Background / History
Family and Martial Training
Zhou Wenye came from an enormously wealthy family in Qingsha City and routinely traveled with bodyguards. The family’s fortune came from telecom fraud; his father, Zhou Hongtu, controlled the largest telecom-fraud compound on Wuda Island 10 48 54.
His family employed Ruan Wen as his bodyguard, martial arts instructor, and the person responsible for his villa’s security. Under her instruction, he practiced the Ruan Clan Fighting Art before enrolling at the Black Killing Boxing Gym 26 52.
Pursuit of Sulai
Zhou spent nearly half a year attending the gym to pursue Sulai, despite already possessing substantial martial training. He used his family background to intimidate other students, monopolized Sulai’s attention, and frequently struck too hard during sparring. His conduct and pursuit of the coach made him widely disliked among the trainees 10 29.
Formal Disciple Assessment
During the gym’s assessment, Zhou beat an opponent into shock after the man left a footprint on his white tracksuit. The trainee suffered a severe facial bruise and convulsions. Zhou showed no remorse, arguing that he had not struck a prohibited vital point and that his opponent had charged into the blow. He was allowed to continue because the attack had not technically broken the rules 24 25 26.
He faced Cheng Sheng in the third round. Cheng first distracted him by claiming Sulai was watching, then attacked with the Power of the Ram. Zhou blocked the blow and retaliated with a sustained assault that left Cheng relying on his exceptional reactions to survive. When Cheng pretended to concede, Zhou pressed forward rather than stopping; Cheng slipped inside his guard and landed a powerful knee strike to his lower abdomen 25 26.
After Zhou’s defeat, Sha Lie rebuked him for causing trouble at another school despite being a Ruan Clan disciple. His bodyguards carried him away, while his loss helped establish Cheng Sheng’s reputation among the gym’s students 26 28.
Retaliation
Ruan Wen treated Zhou’s abdominal injury with mud bee stingers to relieve pain and drain pooled blood. She predicted recovery within a month if he avoided strenuous activity, but he remained injured nearly a month later 29 52.
Zhou blamed Sulai and the entire Black Killing Boxing Gym for his humiliation. He asked Ruan Wen to destroy the school, then proposed having Sulai abducted. When Ruan Wen quoted twenty million Nan Currency to involve her master, Zhou rejected the expense and instead hired her to arrange Cheng Sheng’s murder 29 30.
Two Nurturing Sha fighters subsequently ambushed Cheng Sheng, but both were killed and sacrificed. Ruan Wen later confronted Cheng herself while investigating their disappearance; she also died 43 44 46 50 54.
Unaware of her fate, Zhou learned that his father was trying to recruit a Curse master from Dongyue. He expected this alliance to expand the family business and give him the means to destroy the Black Killing Style. He also decided that Ruan Wen should die, resenting her earlier price demand 52 53.
Death and Aftermath
Cheng Sheng located Zhou’s villa through information obtained with Dark Sacrifice and ambushed him in a bathroom. A knee strike aggravated Zhou’s existing injury and ruptured his already damaged bladder. Cheng then bound him and used blood from a chest wound to begin a sacrificial array 53 54.
When household staff began searching nearby, Cheng erased the unfinished array. Although he briefly appeared to spare Zhou, he instead stabbed him through the heart and escaped through an air-conditioning vent 53.
Zhou Hongtu returned from Panma Province the following day. Within three days of the killing, reports circulated that he had offered a black-market reward of thirty million Nantu Currency for his son’s killer 54.
Appearance
Zhou Wenye was a handsome young man with a well-proportioned build 10.
- Grooming: Wore styled hair and habitually adjusted the locks over his forehead 23 53.
- Clothing: Attended the assessment in a snow-white tracksuit, changing into a blue one before fighting Cheng Sheng 23 25.
- Injuries: His defeat left extensive purple bruising on his lower abdomen; treatment produced numerous small punctures that seeped dark blood 29.
Personality
Zhou was domineering, vain, and accustomed to having others obey him. He relied on his wealth and family influence to threaten ordinary students and assumed his family would resolve any consequences of his violence. Minor affronts could provoke disproportionate retaliation, as shown when he severely injured a trainee for marking his clothes 10 26.
His pursuit of Sulai reflected possessiveness rather than concern for her wishes. After she remained beyond his reach and he lost the assessment, he blamed her for his suffering and sought to have her abducted. His abuse extended to other women: after a partner criticized his sexual performance, he struck her and ordered her sent to the family compound for exploitation, something he had done before 29 30 52.
Abilities & Skills
Ruan Clan Fighting Art — “Killer Bee”
Zhou practiced the Ruan Clan’s fighting art, recognizable to the Black Killing Style’s senior fighters 25 26.
- Used rapid, continuous punches that produced a low humming sound and left Cheng Sheng little opportunity to counterattack 26.
- Employed a swift, vicious elbow strike likened to a killer bee diving with its stinger 26.
- Inflicted severe bruising and convulsions on an assessment opponent 24.
- The style’s mastered secret art causes muscles and nerves in a struck area to rapidly rot and die; Sulai described this as the basis of its “Killer Bee” name 31.
Physical Conditioning and Combat Fundamentals
Years of training placed Zhou well above amateur fighting enthusiasts 25 26.
- Blocked Cheng Sheng’s opening Power of the Ram punch and immediately resumed fighting, although his arm continued to ache 25 26.
- Attacked fast enough that Cheng required Sparrow Spirit-level reactions to evade him 25 26.
- Remained vulnerable to deception and overcommitment. Mo Jiang later identified flaws in both his temperament and technique 26 38.
Relationships
- Zhou Hongtu — Father. His influence underpinned Zhou’s confidence in escaping consequences; after Zhou’s death, he offered a substantial reward for the killer 26 54.
- Ruan Wen — Bodyguard, martial instructor, and security chief. Treated his injuries and arranged attacks on Cheng Sheng; Zhou later planned to have her killed 29 30 52.
- Sulai — Target of his unwanted pursuit. His resentment escalated into plans for abduction and coercion 10 29 30 53.
- Cheng Sheng — Assessment opponent turned mortal enemy. Defeated Zhou, survived the retaliation he commissioned, and ultimately killed him 26 44 53.
- Sha Lie — Publicly condemned Zhou’s behavior and motives after the assessment, adding to his humiliation 26.
- Badan — Fellow gym trainee whom Zhou intimidated into yielding Sulai’s attention 10.
