Foundations and Blueprint
Shen Moxin's fingertips paused briefly as she turned, a pause so short it was almost invisible. Her voice returned to clarity. "Those who can walk, come with me to reinforce the entrance."
Shi Jian was the first to stand up; his face was injured, but his eyes shone with a frightening intensity. Several other men followed suit.
Lu Yuan didn't move, sitting against the stone wall. His Soul Power was depleted, and the wound on his side throbbed with pain. He needed to recover, and even more so, he needed to clear his mind.
Lin Xiao came over, sat down, and took a couple of sips of water.
"That thing," he nudged the leather pouch at Lu Yuan's waist with his elbow, "Is it really that important?"
Lu Yuan didn't open his eyes. "Some of the statements in the notes match what I guessed before."
What statement?
"Soul Power is not just energy, but also a kind of 'manifestation.' Martial Soul is a 'mark,' and Soul Ring is a 'contract,'" Lu Yuan said in a low voice. "But all manifestations and contracts are built on an invisible 'chain.' The author of the manuscript called it the ' Rule Shackles.'"
Lin Xiao remained silent for a moment.
"I don't understand," he said bluntly, "But do you think it's useful?"
"Perhaps." Lu Yuan opened his eyes and looked at Shen Moxin directing the movement of stones in the distance, "Or perhaps it's just the ramblings of an ancient madman."
Lin Xiao scoffed. "You're keeping your nonsense so secret?"
Lu Yuan did not answer.
The camp bustled with activity. Fear was tempered by concrete tasks: people moved stones, cleared rubble, and reinforced the temporary door with old metal pieces unearthed by Mo Chen. Shen Moxin led her men to bury simple tripwires on both sides of the passageway entrance—empty cans filled with gravel tied with thin vines, which would rattle when touched.
Simple, but effective.
As Lu Yuan watched, the vague blueprint in his mind gradually became concrete.
Three days later, the camp had changed.
The outer metal gate was completely sealed off, leaving only a narrow gap for one person to pass through sideways, which was secured with heavy stone slabs and wooden bars. A shallow trench was dug ten steps in front of the gate and filled with sharp gravel. On the stone walls on both sides, Mo Chen made several crude sensor lights using scrap metal pipes and residual Soul Power crystals—they were dim normally, but would emit a faint light when a strong Soul Power fluctuation approached.
It's not exactly impregnable, but it does provide early warnings and preventative measures.
The interior of the hall was divided into sections. The driest and best-ventilated area near the entrance to the passageway was partitioned into "chambers" with low walls built of rubble, and lined with dried moss and old cloth, serving as the living area. A little further away, a leveled area was cleared, and a hearth was enclosed with stones. Further into the corner of the rock wall, concealed by vines and old curtains, it was designated as a "medical point."
Lu Yuan has been busy these past few days.
His Soul Power had recovered to less than 50%, but his mind didn't stop. Leading Mo Chen and a few others with steady hands and feet, he explored the entire outer area that had already been explored, drawing detailed maps on animal hides with charcoal pencils.
Mark the areas where the Metal-Devouring Ant are most active with a red cross. Draw a blue circle around the areas where water seeps from the rock walls and can be collected. Mark the area with a green triangle around the moss that grows in the depression in the northeast corner of the hall— Shen Moxin confirmed that it is non-toxic and contains a weak amount of Soul Power, and can be eaten in small quantities.
Several rock walls echoed with hollow sounds when struck. Mo Chen drilled a small hole and discovered a vein of low-purity metal ore behind it, which might be usable in the future.
The map is gradually being filled in.
On the evening of the seventh day, Lu Yuan called everyone to the fire pit.
There were twenty-three people in total. The original team consisted of six, plus the sixteen men from the valley brought by Shi Jian, and a quiet middle-aged woman who had been helping out these past few days. Her Martial Soul was "Weaving Shuttle," which gave her no combat power, but she was extremely skillful and had mended several tattered clothes with old fabric.
The firelight illuminated every face. They were tired and thin, but most of them had a light in their eyes—the stubbornness of clinging to a piece of driftwood in dire straits, refusing to let go.
Lu Yuan didn't waste any words.
"The situation is temporarily stable," he said, his voice low but clear, "But this is not a refuge, not Haozi hole where you can hide one day at a time."
He paused, his gaze sweeping across the crowd.
"We must survive here, we must become stronger, we must figure out what these ruins beneath our feet hold, and more importantly, we must understand—can we, those with incomplete Martial Soul, those born with deficiencies, those who have been abandoned, still forge a different path?"
Shi Jian's breathing became heavy.
Lu Yuan took out another roll of animal hide from his pocket and unfolded it. It wasn't a map, but lines of charcoal writing.
"I've given this place a name," he said. "' The Land Where the Spark First Ignited.' It's not a sect, not a gang, but the beginnings of an 'academy.'"
Someone whispered, repeating, "The academy?"
"Yes." Lu Yuan nodded. "Learn knowledge, learn cultivation, learn how to turn our 'useless' Martial Soul into useful abilities. Learn how to bypass those shackles that are naturally Shackles around our necks."
He pointed to the words on the animal skin.
"This is the preliminary charter. First, everyone will be assigned tasks according to their abilities and willingness: construction, guard duty, resource gathering, logistics, and research support—each with their own responsibilities. Not being able to fight is fine; being able to dig, identify herbs, or repair things are all contributions."
"Second, resource allocation. Basic survival necessities—food, water, and safe shelter—are guaranteed per capita. But if you want more, such as soul crystal fragments for cultivation, better tools, or learning opportunities, you have to exchange them for ' Contribution Points.' How do you earn points? By completing assigned tasks, participating in exploration, making improvements, and teaching others what you know."
He looked at the woman with the "Weaving Shuttle" Martial Soul. "Auntie Wang has been mending clothes these past few days, saving three robes that were originally going to be thrown away. That counts as a contribution, three points."
The woman lowered her head and rubbed her hands together; her ears were slightly red.
"Third," Lu Yuan continued, "We will establish a basic training and learning system. Shen Moxin, Mo Chen, and I will teach regularly. The content will range from the most basic Soul Power control and danger identification to Martial Soul characteristic analysis and the principles of simple mechanisms. Anyone who wants to listen can come, but after listening, you must practice, and after practicing, you must pass the assessment. Passing the assessment will reward you with points."
Lin Xiao crossed his arms and twitched his lips. "Class?"
"Including you." Lu Yuan glanced at him. "Your combat intuition is strong, but there's a slight stagnation in your Soul Power circulation. Didn't you notice it? After the class, you might be able to find the reason."
Lin Xiao remained silent.
"Fourth, establish a ' Council '." Lu Yuan read out the last point, "Five members: myself, Shen Moxin, Mo Chen, Lin Xiao, and Shi Jian. Each will be responsible for daily affairs, and for major issues—such as whether to explore a certain area in depth, whether to accept new members, and how to deal with external threats— the Council will discuss and vote on them."
Shi Jian looked up abruptly, incredulous. "I... I can do it too?"
"You represent the sixteen brothers who joined later," Lu Yuan said calmly. "You are responsible for speaking out about their thoughts and their difficulties, and you are also responsible for clearly explaining the Council's decisions and carrying them out."
Shi Jian's chest heaved as he nodded repeatedly.
Lu Yuan put away the animal hide.
"That's all for the charter. It's not perfect, but we can revise it later. But there's one thing you must remember—" His voice deepened, "We chose this path not because it's easy, but precisely because it's difficult."
"Outside, the Cloud Mist Sect, the Stone-Splitting Sect, and countless other forces are probably casting a wide net to find us. Inside, no one knows what lies deep within these ruins. The road ahead is arduous; people may die tomorrow."
The firewood crackled and popped in the hearth.
"Therefore, we won't force you." Lu Yuan looked into every pair of eyes. "Those who are willing to stay, abide by these rules, and fight for a future together, I, Lu Yuan, will do my best to lead the way. Those who feel it's too dangerous and want to find another way out, just say so now, and we'll give you some dry food and water, and politely send you off without any hindrance."
No one moved.
Only heavy breathing and tightly pursed lips illuminated by the firelight could be heard.
After a long pause, Shi Jian spoke in a hoarse voice, "Mr. Lu, we... have long since run out of options. What you've given us isn't a path, it's a cliff we'd crawl over even if we had to. But we're willing to climb it."
Behind him, a dozen or so men nodded in unison.
Lu Yuan remained silent for a moment.
"Okay." He only said one word.
The meeting ended. People whispered among themselves, their eyes holding something different. It was no longer a matter of pure, aimless dependence, but rather a weighty, personal choice.
Order, like a vine, quietly takes root in the ruins.
Lu Yuan set up a "research area" at the very back of the residential area using a curtain.
He sat down cross-legged and carefully examined the scrolls of notes and the three "Source Seed" crystals.
The manuscript was badly damaged, written in a mixture of ancient script and rune sketches. Lu Yuan painstakingly deciphered it, relying on a combination of guesswork and fragments of forbidden documents from his past life.
The content confirmed many of his conjectures.
The author of the manuscript believes that the essence of Soul Master cultivation is to establish a connection with and guide the "Origin Energy" between heaven and earth. Martial Soul is the "inherent mark" that connects the channel, and Soul Ring is the "temporary contract" that strengthens the channel. But both the mark and the contract are subject to deep "rules" - just as a river must flow along its bed.
These rules are the "Shackles".
It determines the Innate Soul Power, the manifestation form of Martial Soul, and the absorption period and type of Soul Ring. The author of the manuscript calls it "the underlying grammar of the world."
But the author proposes a wild idea: what if it were possible to briefly "deceive" or "bypass" the grammar?
It's not about breaking it with brute force, which would cause the channel to collapse. Instead, it's about finding the "grey areas" in the syntax, or using "abnormal imprints"—such as Mutated Martial Soul —to establish a non-standard connection with the Origin Energy that is not completely restricted by the rules.
Lu Yuan put down the note, his heart pounding.
He picked up a "Source Seed" crystal. It was grayish-white, the size of an egg, with a rough and dull surface like an ordinary stone. But when he held it in his palm, he could feel the dormant, primal energy fluctuations within, as if they were about to awaken at any moment.
He channeled a wisp of his Soul Power and probed the crystal with extreme slowness and caution.
Buzz.
Blue Silver Grass appeared on its own in the palm of his hand, its silver buds trembling slightly. Inside the crystal, the dormant energy seemed to be stirred, rippling out with an extremely faint ripple.
It's neither repulsion nor attraction.
It's more like a... distant resonance. Like a sleeping beast hearing the footsteps of its kind in a dream.
Lu Yuan immediately severed the Soul Power.
Cold sweat beaded on his forehead.
This thing is too dangerous. The notes mention that ancient Soul Engineer tried to use these crystals to directly communicate with the Origin, but most of the time the energy went berserk and backfired on them. They were failed, defective products, untamed beasts.
But now, this beast seems to be reacting in a rather unusual way to his Martial Soul.
As he was deep in thought, he heard hurried footsteps outside the curtain.
"Mr. Lu!" Li Wangye's voice was low and tense.
Lu Yuan put away the crystal and the notebook, then lifted the curtain and went out.
Li Wangye's face was covered in dust, and his eyes looked a little panicked. "We're clearing out that abandoned passage leading uphill on the east side, the one that's half collapsed... we found something."
"Traces of Soul Beast?"
"No." Li Wangye swallowed hard. "It's... human footprints. And ashes from a campfire, buried very shallowly. The ashes are still damp, not completely dry."
Lu Yuan's eyes narrowed. "How long?"
"No more than three days," Li Wangye said, his voice hoarse. "The footprints went deeper into the ruins. We didn't dare go any further and rushed back to report."
Beside him, Lin Xiao had moved closer at some point, his amber pupils slightly contracting in the dim light.
"Someone," he said, licking his canines, his voice low, "Got in before us, or followed us in."
Lu Yuan remained silent.
The firelight cast flickering shadows on the cloth curtain, and in the distance came Shi Jian's shouts urging the reinforcement of the walls.
The ruins, which had just begun to show signs of life, suddenly appeared exceptionally empty and quiet.
So quiet you could hear it; deep in the darkness, perhaps another pair of eyes were silently watching this newly ignited Spark.
