Chapter 44: I Will Help You Defeat Your Evil Brother
"Normal technology on Earth right now shouldn't have anything that can threaten me—not even an ordinary nuclear bomb."
David's strength had surged, and a faint smile curled at the corner of his mouth.
Unless it was one of those super-massive nukes capable of triggering a global nuclear apocalypse, nothing else could harm him.
As for why he said "normal technology"...
The science of the DC world wasn't exactly scientific either. Earth always had geniuses who occasionally cooked up black tech that was top-tier across the entire universe.
For example, the Metal Legion, true artificial intelligence robots born from Earth's technology, or the Red Tornado, who could trade blows with Kryptonians... even the Amazo robot, which could copy any superpower it saw and had once defeated the Justice League.
"The latter is almost on par with Doomsday, the ultimate weapon of destruction created by Kryptonian biotechnology."
Shaking off those stray thoughts, David prepared to test one last application of his abilities before leaving.
"—Firing energy rays from the eyes."
Thanos had biological modifications and high-tech armor, while he had the ability to absorb and manipulate energy.
"I already tried releasing energy from my palms. My eyes should work too!"
David channeled the energy within him, gathering it into his eyes. After a slight warmth, two purple energy rays, radiating a scorching, destructive aura, shot out.
Two charred, blackened trenches carved across the ground, converging at a single point.
Seeing it worked, he grinned with excitement and increased the energy output.
Zzzt!
The ground melted into magma under the terrifying heat, boiling and evaporating.
The extreme heat dried up the moisture in the surrounding soil, cracked the earth, and withered the leaves, curling them up.
If he kept going, the nearby trees might catch fire.
Not wanting to start a wildfire, David cut off the energy. The residual purple light in his eyes still glowed, making him look like a god standing upon the earth, utterly imposing. He blinked his slightly warm eyes.
"No big problem."
There was no difference between releasing energy from his eyes and his hands—no danger involved.
Having tested all his abilities, David calmed his mind and turned to leave.
Clark's talk of a so-called comparison, of winning or losing—he didn't care about any of that.
"Even though Clark's abilities should make this easy to handle, I'm still a little uneasy."
Even a fully-powered Superman occasionally messed up, let alone a budget version.
Crack!
Suddenly, the faint sound of a dry twig breaking in the distance.
"Come out!"
David frowned immediately, his gaze snapping toward a bush in the distance, and he barked out.
He'd been too excited after getting the new template, forgetting everything else, and hadn't noticed someone watching from the side.
To be fair, he still didn't have Clark's super hearing or super vision—though most of the time, Clark's abilities were useless anyway.
From behind the bush, a tall, beautiful woman stepped out. Shock lingered on her face as she stared at the magma on the ground, murmuring to herself.
"His eyes can burn everything..."
"You?"
Seeing the figure, David was a little surprised. He hadn't expected the person who discovered his abilities to be someone he knew.
"So the legend was true after all."
Kara looked at David, her eyes lighting up as if she'd seen a mythical figure step into reality. She murmured excitedly.
"What legend?"
Having been caught using his abilities, David kept his face cold but wasn't too panicked.
Because the person in front of him wasn't ordinary either.
"When did you get here?"
"David Kent, don't worry. I've known about your abilities for a while. I won't expose them to anyone."
Kara, drawn over by the energy blast that had carved a path nearly half a kilometer long, raised her hands to show she meant no harm, speaking excitedly.
"Known for a while?"
David's frown deepened, suspicion filling his eyes.
"When you and your brother Clark Kent smelled like bugs at the edge of the forest, I saw everything from deep in the woods."
Kara held nothing back, laying it all out.
Now she was certain which of the two brothers was Nama!
After hearing her account, David's eyes flickered as he pieced it together. She had seen him and Clark dealing with Gregg, displaying abilities beyond normal humans. That was why this Kara had been secretly watching him and Clark.
After that party, he'd occasionally felt someone secretly observing him and Clark on campus.
"Since you've managed to keep your mouth shut all these days, I hope you can keep it that way."
David's voice turned cold, danger flickering in his eyes as he made no effort to hide the warning. He turned to leave.
"Unless you want me to pay you a visit and make sure you never speak again."
"Wait, Nama."
Seeing David about to leave, Kara quickly said, "You need to be careful of your brother."
"My name isn't Nama."
At the odd address, David paused and tilted his head slightly. "And why should I be careful of Clark?"
Sure, Clark had been annoyingly clingy lately—worrying about this and that, keeping a close eye on him to stop him from walking down dangerous paths—but it wasn't enough to warrant caution.
This Kara was strange from head to toe. The way she looked at him was off, her eyes burning with a fervor like a devoted follower wanting to trail behind him.
"In our tribe's legends, your name is Nama. And your brother is called Sergei."
"Nama? Sergei?"
David turned, puzzled, not understanding what she was talking about.
"What tribe legend?"
"Our Kavachi Tribe has a long history spanning five hundred years. Five centuries ago, a man from another planet fell in love with our Tribe Mother. From that forbidden romance, our tribe was born."
Facing David, Kara slowly recounted the history her people had kept secret from outsiders, her face barely containing long-suppressed excitement.
"The day he left, he soared into the sky and left a prophecy: five hundred years later, his kin would descend with heavenly fire, named Nama, to stop his brother Sergei from destroying the Kavachi Tribe and all people."
"Aside from the alien part, it's a pretty rustic legend. But it has nothing to do with me."
David raised an eyebrow and walked off.
He was certain he wasn't some Nama, and the Sergei who would supposedly destroy the world couldn't possibly be Clark.
"I'm a born-and-raised Earthling."
"In the legend, Nama's traits aren't just descending with heavenly fire."
Kara caught up, speaking quickly.
"He also has strength surpassing ten men combined, and beams from his eyes that can burn everything."
"You fit all of these, David!"
The tribe had long speculated that the meteor shower with flames seventeen years ago roughly matched the prophecy's timing—could it be the heavenly fire from the legend?
That day in the forest, after seeing both David and Clark possess superhuman strength, Kara had formed a suspicion amid her confusion.
A pair of brothers with extraordinary power, one with purple skin unlike any Earthling—could they be the brothers from the prophecy?
"I've been watching you two since I saw you in the woods, trying to figure out which one is Nama and which is Sergei."
As she spoke, she revealed her ability to prove she wasn't crazy.
Kara's palm transformed into a pure white wolf's claw.
"Until just now, when I saw beams shoot from your eyes and melt the earth into lava, I confirmed your identity. You are the prophesied savior, Nama!"
"A wolf? The rumors in town about a White Giant Wolf roaming the forest at night—was that you?"
Seeing her wolf claw, David paused, a bit surprised.
As for Kara's legend, he still took it as just a story, his mind unmoved.
Maybe aliens, tribes descended from aliens, and even prophecies of aliens returning to Earth were all real—but it definitely had nothing to do with him.
"This is the convergence of fate, Nama. I am the daughter of the Kavachi Tribe chieftain, bearing the Bracelet left by the Tribe Mother, and I am the one who discovered you."
The tribe had waited five hundred years for the prophesied one to appear. Kara, with a heroic air about her brows, was certain David was Nama.
Her voice trembled with excitement as she raised her hand, revealing a beautiful silver Bracelet inlaid with what looked like turquoise on her wrist.
"I will wholeheartedly and unreservedly assist you in defeating your evil brother Clark and help you stop him from destroying the world!"
