Before transmigrating, Shen Niannian was a twenty-four-year-old male office worker who enjoyed mystery games, escape rooms, and rules-horror stories. After going to sleep, she awakened as a nineteen-year-old female university student. She retained her previous life's memories but none belonging to her new body 1.

Her body's earlier history is known mainly through people who recognize her. During a childhood visit to Blood Moon Hotel, its owner's blood mirror—kept for over three hundred years—was shattered on the day she left. Bai Feiyue says she served as Niannian's maid for seven days, while Ning Hongzhuang remembers repeatedly cleaning up her messes in Mirror City 2 15 21.

Ning Hongzhuang states that Niannian disappeared from everyone's sight more than ten years earlier and that many people searched for her. Official records offer little clarification: both parents lack valid records, her birth file is missing, and her life before fourteen contains extensive gaps. Niannian describes those early memories as hazy without revealing her transmigration or the Identity Archive 14 15 22.

After the Lightless Train, the Archive identifies the powerful presence who called her home as her father. His name and full identity remain inaccessible 26 27.

Niannian is cautious, suspicious of unexplained generosity, and strongly motivated by survival. At Blood Moon Hotel, she initially interprets the staff's hospitality as an attempt to fatten her up before eating her. Her caution also extends to humans: she checks Bureau visitors through the peephole and verifies their credential numbers before admitting them 3 15.

She treats rules as precise conditions rather than accepting their most frightening interpretation. Her experience with mystery games and rules horror helps her focus on wording, identity, and the difference between a required action and its lethal consequences 1 21 28 31.

Although willing to accept protection, she dislikes depending entirely on inexplicable goodwill. She chooses to pursue Archive upgrades because a future entity might not recognize her—or might hold a grudge. As her confidence grows, she becomes more willing to bargain with powerful acquaintances and exploit their reluctance to offend whoever protects her 6 36 49.
