History
Founding
Jose first resolved to found a nation under favorable internal and external conditions. The planned capital was a new city within Moduo Peak Forest, with Olivia designing it 156. Although his controlled territory—including the Underdark—already qualified as a small kingdom, Jose initially adopted the more restrained title of Sussex Duchy while consolidating wealth and completing the new city 183.
After the magic tower beneath Moduo Peak Forest was completed, Jose announced his intent to establish the Sussex Kingdom and assigned offices, fiefs, and preparatory work to his dependents 199. Oka City became the capital, with the Red Fort serving as the royal seat 216 228.
The founding ceremony was held in Oka City after invitations were sent to neighboring powers, including the Four Northern Kingdoms, Sun Sail Port, the Barbarian Holy City, the Gloomy Forest elves, and major indigenous tribes 217. Jose declared the kingdom's establishment before a military parade displaying its Ogre, Kobold, Boarman, Goblin, and Fishman citizens; the celebration concluded with a government-funded three-day carnival 228 229.
Early Expansion and Trade Route
At its founding, the kingdom's surface territory included Moduo Peak Forest, the Triangle Plains, and part of the central Great Prairie. The naturalization of prairie natives more than doubled its surface area without a military campaign; its underground territory and Underdark holdings added roughly another third 229.
As a landlocked country, the kingdom sought a southern route through the Gloomy Forest and the Duchy of Norn to access the broader civilized world and avoid dependence on Sun Sail Port, Dana, and Odyssey intermediaries 229 243. Jose covertly backed the Second Prince Belden's rise to power in Norn, then used repeated diplomatic missions to reduce local prejudice against Sussex citizens and normalize trade 243 289.
Ogre labor completed a broad trade route through the Gloomy Forest after more than a year of construction. The route connected the kingdom to the Four Northern Kingdoms, transformed northern trade, and made Sussex goods—especially grain, ironware, and warhorses—high-demand commodities 292.
Northern Conflicts
The Red Nest Matriarch Savannah launched an invasion against the Sussex Kingdom with an army of roughly 300,000 monsters 312. Sussex forces relied on intelligence, disciplined formations, standardized equipment, marksmen, war machines, and heavily equipped Ogre shield units to defeat the invasion 312 313. The victory cost 154 dead and 1,003 wounded, while inflicting vastly heavier losses on the Red Nest 316.
Belden later submitted the Duchy of Norn to Jose's rule, became a Dragonkin through the Dragon Vein transformation, and became Jose's first vassal. This gave the Sussex Kingdom an overt foothold among the human states of the Four Northern Kingdoms 318.
The conflict with the Red Nest resumed around the Imperial Ceremony. Sussex forces breached Red Nest fortifications, captured most of its dragon force through Anti-Air Domain magic and specialized venom, and eventually defeated Savannah herself 378 382. Jose compelled Savannah to leave Tydanore and relinquish her Demigod position under a Devil Contract, ending the Red Nest's continental presence 382.
Transition to Empire
After territorial expansion and the construction of additional magic towers, Jose changed the state's name to the Sussex Empire. The five-tower system was linked into a unified defensive network, and the empire's territory exceeded one-third of the Northern Territory 326.
The Imperial Ceremony in Oka City displayed the state's diverse population, mass-produced potions, enchanted military equipment, Land Dragons, Sub-dragons, and the weapon known as the Howl of the Empire 341 342 343. Jose also established a formal noble hierarchy, elevating leading officials and familiars—including Ergou, Kashi, and Olivia—to major titles and responsibilities 344.
Government and Society
- Central rule — Jose personally directed foreign policy, military strategy, high-level appointments, and major economic decisions from the Red Fort 243 312.
- Prime Minister — Ergou Bloodtooth managed state affairs, diplomatic missions, and policy execution as Jose's chief minister 228 289.
- Internal security — The Red Dagger served as an intelligence and covert-operations organization under VanCleef, supporting espionage, counter-sabotage, and diplomatic security 217 289.
- Citizen registration — Vassals, free citizens, and nobles possessed distinct certificates or documents; town guards inspected entrants and required outsiders to register 338.
- Naturalization policy — Jose accepted large numbers of prairie natives and poor residents as citizens, while requiring schools and assimilation measures to integrate them into the kingdom 227.
- Later imperial ideology — The Sussex Empire promoted “Equality of All Races,” allowing qualified individuals of different races to study in its schools if they met admissions and tuition requirements 397.
Economy and Infrastructure
Trade and Industry
- The Gloomy Forest trade route made the Sussex Kingdom a northern trade center, with commercial tax becoming one of its four major economic pillars alongside food, weapons, and magical industrial products 306.
- Its weapon-production chain used Kobold miners, Minotaur and Gray Dwarf processors, and official channels to supply finished weapons to foreign markets 306.
- Trade profits funded the purchase of southern magical knowledge, allowing the kingdom to establish professional training, inscription, alchemy, potion-making, and a broader magical industrial system 292.
- Within five years of the trade route's opening, magical industrial products accounted for twenty percent of foreign trade; domestic magical goods became cheaper and more accessible to citizens 292.
- Large-scale potion production later became a major imperial export and a source of conflict with the Trade City-State 345.
Magic Tower Network
- The first completed magic tower beneath Moduo Peak Forest was divided between Jose's private domain, talent cultivation, and military functions 199.
- Five major magic towers were eventually linked into a defense system protecting more than one-third of the Northern Territory 326.
- Fighting near the network allowed Jose to draw upon the entire system's power, greatly increasing his combat ability and deterring attacks on imperial territory 390.
Military
- The kingdom fielded a multi-racial army of Ogres, Gnolls, Kobolds, Orcs, Boarmen, Minotaurs, Goblins, Fishmen, Harpies, and Sub-dragons 229 342 343.
- Its forces emphasized professional training, discipline, standardized equipment, coordination between branches, and war-machine support rather than reliance on individual monster strength 313.
- Ogre phalanxes wore crimson full-body steel armor made by Minotaur smiths, creating heavily armored assault and shield units 228.
- Kobolds formed the industrial backbone of mining, road construction, and building rather than serving primarily as combat troops 229.
- By later estimates, the state had over 26.54 million citizens and 300,000 registered professionals; more than half of those professionals served in the military 304.
- The Red Dragon Ring Banner served as a symbol of the kingdom's army in battle 313.
Relationships

- Ergou Bloodtooth — First Prime Minister and Jose's principal administrator; later elevated to Grand Duke 228 344.
- Gloomy Forest — Allied elven power; cooperation included diplomacy, medicinal-herb development, and joint action against external threats 231 292 303.
- Duchy/Kingdom of Norn — Became a Sussex vassal under King Belden, opening the kingdom's influence into human lands 318.
- Northern Witch Council — A long-term hostile power whose control of the Northern Lands obstructed Sussex expansion and the Norn trade route 243 323.
- Red Nest — Major northern rival; its invasions were defeated, and its Matriarch Savannah ultimately left Tydanore under contract with Jose 312 382.
- Dragon Worship Cult — Contractually restrained from directly attacking the kingdom for twenty years, but continued to seek indirect ways to undermine it 290.
- Moon Elves and Wind Whisperer Alliance — Partners in the coalition that protected druids healing the Withered Soil 285.
