Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wurmple — early training | 1 3 38 | Arrived at Qinggu House roughly a year before the opening. Terrance preserved and strengthened her String Shot through training, protein supplements, and prepared Chilan Berries. Tackle, Bug Bite, and Poison Sting were her main pre-evolution moves. |
| Beautifly — evolved before the opening | 1 3 | Terrance cared for her through her evolutions. By the opening, she had developed precise wind control, air-current sensing, and powder-bearing Silver Wind. |
| Electroweb mastered — before departure | 1 3 | Months of training produced tougher, electrically conductive silk. Cheri Berries and her powder helped turn String Shot into Electroweb, their greatest achievement during their first year together. |
| Further growth under Master Katsumune | 36 37 | A month of expert care brought out previously unrealized potential. Her wind control improved further, and she learned Air Cutter. |
| Proficient Morning Sun | 37 38 | Demonstrated Morning Sun when greeting Swablu. After months of sunlight-sensing practice, she could restore stamina even on cloudy days to some extent. |
Background / History
Life at Qinggu House
Beautifly first reached Qinggu House as a timid Wurmple after fleeing a flock of hunting Taillow. The children initially caught and teased her, but Terrance intervened. After receiving their sincere apology, she befriended them and became part of the household 1.
Terrance handled most of her daily care and training, while Grandma Oran paid for her food and contributed experience from Pokémon Contests. Their training emphasized precise, attractive move use rather than raw strength, with Beautifly carrying the children’s shared Contest ambitions 3 37.
When Terrance prepared to leave, he initially refused to take her because everyone at Qinggu House had helped raise her. Grandma Oran explained that the children wanted Beautifly to see the world with him and supplied a signed Cherish Ball. Beautifly immediately accepted Terrance’s invitation to become his Pokémon 3.
Journey and Temporary Separation
Beautifly accompanied Terrance toward Slateport City, providing protection and companionship during the week-long trek. Aboard the S.S. Tidal, her condition and graceful movements drew Master Katsumune’s attention; he recognized her upbringing as an impressive achievement for someone of Terrance’s age and circumstances 5 7 8.
She stayed with Katsumune during Terrance’s month-long trial raising Swablu on Mt. Chimney. With excellent food, supplements, and surroundings, she became more energetic and substantially improved. After reuniting with Terrance in Slateport, she returned to Mt. Chimney and welcomed Swablu with a display of Morning Sun 36 37.
Appearance
- Body: Gray and black, with brightly colored, patterned wings 47.
- Eyes: Aqua-blue compound eyes 1.
- Movement: Graceful enough that Katsumune initially wondered whether Terrance was a coordinator after watching her land on his shoulder 7.
Personality
Beautifly is affectionate toward Terrance. She comforts him when he faces leaving Qinggu House, enjoys his praise, and flies directly into his arms after their month apart. Becoming his Pokémon was already her wish before he formally invited her 2 3 5 36.
Her gentleness is not universal: she appears docile around familiar people but faces Exploud with clear fighting spirit. She is also curious about unfamiliar experiences, exploring the S.S. Tidal on her first voyage and taking an interest in her prospective new teammate 7 36 47.
She dislikes cold environments. In Snowpoint City, both she and Swablu prefer remaining inside their Poké Balls; during the battle with Snover, Icy Wind initially causes her pain and slows her flight 49 50.
Abilities & Skills
String Shot and Electroweb
String Shot is the foundation of several of Beautifly’s techniques and the only early basic move Terrance deliberately retained 38.
- Reinforced silk: Diet and training make her strands exceptionally tough; a woven Electroweb is difficult to break through strength alone without something sharp 3 47.
- Electroweb: Electrifies a broad silk net to restrain and attack opponents 1 47.
- Binding and absorption: Silk can bind a target and serve as the medium for Absorb 38.
- Precision targeting: Fires a straight strand around Snover’s ankles and pulls it off balance 50.
- Limits: Exploud’s Boomburst pulverizes the entire Electroweb, demonstrating that its toughness does not make it unbreakable 47.
Wind Control and Aerial Maneuvering
Beautifly’s strongest specialty is sensing air currents and controlling her movement within them, rather than overpowering opponents directly 3 37 38.
- Gust and Tailwind: Manipulate air currents to improve flying speed and agility. Gust’s direct power is limited by her species, so Terrance primarily treats it as support 38.
- Silver Wind: Mixes Shield Dust into wind to give it a cutting quality; it can also carry Stun Spore 38.
- Air Cutter: Concentrates wind into blades rather than spreading it over a wide area. Terrance identifies it as her strongest current combat move 38.
- Multiple projectiles: Releases nine Air Cutters in succession against Exploud 47.
- Adapting to enemy attacks: Uses the currents within Snover’s Icy Wind to glide and evade the accompanying Ice Shards 50.
Powder Techniques
- Stun Spore: Can be mixed into Silver Wind, allowing Beautifly to stop four attacking Taillow with one combined technique 5.
- Sleep Powder: Releases green powder over several Whismur, putting them to sleep before they can resist 45 46.
- Electroweb development: Her powder was one component used in converting trained String Shot into Electroweb 3.
Absorb and Morning Sun
- Absorb: Draws stamina or nutrients through silk or Bug Bite. Before evolution, Bug Bite and Absorb helped her extract nutrition from Berries and plants 38.
- Morning Sun: Restores stamina through solar energy; her training lets her sense some sunlight even under cloud cover 38.
- Display use: Produces warm, white points of light to greet Swablu 37.
- Recovery limits: Her use of Morning Sun lacks the speed and effectiveness of a Grass-type Pokémon’s Synthesis because she has a lower natural affinity for solar energy 38.
Planned Development
Terrance’s next training priorities are explicitly long-term goals, not abilities Beautifly has already mastered 38.
- Improve air-current sensing until she can exploit changing conditions reliably.
- Combine Absorb with Morning Sun to gather solar energy more quickly and convert it into stamina.
- Develop Absorb toward Mega Drain and eventually Giga Drain.
- Approximate Synthesis’s recovery effect without actually learning Synthesis, which her species cannot learn.
Retired Moves and Other Limits
- Tackle, Bug Bite, and Poison Sting: Removed from her regular training and combat repertoire. Bug Bite’s attack form is restrictive, while her Poison Sting toxins are weak and the move is difficult to execute successfully 38.
- High-intensity combat: Her Contest-oriented upbringing leaves her less suited to demanding battles despite excellent move control 37.
- Egg Moves: Katsumune reports that no Egg Moves have yet been discovered for Beautifly; this is a limit of existing research, not proof that inheritance is impossible 10.
Equipment / Items
- Cherish Ball: A pure-white ball Grandma Oran won at a Pokémon Contest in her youth. The Qinggu House children signed it before giving it to Terrance for Beautifly, making it a token of their support 3.
- Training diet: Protein supplements and prepared Chilan Berries supported silk production, toughness, and nutrition. Cheri Berries also contributed to her Electroweb training 3.
Relationships
- Terrance — Primary caregiver, trainer, and first partner. Their bond developed through a year of shared care and demanding training before she officially joined his team 1 2 3.
- Grandma Oran — Supported her upkeep, contributed Contest experience, suggested developing Electroweb, and provided her Cherish Ball 3.
- Qinggu House children — Friends and fellow household members. They helped care for her and unanimously supported her departure with Terrance 1 3.
- Master Katsumune — Temporary caretaker during Terrance’s Mt. Chimney trial. His care helped release her accumulated potential; he praised her perceptiveness 36 37.
- Swablu — Teammate welcomed with Morning Sun. Swablu answered by scattering feathers through her lights, creating a shared display 37.
Notable Encounters
| Encounter | Actions and outcome |
|---|---|
| Four wild Taillow | Protects Terrance with Silver Wind carrying Stun Spore. They leave rather than remain for further attacks 5. |
| Whismur near Rusturf Tunnel | Uses Sleep Powder to incapacitate several Whismur while Terrance intervenes to get Tetsuya’s group out of danger 45 46. |
| Exploud | Attacks with Silver Wind and Air Cutter, then lands Electroweb. Exploud destroys the net with Boomburst and knocks her from the sky, decisively defeating her 47. |
| Candice’s Snover | Participates in Terrance’s first battle against another Trainer. Overcomes her initial difficulty with Icy Wind, evades Ice Shard, and follows Snover’s Razor Leaf response to Electroweb by binding its ankles with String Shot and pulling it down. The supplied account does not establish a final battle result 50. |
