Background

Sasuke was an ambitious academy student who declared that he would someday surpass Ayato. Although proud, he did not resent those stronger than himself; Ayato regarded him as hardworking, decent, and driven by self-respect rather than arrogance. 26

The Uchiha Clan Massacre left Sasuke as its sole public survivor. He withdrew from the academy while recovering from the psychological trauma, and the destruction of his clan became the central motive behind his pursuit of strength and revenge. 50

His resolve did not disappear as he learned more of the clan's history. He came to understand the Uchiha's political isolation after the Nine-Tails' Riot and their planned rebellion, but continued to reject Itachi's decision to massacre the clan rather than seek the survival of noncombatants. 214 216

Personality

Sasuke is intensely competitive and self-demanding. He measures himself against Naruto's abnormal stamina, Sakura's academic ability, Ayato's talent, and Itachi's power, using those comparisons as motivation rather than an excuse to give up. 112 123

Revenge remains a defining part of his identity for much of the story, but he refuses to accept the idea that strength must come from hatred or murdering loved ones. After awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan, he explicitly chooses a path different from Itachi's. 189 265 268

His concern for others becomes increasingly overt.
