Cultivation Mechanics
Conventional Breakthrough
- Conventional cultivation requires a qualitative transformation of Qi and Blood before entering Gang Force 11.
- Compatibility between a practitioner’s physique and cultivation method can determine whether the breakthrough succeeds. Xingshan advances after correcting his forms; Decai had been held back by practicing the forceful Vajra Prajna Palm despite an unsuitable build 3 7.
- Gang Force Qi and Blood is inherently more robust than Dan Jin Qi and Blood, making further qualitative transformation much harder after advancement 10 12.
Heavenly Gang Thirty-Six Fists
- Mo Wenjian’s method bypasses the qualitative-transformation requirement, greatly reducing the difficulty of advancing from Dan Jin Perfection 8 11.
- The shortcut sacrifices Qi and Blood potency, not access to Body-Protecting Gang Qi 8.
- In their first comparison, Xingshan’s Qi and Blood is about thirty percent stronger than Decai’s. Decai notes that his original Vajra Prajna Palm was already twenty percent inferior to Xingshan’s Muscle-Tendon Changing Classic 8.
- Mo Wenjian’s simulated attempt to restore the transformation requirement produces the Heavenly Gang Muscle-Changing Thirty-Six Fists. Shaolin’s monks criticize it for removing the original method’s chief advantage: an easier breakthrough 10.
Qualitative Transformations of Qi and Blood
Repeated transformations create enormous differences between practitioners within the same realm.
| Transformations | Stated Increase in Qi and Blood Power | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| One | 10% 13 | Approximately the improvement provided by the Muscle-Tendon Changing Classic’s transformation 10. |
| Two | 20% 13 | — |
| Three | 40% 13 | Achieved through Mo Wenjian’s Three-Transmutation Golden Elixir research 10. |
| Four | 80% 13 | — |
| Five | 160% 13 | — |
| Six | 320% 13 | Six-Revolution Golden Pills enable practitioners to enter the Dao through martial arts 11 12. |
| Seven | 640% 13 | The Seven-Transmutation Golden Elixir involves unifying essence, Qi, and spirit 12. |
| Eight | 1,280% 13 | — |
| Nine | 2,560% 13 | Produces the state of “Qi and Blood like mercury” attained by Mo Wenjian 13. |
- The perfected Sixth-Transformation Pill Refining Technique works on existing Gang Force practitioners as well as those still at Dan Jin 11.
- Before Mo Wenjian’s own Gang Force breakthrough, transforming Gang Force Qi and Blood takes forty-nine shichen, compared with one shichen for Dan Jin Qi and Blood 12 13.
- His simulated Nine-Revolution Golden Pill requires a radiation environment lethal to humans. He therefore chooses the resulting strength Dao Fruit rather than the alchemy technique 13.
Entering the Dao Through Martial Arts
- Six transformations and entry into the Dao create a distinct upper tier within Gang Force; simulated practitioners adopt the title Gang Jin National Martial Arts Myth to distinguish themselves from ordinary grandmasters 12 14.
- The head of Bodhi Hall attributes his overwhelming improvement to both transformed Qi and Blood and a tenfold amplification from moonlight 12.
- This distinction is not merely ceremonial: the newly advanced head of Bodhi Hall defeats the senior Master Suhui in one move 11 12.
Abilities & Limits
Body-Protecting Gang Qi
- Qi and Blood forms an external defensive layer described as impervious even to cannon bombardment 3.
- Ordinary attacks cannot penetrate it. During Xingshan and Decai’s spar, even supreme moves that breach the protection lack enough remaining force to inflict fatal injuries 8.
- Comparable Gang Force experts can potentially pierce it, while higher-tier practitioners can kill ordinary grandmasters outright 3 24.
- Its durability helps explain prolonged battles without deaths, although Mo Wenjian initially presents this as his interpretation of the simulated Taiping conflict 8.
Externalized Martial Techniques
- Gang Force practitioners project Qi and Blood through their martial arts. Decai produces a thirty-foot illusory palm, while Xingshan manifests a sixty-foot wrathful vajra through the Vajra Indestructible Divine Art 8.
- Technical knowledge remains important: Decai’s varied arts allow him to challenge Xingshan despite weaker Qi and Blood, and their extended spar lasts from morning until night 8.
- Xingshan can also exert enough mental pressure to force the Dark Force-level Beile to his knees 5.
Advanced Refinement and Energy Storage
Mo Wenjian develops capabilities far beyond those of ordinary Gang Force grandmasters.
- Five-element organ tempering: Remedies the disparity between iron-hard skin, sinews, and bones and comparatively fragile internal organs 14 17.
- Inner pill: Stores ten times the Qi and Blood contained in his entire body 17.
- True Solar Fire: Acquired through the Three-Legged Golden Crow shikigami; demonstrated by melting a bronze Buddha statue 17.
- Storage relic: Its capacity expands through spiritual power and theoretically has no upper limit 17.
- Large-scale Qi and Blood release: The relic’s reserves allow him to envelop the Thousand Buddha Hall complex and extinguish its fire after his initial attempt proves insufficient 20.
Barrier to Further Advancement
- Greater strength does not automatically produce a higher realm. Mo Wenjian explicitly remains at Gang Force even after surpassing Bodhidharma in raw power 15.
- In one simulation, he reaches the limits of body and Qi refinement but dies at age 499 without advancing, recognizing his neglect of spirit refinement 17.
- He subsequently identifies spirit refinement as the key to Shatter the Void and See the Indestructible Spirit 17 21.
History & World Significance
Established Power Structure
Gang Force grandmasters initially stand at the pinnacle of the National Martial Arts world. The Great Qing Dynasty relies on its eight Gang Force banner lords, while Shaolin treats its grandmasters as strategic safeguards 3 5 11.
Shaolin requires an abbot who reaches Gang Force to relinquish the office. Its back-mountain pagodas are reserved for the relics of monks who attained the realm 5 7.
Spread of the Breakthrough Method
The Heavenly Gang Thirty-Six Fists changes Gang Force from an exceptionally restrictive achievement into a reproducible breakthrough for many stalled Dan Jin experts. In one simulation, seven Shaolin monks advance, followed by thirty-nine Qing loyalists after the court steals the method 9.
Its wider circulation changes the balance between court and jianghu. One simulated future sees seventy-two grandmasters pressure the emperor into negotiations; later simulations increase that gathering to three hundred 9 14.
Emergence of a Higher Tier
The proliferation of grandmasters also enables violent crime, including massacres. In one simulated response, Mo Wenjian helps establish the Attendant Pavilion, whose pill-enhanced experts hunt criminal grandmasters without participating in political struggles 14.
Other simulated futures place this superior power in competing political camps. Ye Fan kills numerous ordinary grandmasters after entering the Dao, while the similarly enhanced Master Xingdian dismantles his alliance’s influence and becomes his principal rival 24 25.
Notable Practitioners
- Master Xingshan — Advances through personalized corrections to the Muscle-Tendon Changing Classic; becomes Mo Wenjian’s Dao protector 3.
- Master Decai — Demonstrates the Heavenly Gang Thirty-Six Fists shortcut and becomes Shaolin’s fifth Gang Force grandmaster 7 11.
- Master Deyuan and Master Dezhi — Already Gang Force grandmasters when Decai describes the surviving members of Shaolin’s four divine monks 7.
- Head of Bodhi Hall — Demonstrates six transformations and entry into the Dao through martial arts 11 12.
- Master Suhui — Senior Shaolin grandmaster who subsequently receives a Six-Revolution Golden Pill and enters the Dao 12 13.
- Mo Wenjian — Attains nine transformations, then reaches the realm’s limit through accumulated body- and Qi-refinement advances 13 17.
- Ye Fan — In a simulated future, advances from Dan Jin using a Six-Revolution Golden Pill and becomes a dominant force against ordinary Gang Force grandmasters 24.
- Master Xingdian — Pill-enhanced rival to Ye Fan in simulated events; serves the Qing court and defeats or coerces other grandmasters 25.
