Background / History

Yang Jian lived in a rented apartment during high school and knew its residents well enough to recognize a fabricated account of an occupied apartment. His father died in a car accident; the figure later appearing as his father was a ghost 17 19.

His friendship with Zhang Wei also dates to high school. Yang Jian describes their arrangement as handling the fighting while Zhang Wei paid the medical bills afterward, connecting his early self-reliance to growing up without a father 30.

By the Hunger Ghost Incident, Yang Jian has a villa and access to a gold safe house in Guanjiang Residential Complex. Before returning to battle, he shelters family and friends there and arranges accommodation near the safe house for Jiang Li’s companions, although not everyone is permitted inside 6 8.

He supports letting a capable Jiang Li operate independently for efficiency, but refuses to confront two S-class threats when his own ghosts are nearing revival. He also bargains firmly over scarce resources, demanding two red Ghost Candles before surrendering his own 4 6.

Despite his bluntness, he objects to treating people as expendable. He criticizes Wang Xiaoming for sending Zhang Han into danger through coercion, helps fulfill Sun Yi’s final request, and rescues Zhang Han from an approaching ghost 6 10.

His loyalty to allies outweighs institutional pressure. During the dispute over Jiang Li’s wooden box, he prepares to intervene if Jiang Li loses and openly rejects Headquarters’ attempt to claim another person’s property. Afterward, he offers continued support whenever his own circumstances allow it 28 29 30.
