk of identification | Observers can notice where Tiger Shadow manifests. The black-armored retrieval team later recognizes the tiger-shaped power and orders Helian Yuan captured alive 26 45. |
Notable Uses
| Event | Role of Tiger Shadow |
|---|---|
| Gray-Mane Boar hunt | Its three-breath burst helps Helian Yuan exploit a prepared ambush and kill a level-two beast 3. |
| Ironmane Bear hunt | Reinforces a spear thrust through an old neck scar after the level-three bear is drawn toward a pitfall 5. |
| Lightning-Patterned Leopard escape | Provides limited protection against claws and rocks, but leaves Helian Yuan injured and temporarily unable to summon it 10. |
| Blue Rock Panther rescue | Shadow Follows the Spear redirects the blade toward an iron nail, triggering a smoke screen to help the trapped hunter escape 25. |
| Split-Tooth Lizard battle | Helps pierce the level-three lizard’s soft scales before the crossbow hunter finishes it. An advance observer records the manifestation’s location 26. |
| Chain-net sabotage | Shadow Cover levers a loosened ground spike upward, tilting the retrieval team’s net and redirecting numbing powder toward its guards 42. |
| Throat-Locking Wind Wolf kill | A half-breath attachment enables a throat thrust in a narrow passage. Rocks and the wolf’s momentum sustain the spear afterward; Helian Yuan loses the weapon and temporarily cannot use Shadow Cover again 45. |
| Cub’s liberation | Reinforces one hammer blow against Ailina’s wedge pliers, cracking the green iron lock. Helian Yuan accepts temporary loss of strength in his right arm 49. |
