Background / History

Founding and the Uchiha Massacre

Hashirama Senju and Uchiha Madara founded Konoha by joining their two clans. Sasuke later argues that the village system enlarged the scale of warfare rather than ending it, turning conflicts between clans into wars between major military powers. Hashirama acknowledges this criticism during the Five Elements Conference 336.

Under the Second Hokage, the Uchiha became responsible for village security. Their compound stood at Konoha’s edge, separated from the wider population. Sasuke interprets this arrangement as deliberate isolation, an assessment Itachi says the clan elders also shared 116.

According to Itachi’s account, the Third Hokage ordered him to eliminate the Uchiha after their planned rebellion became known, then infiltrate Akatsuki. Itachi’s conditions included allowing the dead into the martyrs’ resting place and guaranteeing Sasuke’s safety. The public account instead identified Itachi as a traitor who massacred his clan 116 233.

After the massacre, the Third Hokage assigned the Anbu to handle the remains and reclaimed most of the clan’s estate for village development. Sasuke retained the ancestral home, inherited wealth, and received a large commercial property. Hiruzen rejected Danzo’s attempt to appropriate the fortune, citing Sasuke’s legal ownership 2 3.

Konoha Destruction Plan

Sasuke’s warning allowed Konoha to prepare for Orochimaru’s attack during the Chunin Exams. Evacuations began during the preliminaries, defenders waited around the walls, and Jiraiya supplied a summoning scroll for Gama Hiro 33.

When Sound and Sand forces invaded, Konoha ambushed them at the walls and inside the arena. Gama Hiro destroyed the attackers’ three-headed snake, while Kakashi and Might Guy fought the infiltrators. Jiraiya also joined the Third Hokage against Orochimaru. The destruction plan failed, and Hiruzen decided to retire after the battle 34.

Tsunade subsequently took office as Fifth Hokage in a public inauguration at the Hokage Building 39.

Conflict with Root

Danzo sent operatives to arrest Sasuke during his training journey despite having supported his departure. Tsunade challenged the action as an abuse of authority: Sasuke was not Danzo’s subordinate, and Danzo had no right to command every ninja in Konoha 79.

After further attacks on Sasuke, Tsunade increased Anbu surveillance of Danzo. His agents nevertheless continued supplying foreign ninja with Sasuke’s movements. She later weakened Root by assigning missions to its personnel and restoring experienced allies to influential positions; the retired Third Hokage withdrew from the dispute 89 101.

Pain’s Invasion

Konoha initially countered the Six Paths of Pain with intelligence-led deployments. Tsunade, Hiruzen, and Jiraiya assigned elite teams to individual Paths, while Anbu delayed the Heavenly Dao. Several Paths were quickly defeated or captured, and Katsuyu distributed Tsunade’s medical support across the village 215 216.

The Heavenly Dao then used Almighty Push from the village center, destroying Konoha’s buildings. Tsunade expended her chakra protecting residents through Katsuyu and was left unconscious. Nagato ultimately revived the dead after Naruto persuaded him to reject revenge, but the village still required reconstruction from scratch 217 220 226.

Sasuke remained outside the village preparing reconstruction plans. He later stated that he had located Nagato and would have intervened if Naruto failed 215 223.

Leadership Crisis and Reconstruction

Tsunade’s incapacitation, Jiraiya’s injuries, and Hiruzen’s age created a succession crisis. Danzo proposed himself as Sixth Hokage, while Shikaku recommended Kakashi. Sasuke and Itachi interrupted the meeting and attacked Danzo, beginning the public confrontation over his stolen Sharingan and role in the Uchiha tragedy 220.

Following Danzo’s execution, the Daimyo appointed Kakashi Acting Hokage until Tsunade recovered. Itachi’s wanted status was revoked, and Kakashi confirmed his return as an Elite Jonin. Sasuke recommended incorporating Root personnel into the Anbu to secure their records and prevent disorder 224 225 226.

The Land of Fire funded reconstruction, while allied countries supplied workers and materials. Residents participated in cleanup, and Konoha continued accepting missions during recovery. Kakashi prioritized the Hokage Tower, academy, hospital, and Barrier Team 228.

Fourth Great Ninja War

Kakashi represented Konoha at the Five Kage Summit while Tsunade recovered. He defended Itachi’s status as a former village spy and refused to surrender him to the Raikage. Konoha subsequently joined the Allied Shinobi Forces against Akatsuki 230 232 236.

War preparations included recalling deployed ninja, canceling missions, investigating enemy bases, and planning weapons production. Disturbed graves alerted the leadership to Kabuto’s possible use of Impure World Reincarnation. Anko’s reconnaissance team located the enemy headquarters in the northern Land of Frost 238 239 240.

Konoha contributed both frontline fighters and senior planners. Sasuke became Deputy Chief of Staff, while Shikaku and Shikamaru’s battlefield planning earned Darui’s praise 256.

When Sasuke delayed the sealing of the Ten-Tails without authorization, Tsunade explicitly stated that he was not acting with Konoha’s approval. She nevertheless reaffirmed the village’s commitment to the alliance 288.

Unification and Postwar Konoha

At the Five Elements Conference, Sasuke proposed unifying the Five Great Nations and their ninja organizations. His proposed system assigned border defense to an ordinary army and internal security to ninja, with the Uchiha remaining in Konoha as a deterrent rather than participating in elections or routine security work 268 337.

Ten years after the war, the nations had become the Five Elements United Nations. Konoha housed the headquarters of the Allied Security and Surveillance Bureau, commonly called the Police Force; the other four villages became branch offices and training bases. Naruto served as both Hokage and Director-General 339.

Konoha’s reconstruction was complete by this point. Kabuto established an orphanage for children gathered from the former villages, supported by state funding and income from Sasuke’s nationwide restaurant business 339.

Naruto’s Uncertain-Reality Sequence

Later chapters depict Naruto experiencing another childhood in Konoha while retaining memories of a previous life. He suspects a connection to the Nine Revolutions Reincarnation Technique, prayer beads, or genjutsu; these suspicions are not presented as a settled explanation 304 309.

In this sequence, Baki exposes Orochimaru’s impersonation of the Fourth Kazekage before the destruction plan unfolds. Konoha and the Sand ninja secretly cooperate against the Sound forces, while Naruto attacks Orochimaru inside the exam arena 321.

Following Kirigakure’s attack on Sasuke, Tsunade demanded administrative authority, established a military base, and redirected local taxes to Konoha. The base formed a maritime defensive line against the Land of Water 68 97 101.
Sunagakure / Land of Wind Participated in the initial destruction plan, but the Land of Wind and Land of Fire later became relatively reliable allies 33 82.
Kirigakure Its attempt to seize Sasuke’s sword inside the Land of Fire prompted Konoha to mobilize at the border and threaten war 97.
