The Labyrinth of Future Fragments
When "Messenger Two" entered "Ruins of the Future", the portholes on the bridge turned into kaleidoscopes.
Countless transparent "Future Fragment" float in this star field, each reflecting a possible ending for a certain plane: in some fragments, the Balance Star Cluster and the Entropy Increase Star Cluster erupt into a war of laws, ultimately perishing together; in some fragments, the time cycle of the Eternal Star completely goes out of control, dragging the surrounding star field into endless repetition; and in other fragments, a peaceful scene unfolds—two star clusters coexist harmoniously, and time and memory form a perfect closed loop, which is the future that Tang Nian and Lan Che have always dreamed of.
"This is a 'superposition of possibilities'." On Lan Che's detector screen, the energy trajectory of the Future Fragment showed a tree-like branching pattern, with each branch representing a different outcome caused by a key choice. "Like the ' Parallel Mirror Image Theory ' of Crystal Galaxy, each choice splits into a new future, and here, all possibilities are visualized."
At the center of the Ruins of the Future, suspended in the air, lies a "Labyrinth of Choice" composed of countless branching light trails. At the top of the maze, a colossal Future Fragment emits a soft glow. Within this fragment, all the planes of the Balance Star Cluster have reached an unprecedented level of perfection—the most perfect "Ultimate Balance" among all possibilities.
"But the path to Ultimate Balance is blocked by the labyrinth." Tang Nian's Purple Demon Eye pierced through the forked light paths and saw that every corner of the labyrinth concealed a "choice trap"—a path that seemed to lead to perfection ended in fragments of destruction; while some thorny forks in the road had a glimmer of hope at their end.
Their mission is to find the true path to "Ultimate Balance" within the Labyrinth of Choice. Observers of the Entropy Increase Star Cluster have warned that the fragments of the Ruins of the Future will amplify the explorers' desires, causing them to lose their way in longing and mistake the "desired future" for the "correct future."
"Be careful, these fragments can lead us astray." Tang Nian gripped the Blade of Chaos tightly. The imprint of the Memory Star Core within the blade suddenly lit up, projecting a scene into her mind—a tragedy of a civilization that, in its relentless pursuit of a "perfect future," ultimately stifled all possibilities. "True balance is not about having only one perfect ending, but about allowing all possibilities to coexist, finding a dynamic fulcrum in the choices we make."
After piloting "Messenger Two" into the maze, the first choice comes up.
Two light trails appeared before them: the left trail was covered with colorful bricks representing "order," and in the fragments at the end, the Balance Star Cluster unified all planes with absolute order, without conflict, but also without vitality; the right trail was covered with dark sand symbolizing "disorder," and in the corresponding fragments, the star cluster evolved in complete freedom, full of vitality, but also harboring the risk of destruction.
"This is an 'either/or' trap." Lan Che immediately saw through the trick. He maneuvered the warship to hover between the two light trails. "The real path is not in the extremes, but in the space between them."
He activated the warship's "Law Fusion Engine," injecting ordered and disordered energy into the thrusters in precise proportions. A rotating, two-colored light shield formed around the warship's hull, cutting through the space between the two light tracks to reveal a hidden dark track—composed of alternating bricks and quicksand, neither absolutely ordered nor completely disordered.
As they continued along the dark path, they encountered even more complex choices.
At a crossroads, Future Fragment reflect the divide between "intervention" and "laissez-faire": in the intervention path, they forcibly correct the imbalance of a certain plane, but trigger a more serious backlash; in the laissez-faire path, they turn a blind eye to the imbalance and ultimately watch that plane self-destruct.
"The guardians of the Balance Star Cluster cannot be dictators who control everything, nor can they be indifferent bystanders." Tang Nian recalled the cyclical energy of the Migration Plane. "True intervention is providing 'the possibility of choice' at crucial moments, rather than deciding their direction for them."
She had Lan Che release a "Balance Seed" towards the intersection of the two paths—after the seed landed, it split into countless tiny points of light. Some merged into the intervention path, mitigating the side effects of forced correction; others drifted towards the uninhibited path, providing a glimmer of awakening for the self-destructive plane. As the seed grew, the two paths began to bend towards the middle, eventually merging into a new path.
The traps in the Labyrinth of Choice are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
Some fragments tempted them with "short-term benefits"—sacrificing a weaker plane in exchange for the temporary stability of the star cluster; others tested them with "moral blackmail"—someone had to sacrifice so that more people could survive. But Tang Nian and Lan Che always remembered the revelation of the Memory Star Core: the choice of balance can never come at the cost of "sacrificing the minority," and true perfection must include the possibilities of all individuals.
In the heart of the maze, they finally encountered their most difficult choice.
There is only one Future Fragment here—the laws of the Balance Star Cluster and the Entropy Increase Star Cluster have completely merged, forming an "absolute unity" without any difference. The star clusters in the fragment are extremely stable, but they have also lost the possibility of evolution. All planes look exactly the same, and all life has the same thoughts.
"This is an illusion of ' Ultimate Balance '." Lan Che's voice was wary. In his blue pupils, the energy flow of the fragments appeared as a monotonous straight line, without any fluctuation. "Just like the absolute order that Mo Chen pursued, using uniformity to obliterate the soul of balance—difference and symbiosis."
Tang Nian's Blade of Chaos erupted with unprecedented brilliance at this moment. All the imprints within the blade—the dual colors of the prism, the emotions of the ring star, the cycle of migration, the eternal memory, and those forgotten yet remembered beliefs—simultaneously cried out, refusing to accept this "false perfection."
"True Ultimate Balance allows for imperfection," Tang Nian said to the fragments. "Just as the Primordial Core has both balance and an end, the future of the star cluster should also have the tug-of-war between order and disorder, the cycle of time and the flow of memory, the glories that are remembered and the ordinariness that is forgotten. This is dynamic balance, a balance that forever maintains possibility."
As her words fell, the false fragments shattered instantly. From the remnants of the fragments, a real path appeared—a winding light trail. On the light trail, the laws of the Balance Star Cluster and the Entropy Increase Star Cluster Entanglement but did not merge. The Time Star Ring and the Memory Star Core echoed each other but did not overlap. Each plane maintained its own uniqueness, yet they were connected to each other through the light of the Star Wheel.
At the end of the light trail is not a fixed Future Fragment, but a flowing "Sea of Possibilities". On the surface of the sea, countless new futures are being born and disappearing as naturally as breathing.
"This is the true future." Tang Nian and Lan Che stood on the bridge of "Messenger Two," gazing at this Sea of Possibilities, their hearts filled with peace. "There is no single perfect outcome, only the belief in maintaining balance in every choice, allowing all possibilities to find their place."
As they piloted their warships out of the Labyrinth of Choice, the fragments of the Ruins of the Future began to reassemble. Those fragments representing destruction did not disappear, but instead became the "boundary" of the Sea of Possibilities, reminding every explorer that the risk of imbalance always exists, and the guardianship of balance never ceases.
"The future is not predetermined, but shaped by the choices we make in each moment," Lan Che wrote in his journal. "The foresight of balance is not about predicting the future, but about knowing that no matter what the future holds, we can find a fulcrum of balance within it."
Tang Nian stood by the porthole, watching as the Sea of Possibilities connected with the Long River of Memory and the Time Star Ring, forming a "River of Balance" that spanned the past, present, and future. In the river, the light of the Primordial Core flickered, marking both the beginning and the end.
"We should go home," Tang Nian said softly.
Messenger Two changed course and headed towards the Balance Star Cluster. On the ship's light shield, the possibilities of the future and the memories of the past intertwined to form a flowing star map—it was their own cluster, where they had experienced the pain of imbalance, the courage to repair, and the yearning for the ultimate. In the end, they understood that the true meaning of balance is to always be on the road, carrying all possibilities.
As the warship disappeared into the depths of the Sea of Stars, the Sea of Possibilities of the Ruins of the Future stretched out into the vast universe, like the story of balance, which has no end, only new chapters constantly being written through choices and perseverance. Meanwhile, in the Temple of Balance in Heaven Dou City, Xiao Wu and Blue Crystal gazed at the light of the Star Wheel, awaiting their return, awaiting to hear the story of that Sea of Possibilities, and awaiting to join all the guardians in welcoming a tomorrow full of infinite possibilities for the star cluster.
