Background / History

Krypton was a life-bearing planet in Sector 2183 and, at its height, a vast interstellar colonial power. Its empire colonized numerous inhabited worlds and was feared even by the Green Lantern Corps; David states that Krypton had once colonized nearly all known life-bearing planets. 127

Its society was rigidly stratified. A person's social function was determined at birth: generals produced generals, scientists produced scientists, and the ruling class suppressed individuality. The Green Lantern database depicts Kryptonians as “naturally cold-blooded,” though David considers this characterization biased and rejects the idea that every Kryptonian was inherently so. 127

Krypton's later government became stagnant and corrupt, abandoning much of its former dominion and retreating into isolation. The planet was eventually destroyed by an explosion of its core, killing most of its population. Jor-El sent his infant son Kal-El to Earth before the disaster, carrying the Codex—genetic information for billions of Kryptonians—within his body. 132 134 144

Several survivors remained. General Zod and his imprisoned officers escaped the Phantom Zone following Krypton's destruction and attempted to terraform Earth into a new Krypton. Their invasion was stopped by Clark and David; surviving soldiers were placed in red-sun confinement. 132 135 136 138

Brainiac had preserved Kandor City and possesses extensive Kryptonite left by Krypton's destruction. He also captured and transformed Zod-El into a mechanical servant, using him to locate and eliminate remaining Kryptonians. 141 142 181

Physiology

Kryptonians outwardly resemble humans, though they are a distinct species. Earth is similar enough to Krypton for Zod to regard it as suitable for conversion into a Kryptonian homeworld. 134 136

Yellow-Sun Empowerment

Exposure to a yellow sun grants Kryptonians extreme physical power. Even a small number of yellow-sun-empowered Kryptonians are described as capable of destroying worlds. 127 134

• Superhuman strength — Kryptonian warriors can shatter lunar terrain, strike with devastating force, and overpower conventional military assets. 135 136

Kryptonite was created by Krypton's destruction. Its radiation causes Kryptonians pain, weakness, and incapacitation; the effect can be delivered through Kryptonite solution or simulated through a Green Lantern Ring with sufficient knowledge of its composition. 136 181 191

Clark becoming a Green Lantern is treated as unprecedented in Corps history. His ring's database contains only limited information on Krypton, reflecting the Corps' historical hostility and fear toward the species. 127 128
