Background / History

Ergou was one of Jose's two initial familiars alongside his brother, Sorda. During the battle against the Petrification Lizards, he supported Jose with Enlarge Person, strengthening the dragon at a critical moment. 24 37

In the Bloodtooth Mines, Ergou handled practical survival work for the kobolds. He organized food collection, expanded winter stores, and developed mushroom and wood-ear cultivation; his pine-nut reserves eventually filled a warehouse and required another to be dug. 30 37 He also served as Jose's guide through the tribe's living areas, explaining the Great Rift used to dispose of waste. 26

Although initially focused solely on serving Jose, Ergou admitted that he wanted personal strength as well. Jose recognized the shared ambition and explained the limits of a Dragon Vein Warlock's inherited magic, encouraging him to pursue mage training as a second path. 38

As Jose's forces expanded, Ergou became a regular administrator and field commander. He recorded significant events during Jose's slumbers, relayed information from other familiars, gathered intelligence on hostile activity, and maintained reports for his master. 70 87 90 138

He commanded monster forces during the Underdark campaign against Ink Bone City. After locating the city with Hawkeye Technique, he chose to press the assault while Jose fought the Drow High Priest above the battlefield. Ergou led the army's spearhead through the breached walls and later managed post-war cleanup, reconnaissance, and reports on the newly conquered territory. 171 172 173

By the time of the Sussex Kingdom's development, Ergou had become its Prime Minister. He supervised diplomacy, economic concerns, professional cultivation, magic-tower construction, and the organization of the Bloodtooth Kobolds for Oka City's opening. 216 244 289 304 He later served as Imperial Chancellor, handling state affairs during Jose's absence and helping redirect the Red Nest Matriarch's invading army toward the Southern Allied Forces. 372 379

Personality

Ergou is intensely loyal to Jose and consistently treats his master's orders as his highest priority. Early in their relationship, he was visibly intimidated by Jose's presence, privately likening service to the dragon to accompanying a tiger. 26 His loyalty nevertheless translates into action: he manages tasks beyond expectations, immediately complies with difficult requests, and continues cultivating without being prompted. 38 133 372

He is ambitious but disciplined. His desire to become stronger drove him to develop both his warlock bloodline and mage studies, while his later work shows patience with administration, intelligence gathering, logistics, and diplomacy. 38 191 289 He is also capable of independent strategic thought, questioning Jose's staged diplomatic missions to Norne and understanding the need to avoid creating long-term resentment toward the Sussex Kingdom. 289
