Background / History

Shang-Chi is the son of Xu Wenwu, the immortal wielder of the Ten Rings, and Ying Li, the former guardian of the Tarot Dimension. Ying Li relinquished her Dragon Power to become mortal and was later killed by Wenwu’s enemies. Wenwu returned to the underworld and trained Shang-Chi and his sister, Xu Xialing, to protect themselves. 448

Unlike his father, Shang-Chi did not accept killing as a solution. He did not understand the idea of avenging his mother and eventually ran away rather than continue living under Wenwu’s influence. He retained his martial-arts training but inherited Ying Li’s disdain for learning magic. 448
