Background / History

Hongjun closely monitors deviations from the Heavenly Mandate. When Fuxi gains an opportunity that should have belonged to Kunpeng, Hongjun investigates the altered fate through Heavenly Dao deduction. He later warns Nuwa to conform to the Heavenly Dao and avoid intervening in Primordial World disputes. 6 10

He supports Laozi's failed attempt to establish Xun Sect by drawing upon destiny and the Heavenly Dao, enabling Laozi to attain sainthood. Hongjun regards the Human Race's destiny as something to be seized after the saint position is secured. 19 20

Houtu's creation of reincarnation and retention of her Ancestral Witch body alarms Hongjun, because both developments contradict the predetermined fate he expects. Unable to trace the source of the change, he seals the Netherworld with Heavenly Dao chains and confines Houtu there to preserve Heavenly Dao supremacy. 52 53

As the Earth Way grows, Hongjun battles Houtu with the Heavenly Dao Wheel. Although he initially forces her back, Houtu empowers the Earth Way with the destinies recorded in the Book of Life and Death, repels him using the World-Destroying Millstone, and damages his foundation. 87 88

Hongjun increasingly treats Lin Fan as the central variable disrupting the Heavenly Mandate. He punishes Nuwa for interfering in the Witch-Demon conflict, assists the Demon Race, attempts to preserve its core forces, and later confronts Lin Fan directly over the Human Race and the Heavenly Origin Sect. 109 116 132

Appearance

Hongjun usually manifests as an indistinct, majestic figure enveloped in immortal mist and radiant light. When his face is visible, he is portrayed as an aged Daoist with a beard. 109 154

  • Often seated on a lotus pedestal or cloud platform. 68 135
  • Appears surrounded by manifest Dao charm, heavenly laws, and immense saintly pressure. 68 132
  • Wears dark Daoist robes during his confrontation with Houtu. 88
  • Carries or employs a whisk and the Jade Plate of Creation. 121 110

Personality

Hongjun presents himself as a detached custodian of heavenly order, repeatedly claiming to act on behalf of the Heavenly Dao and maintain balance. He remains calm even when confronted by the enraged Ancestral Witches, framing Houtu's confinement as the will of Heaven. 53 101

Behind this impartial image, Hongjun is calculating and protective of the Heavenly Dao's dominance. He supports the Demon Race to sustain the Witch-Demon Tribulation, plots to redirect the Human Race's destiny through the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, and strengthens Laozi and Yuanshi to counter the Human Religion. 111 128 150

He is wary rather than reckless when facing threats he cannot fully assess. Hongjun delays acting against Lin Fan because of Nuwa and Houtu, yet continues to seek methods to suppress or eliminate him. 68 84 88
