The metal eye-shaped piece sat on the table for three days.

The feeling of being watched has changed. Before, it felt like a dull knife pressed against the back of your neck; now it feels like being scrutinized through a thin veil. You know there are eyes there, but you can't quite pinpoint their focus.

Lu Qinghe peeked through the crack in the door for the fifth time. "Nobody's here."

"We wouldn't have let you see it anyway," Lu Yuan said, wiping the blade of his hoe. "They're waiting."

"What are you waiting for?"

"Wait for our next step." Shen Moxin came out holding her notebook, adjusting her glasses. "The other side has demonstrated their presence and capabilities. Now it's our turn to state our position."

Mo Chen squatted in the corner, fiddling with parts, not even looking up. "What's the point of saying anything? Let's find them and fight."

"We can't beat them." Lu Yuan put down his hoe. "Anyone who can play like this is at least Soul King or higher, and a master of stealth. A head-on confrontation is suicide."

He stood up.

"Go about your business as usual. Su Yan, Li Wangye, go to the market to buy groceries. As usual."

The two boys nodded. As Su Yan carried the basket on his back, he tapped the rim three times with his fingers—the coded signal Lu Yuan had taught him, "Be alert for anything unusual."

At the west end of the market, the stone-paved road was full of potholes. Su Yan bought salt, coarse cloth, and herbs, and went to the blacksmith's shop to get iron nails. Nothing special.

He paused for a moment when he reached the old locust tree.

From the hollow of the tree root, half of something grayish was sticking out. It wasn't a stone, but a rolled-up piece of parchment with charred edges.

Li Wangye saw it too. Su Yan squatted down to tie her shoelaces, her fingers flying as she pulled out the paper and stuffed it into her pocket. The movement was as natural as picking up a fallen leaf.

Back at the old house, the oil lamp was lit.

The parchment lay on the table. It was tattered, only about the size of a palm, the writing dark brown and illegible. But a few lines could still be made out:

"... Soul Power does not exist solely in the Martial Soul; it is a reflection of the subtle ripples of heaven and earth... the Resonance Theory... ancient cultivators used 'strings' as a metaphor; when they vibrate, the soul moves..."

Shen Moxin's eyes lit up.

"This is a fragment of the ancient ' Resonance Theory '! The original text has long been lost! This 'string metaphor,' and the Soul Power fluctuation model you constructed..." She suddenly looked up.

Lu Yuan didn't speak. He stared at the scorch marks on the edge of the paper, then picked up the metal sheet to compare. The engraving technique was different, but it appeared too coincidentally.

"It was placed there specifically." Mo Chen leaned closer to sniff it. "No more than two hours ago."

"The hollow under the locust tree is the only way we can go," Su Yan whispered. "They know we'll go that way."

Li Wangye swallowed hard. "So you know that Teacher Shen... likes to study this."

The main room was silent for a few seconds.

Lu Yuan folded the paper neatly. "Put it away. Teacher Shen is just copying the analysis; don't rush to conclusions."

He paused.

"First 'delivery'."

They came twice more over the next four days.

The second one was an old book about the ecology and habits of the rare Soul Beast "Mist Shadow Marten". The pages were yellowed and the cover was missing. It appeared under the threshold of the herbal medicine shop, but the shop owner Old Sun, didn't notice it.

Coincidentally, Lu Yuan had just mentioned in his notes the day before yesterday that the stealth characteristics of the Mist Shadow Marten might improve detection devices.

The third one was even more amazing.

The half-broken core component of the Soul Tool, seemingly salvaged from a large array base, was wrapped in oil paper and placed in a crack in the woodpile behind the old house.

Mo Chen gasped when he saw the inscription.

"These patterns... are a variant of the ancient ' Flow Gathering ' formation! I've seen similar fragments before!" He stroked the metal surface, his eyes burning with fervor. "You can't find them on the market! Where did they dig them up from?"

Three things were placed side by side on the table.

Parchment, old books, and broken parts.

There were no threats, no messages. It was simply about precisely delivering the knowledge-related items that the team needed or was most interested in right under their noses.

Shen Moxin turned pale. "They're demonstrating their intelligence capabilities. They know everything about our personnel movements, research interests, private discussions..."

"They're also showcasing resources." Mo Chen licked his dry lips. "These things can't be obtained just by having intelligence. You need connections and channels."

Lu Qinghe sat on the doorstep, smoking, his brow furrowed. "What exactly do you want? To put on a show?"

"It's not a monkey show," Lu Yuan said slowly, "It's a test."

His gaze swept over three things.

"Testing our reaction. Ecstatic? Vigilant and fearful? Or like now, analyzing their intentions." He picked up the fragments and held them up to the light. "Also flexing our muscles. It means: We can control everything you have, and we can give you what you dream of. Cooperation or confrontation, the choice is yours."

Mo Chen cursed. "Then what do we do? Play dumb?"

"No." Lu Yuan put down the component. "We responded."

He looked at Mo Chen. "Make a small wooden box, about the size of a palm. It should have a simple trigger mechanism that records a Soul Power fluctuation when opened. Can you make that?"

Mo Chen grinned. "No problem. Half a day."

"Teacher Shen, give me a piece of paper."

Lu Yuan tore off a blank page, pondered for a moment, and began to draw.

It's not a complex core model. He drew a simplified diagram of the most basic "Soul Power resonance model"—the kind used to teach beginners. It only shows the principle of superposition and attenuation of Soul Power waves in a specific structure, without involving specific parameters.

After finishing the drawing, he signed a tiny "Yuan" character in the lower right corner.

"Put this drawing in the wooden box." Lu Yuan folded the paper neatly. "Tomorrow morning, Su Yan, put it in the hollow of the old locust tree. Leave after you've done that, and don't look back."

Su Yan nodded emphatically.

Mo Chen stayed up half the night, and the wooden box was finished by dawn. It was made of walnut wood, and its surface was rough like a child's toy. But when Lu Yuan took it, he could feel the subtle Soul Power patterns on the inside of the lid.

"The trigger mechanism is in the clasp of the box," Mo Chen explained. "If it's open for more than three breaths, the patterns will record the Soul Power characteristics of the person who came into contact with it—as long as they circulated their Soul Power. Once the record is complete, it will be automatically erased without leaving a trace."

Lu Yuan nodded. "That's enough."

The morning mist had not yet dissipated. Su Yan placed the wooden box into the recessed area, partially covered it with a few fallen leaves, and turned to leave.

The atmosphere in the old house was tense all day.

Lu Yuan continued to instruct Li Wangye on Soul Power micro-management, Shen Moxin organized materials, and Mo Chen polished parts. But everyone's ears were perked up.

In the evening, Su Yan and Li Wangye went out again.

As I walked to the old locust tree, I stopped in my tracks.

The wooden box in the dent is gone.

Instead, a metal plate was used.

It was exactly the same as the one on the door frame, with a simple eye pattern. But when Su Yan picked it up and turned it over, she saw a new engraving—a shallow line, as if it had been randomly drawn with a fingernail, slanted from below the eye pattern to the edge.

He gripped the metal piece tightly, then turned and ran.

"Does the scratch mean... approval? Or is it a signal to continue?" Shen Moxin frowned, examining the metal plate repeatedly under the light.

Mo Chen took it and touched it. "It was still drawn with Soul Power condensed into threads. The technique is the same, but the force is lighter, like a casual stroke."

Lu Yuan didn't touch the metal piece. He stared at the table—the diagram was gone, the wooden box was gone, and all the other party had returned was a scratched metal piece.

He slowly exhaled.

"What they're interested in isn't the Soul Marrow, or even entirely strength," Lu Yuan said in a low voice. "It's 'knowledge,' 'different ways of thinking,' and the 'disruption' our system might cause to the existing system."

He remembered that cold, eye-shaped pattern.

"Are they more like recorders, or judges? They're observing the growth of 'variables,' assessing their value or... danger."

No one responded in the main room.

As darkness fell outside the window, the sound of a night watchman's clapper could be heard in the distance. Just then, the courtyard gate was suddenly pushed open.

Li Wangye rushed in, his face deathly pale, his chest heaving violently. His shoes were covered in mud.

"Sir!" he gasped, "The whole town... is buzzing with rumors that the Cloud Mist Sect has made a move!"

Lu Yuan suddenly turned around.

What's that noise?

Li Wangye swallowed hard, his eyes filled with fear. "They seem to have... pried something out of the prisoners. A description of the ' Lightning ' in the mountains, and... an 'accomplice'! Now the Cloud Mist Sect people are going from inn to inquire about unfamiliar faces, saying they want to find that 'accomplice'!"

Lu Yuan's pupils contracted sharply.

Lin Xiao's situation suddenly worsened!
