Background / History

Gerald is first tied to Richard through the entrance exam: the Seven-Headed Demonic Sheep that Richard kills is an artificial Magic Beast created by Gerald 11. Richard later recognizes Gerald’s name from the Academy mentor listings and recalls him as Anna’s mentor and the wizard who made his wizard robe 19.

As a Second-Ring Alchemist Wizard, Gerald is listed as a major Alchemy School mentor with a huge apprentice base. His apprenticeship system is commercially practical: many apprentices work in his alchemy workshop, while only a few receive close personal guidance 19 22.

Anna brings Richard to Gerald after seeing the extreme purity of Richard’s Red Mercury. Gerald evaluates the Red Mercury, sees through Richard’s Bloodline Alchemy state, and gives him the Pale Mask magic armor blueprint as a trial 23 24. After Richard passes, Gerald has him sign a Soul Contract, performs Enlightenment for him, and provides beginner curriculum materials 31.

Gerald later gives Richard more advanced alchemical inheritance, including the complete alchemical spell set and access to equipment for training the Body of Adaptation 61. He also teaches Richard about the Secret Realm, Wizard society, the Truth Council, Black and White Wizard Academies, the World Origin, and the Tower of Truth promotion process 65 66 97 98 99.

His relationship with Richard grows from mentor-apprentice into collaboration. Gerald supports Richard’s potion machine revelation, introduces him to the Golden Dawn Society, handles Merchant Guild business, and later negotiates commercial matters around the Spell Support Vehicle 71 98 105 190.

Gerald prepares for a self-designed Third-Ring Promotion Ceremony after Great Wizard Kanon helps solve his missing-material problem. He chooses to advance in the Black Tower where he has lived for thousands of years rather than at the Tower of Truth 196. After succeeding, he becomes a Third-Ring Wizard and is appointed Vice Dean 275 276.

During the Academy War, Gerald fights as a Third-Ring Wizard whose combat strength depends heavily on chimeras. His long-time octopus-like chimera is targeted by two Meteorite Academy Third-Ring Wizards, prompting Richard’s Fire Lizard forces to help protect it 323.

In the later Civilization War era, Gerald is conscripted into logistical production and eventually works as a factory director in an Alchemy World producing humanoid chimeras 480 482. Even in old age, he refuses to be transferred away from demanding work, saying the position is where he can best use his skills 637 724.

Gerald lives long enough to learn that Richard has become a Great Wizard and is returning home, news that moves him to tears 566. He later reunites with Richard through Richard’s Nightmare World return 636. In the New Era, Gerald dies peacefully; Richard forges an Orichalcum coffin for him and arranges a simple funeral attended by only a few close figures, as most of Gerald’s friends and family have died in the war 792.

Appearance

Gerald looks outwardly like an ordinary old man: white or graying hair, a bushy beard, and a wrinkled face. His most unusual feature is hidden in his eyes, where Richard notices tiny compound eyes deep within his pupils 23.

  • Graying/white hair and bushy beard 23
  • Wrinkled, elderly appearance despite being a powerful Wizard 23
  • Pupils containing tiny compound-eye structures 23
  • Later shows visible life-force decay and additional white hair as he approaches old age 439
  • Maintains a plain personal room with only essentials: bookshelf, desk, chair, and bed 566 636

Personality

Gerald is stern, demanding, and procedure-minded as a mentor. Even after Anna personally recommends Richard, Gerald insists on testing him with the Pale Mask assignment before accepting him 23 24.

He is commercially practical and sometimes shrewd. His apprenticeship model, workshop labor structure, and later Merchant Guild management all show an alchemist who understands resources, production, and long-term business 19 73 108 190.

Despite disliking Alchemy Machinery, Gerald does not suppress students whose talents point that way. He grudgingly tolerates Anna’s mechanical focus and later supports Richard’s machine-made potions and Spell Support Vehicle work, showing that his professional ethics outweigh his personal preferences 71 81 105 188.

Gerald values truth over pride. He is initially shaken when Richard shows him Fire Lizard chimera technology, but after examining the evidence, he accepts that native alchemy can hold knowledge Wizards lack 278 295.

He is proud of Richard to the point of openly showing him off before old friends. Jerar quickly recognizes this when Gerald brings Richard to the Golden Dawn Society, and Gerald becomes smug when Richard’s strategic magic equipment is mentioned 98.

In old age, Gerald becomes an old-school Wizard surrounded by a changing world. He continues reading magic books while newer Wizards prefer crystal-ball dramas, and he privately feels that many modern Wizards are merely Mortals with Wizard power rather than true researchers 566.
