Background / History

Family and Childhood

Sherlock grew up with Mycroft and Eurus in the Holmes family. His mother was an accomplished mathematician who published educational books; his father is mild-tempered, humorous, and emotionally perceptive. Eurus is one year younger than Sherlock. According to Mycroft, professional assessments classified Sherlock as clever, Mycroft as exceptionally clever, and Eurus as a once-in-a-century genius 38 49.

As a child, Sherlock secretly cared for an injured robin, making a splint from twigs and a handkerchief and bringing it food and water. Its death distressed him deeply. He later recast that grief as frustration over a failed experiment and resolved not to repeat what he called a waste of resources 32.

His memories of “Redbeard,” supposedly a childhood hound, concealed his connection to Victor Trevor. At eight years old, Sherlock witnessed Victor being swept away by a wave while a military-uniformed man watched from shore. Ashton later exposes a contradiction in the dog memory: Sherlock’s father was allergic to dog hair, and the family had never owned a dog 41 44.

Sherlock eventually recognizes that Redbeard was Victor, not an animal, and that a psychological defense mechanism had rewritten his memories. He also discovers that he has forgotten Eurus entirely, prompting him to demand the truth from Mycroft 49.

Life at Baker Street

Sherlock shares his Baker Street home with Watson before Mrs. Hudson’s niece, Sitangna, arrives. His room contains anatomical specimens and objects he refuses to let others move. Watson frequently ends up handling chores and errands for him 1 5.

Although Sitangna’s identity and reasons for moving in appear legitimate, Sherlock immediately finds her manner suspiciously “systematic.” He realizes that she has approached him with a purpose and keeps her close to investigate that purpose, bringing her into both his cases and daily activities 3 33.

Appearance

Sherlock is tall, pale, curly-haired, and lean, with defined muscles and notably upright posture 1 2 12.

  • Eyes: Blue-green, appearing bluer or greener as the light changes 3 5.
  • Face: Striking, angular bone structure and a long, thin face 10 20 41.
  • Hands: Long, slender fingers with neatly maintained nails 2.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears suits, a long black coat, and a scarf outdoors; at home, he wears dressing gowns, including blue and dark red silk ones 3 25 33 34.
  • Childhood appearance: Curly-haired with round cheeks, markedly different from his adult appearance 41.

Personality

Sherlock is intellectually proud, impatient with ordinary social conventions, and intensely motivated by unsolved mysteries. He orders his companions around, dismisses activities he considers pointless, and insults people whose reasoning fails to meet his standards. His conduct at crime scenes can be equally abrasive: he draws on a shared computer screen and dismisses objections when he believes he has found the answer 5 6 10 15.

His patience increases substantially when gathering useful information. He carefully questions Emily about a barely noticeable smell and explains to Watson that solving the bomber’s case early would leave time to investigate the bomber himself. He can also concede a social mistake, apologizing to Sitangna and Watson for casually judging other people’s hobbies 4 6 12.

Sherlock describes himself as a “high-functioning sociopath” and initially regards emotion as a threat to reason and control. Watson and Sitangna risking their lives for him disrupt that position. Rather than immediately accepting his feelings, he investigates them through blood tests, physiological records, and private written analysis 12 31 32.

His affection often appears through practical attention: carrying Sitangna to bed, giving her his scarf, preparing snow clothes for her, and blending a perfume specifically for her. Candy later explains that he noticed Sitangna’s attraction-enhancing aura but chose to approach her and ultimately fell in love with her real personality 17 21 29 38 46.

Abilities & Skills

Observation and Deduction

Sherlock builds conclusions from physical details, inconsistencies, and behavior that others overlook.

  • Infers Sitangna’s strained family relationships from her name and presentation during their first meeting 2.
  • Identifies Raoul de Santos as Connie Prince’s killer and explains the lethal botulinum injection disguised as Botox 4.
  • Helps determine that West’s body was transported by train rather than killed where it was found 10.
  • Recognizes evidence that Charlie Andrew’s apparent suicide was staged, including the treatment of the scene and the body’s position 34 35.
  • Detects that Emily is at the docks by listening to the background sounds during her telephone call 35.

Memory and Puzzle-Solving

Sherlock uses a Mind Palace to organize and retrieve information, but his memory is not immune to psychological distortion 32 44 49.

  • Solves Victor’s three topology puzzles and recognizes that their numerical answers also represent coordinates in London 15.
  • Rapidly memorizes the music Sitangna gives him for their Christmas performance 26.
  • Remembers the violin score for Bach’s “Air on the G String” during Emily’s rescue 17.
  • Initially insists that memory distortion cannot explain Redbeard’s absence from family photographs, only to discover that his own memories have been rewritten 41 49.

Investigation and Infiltration

Sherlock is comfortable using deception, unauthorized entry, and digital research to advance a case.

  • Poses as a reporter, using a camera while Sitangna handles a recorder 3.
  • Quickly picks the lock to Joe Harrison’s flat 10.
  • Uses an internet search to retrieve information about Victor’s employment 13.

  • Requests blood tests and substance screening during the Andrew and Victor investigation 35.
  • Blends Sitangna a custom perfume with pear, white peony, tea, and cedarwood notes 29.
  • Conducts repeated blood tests on himself while trying to classify his emotional response to Sitangna 32.

Violin and Composition

Sherlock plays the violin and composes his own music 19.

  • Performs “A Night of Confession” and “I Love You” with Sitangna at the Christmas gathering, moving several guests to tears 26.
  • Plays a Christmas carol while guests arrive at Baker Street 24.
  • Explicitly states that he cannot play the pipe organ; Sitangna performs the piece needed to disable Emily’s bomb 17.

Combat and Weapons

Sherlock can fight and act quickly under immediate threat, but acknowledges that his skills fall short of a professional killer’s 7.

  • Drives off the Stone Giant using Watson’s gun after being physically overpowered 7.
  • Draws a pistol on Moriarty at the swimming pool, though the snipers targeting Watson prevent him from controlling the encounter 11.
  • Helps Watson subdue Moriarty after Mycroft’s forces neutralize the snipers 11.
  • Stops Ashton’s syringe attack and holds a scalpel to his throat during the museum confrontation 43.

Exceptional Perceptiveness

Sherlock’s intelligence creates a particular risk for Tangna’s mission: the system estimates that he could notice something wrong with the world within three months 11.

  • Senses that Sitangna seems to have appeared without a prior place in the world, despite her convincing background 3.
  • Notices the unnatural quality of her demeanor and correctly identifies himself as her objective 33.
  • Recognizes the effect of her aura before choosing to accept the attraction rather than withdraw from her 46.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • BlackBerry: Used during his daily activities and investigations 3.

Relationships

  • Sitangna / Tangna — Flatmate, investigative partner, and romantic interest. His initial suspicion becomes attachment; he kisses her at Christmas and later asks her to help him study his feelings. They have not made their relationship official when Watson asks, though Candy subsequently confirms that Sherlock has fallen in love with her 27 32 33 46.
  • John Watson — Flatmate and investigative partner. Their friendship includes frequent arguments over Sherlock’s demands and insults, but Watson risks his life for him at the pool. Sherlock later urgently works to locate him after his abduction 1 6 11 48 49.
  • Mycroft Holmes — Older brother, government contact, and frequent source of friction. Mycroft monitors Sherlock and arranges protection around him; Sherlock resents his interference and accuses him of manipulating the Cavendish case. They nevertheless exchange a quiet Christmas greeting 7 13 29 35.

  • Irene Adler — An opponent who exploits his concern for Sitangna and tricks him into triggering her phone’s data wipe. He preserves the phone as a reminder of the defeat 20.
  • Emily Cavendish — Client whose kidnapping draws Sherlock into a wider political conspiracy. She later attends Baker Street’s Christmas gathering 12 17 26.
  • Victor Trevor — The name links two parts of Sherlock’s life: the university acquaintance he confronts over Emily’s kidnapping and the childhood friend hidden behind Redbeard. Sherlock later deduces that the missing child was replaced with Ashton’s son 13 15 43 49.
