Jiang Bei began as a border soldier whose strength rose abruptly after he obtained Merit Points from killing barbarians. He used the points to upgrade Xing Tian Gong, advancing from Ninth Rank Minor Training to Ninth Rank Great Training during his first recorded battle. 2 His rapid growth made Lin Jie—who had attempted to send him into danger and later plotted to kill him for military merit—view him as an entirely different person from the formerly trusting Jiang Bei. 4 7

Within the Ren-Rank Camp, he earned recognition by defeating Eighth Rank Minor Training warrior Xue Long and becoming a Squad Leader. 21 His rise continued through campaigns against barbarians, gangs, corrupt officials, demonic forces, and hostile clans. At Broken Spear Slope, he broke through amid battle after finding Battalion Commander Xu Qi mortally wounded; Xu Qi’s death became a defining loss for him. 38
