Background / History
Kakashi is the son of Sakumo Hatake and a former student of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze. His teammates under Minato were Obito Uchiha and Rin. Obito was believed dead, while Rin’s death became the subject of a painful confrontation between Kakashi and Obito during the Fourth Great Ninja War 220 268 273.
Kakashi inherited Obito’s left Sharingan despite not belonging to the Uchiha clan. Sasuke identifies its spatial ability as the more offensive counterpart to Obito’s remaining right eye 19 66.
His father’s downfall left a lasting mark on him. Jiraiya believes that the White Fang incident and dependence on Obito’s Sharingan restricted Kakashi’s development. Sasuke also points to Kakashi’s abandonment of the Hatake family’s sword techniques as a consequence of that loss 221 227.
Appearance
- Left Sharingan: Usually concealed beneath his forehead protector; he raises the protector when preparing to use it in battle 19 150 308.
- Three-Tomoe pattern: Explicitly displayed during Team 7’s post-training assessment 150.
- Resemblance to his father: Chiyo initially mistakes him for the White Fang and attacks him 159.
Personality
Kakashi combines a casual manner with serious responsibility for his students. He habitually arrives late and initially reads Make-Out Paradise while testing Team 7, but returns promptly to protect them during the Chunin Exams. In the Land of Waves, he refuses to surrender the person under his protection and promises to defend his students even at the cost of his life 14 19 20 28 149.
He is an observant, adaptable instructor. His early assessment distinguishes Sakura’s fixation on Sasuke, Naruto’s energy and simple-mindedness, and Sasuke’s unreadable intentions. Later, he recognizes their individual improvements and uses Sasuke’s mastery of chakra nature transformation to encourage Naruto to train 12 23 163.
His composure is less secure when his past is involved. Learning that Obito survived leaves him stunned and vulnerable to White Zetsu’s ambush. Nevertheless, he turns his release into a counterattack, and later intervenes to protect Obito from Black Zetsu despite Obito’s actions during the war 273 276 288.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
- Observation and copying: Copies Zabuza’s Water Clone Technique during their mist-shrouded battle. His accumulated repertoire is described as a thousand copied techniques 20 94.
- Three-Tomoe use: Employs it openly when fighting the reunited Team 7 seriously 150.
- Mangekyo Sharingan: Possesses it but withholds it during the Team 7 assessment and the initial struggle against Kakuzu 152 195.
- Transplant limitations: Sasuke’s analysis states that Kakashi cannot advance the transplanted eye to Four-Tomoe because he is not an Uchiha. The account emphasizes how remarkable his frequent use remains 123.
- Stamina burden: Sharingan use contributes to the strain of prolonged combat; he is exhausted after escaping Sasuke’s Nine Dragon Maze Formation 154.
Kamui
- Spatial attack: The ability associated with Obito’s inherited left eye can sever part of a target’s body and draw it into another dimension 66.
- Distinct from Obito’s version: Kakashi’s eye is characterized as more offensive, whereas Obito’s right eye emphasizes intangibility and transporting people or objects 66.
- Terminology: Sasuke calls the offensive application “Kamui! Rupture” when distinguishing the uses of his own version. The supplied passage does not establish that Kakashi uses this name 67.
Lightning Release
- Chidori and Raikiri: Teaches both techniques to Sasuke during the month before the Chunin Exam finals 30.
- Finishing and breakthrough attacks: Uses Lightning Cutter to shatter Sasori’s Hiruko puppet, pierce Kakuzu’s heart, and kill White Zetsu after escaping captivity 167 193 276.
- High-output limit: Raikiri breaks through Sasuke’s Nine Dragon Maze Formation, but leaves Kakashi exhausted 154.
- Against multiple hearts: Piercing Kakuzu’s heart does not secure a kill because one of Kakuzu’s masked creatures restores him 193.
Ninjutsu Repertoire
| Technique / Field | Documented use |
|---|---|
| Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique | Blocks Sasuke’s attack to create an opportunity to disengage in the forest 153. |
| Water Clone Technique | Copies Zabuza’s technique during combat 20. |
| Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique | Counters Sasuke during Team 7’s assessment 151. |
| Water Formation Wall | Shields himself from Sasuke’s Fire Rasengan before retreating into the forest 152. |
| Earth Style: Earth Wall Jutsu | Uses a defensive countermeasure against Sasuke’s attacks 151. |
| Rasengan | Teaches Sasuke the technique and later attempts to use a collision between Rasengans to force separation 30 152. |
| Chakra nature instruction | Tests Naruto’s and Sasuke’s chakra natures; later receives orders to teach Naruto nature transformation 29 156. |
Taijutsu and Combat Tactics
- Close-combat skill: Spars with Sasuke’s unfamiliar Xingyiquan and Tai Chi while holding back. The account identifies ninjutsu as his greater strength and places his taijutsu below Might Guy’s 30.
- Terrain selection: Retreats into the forest during the reunion assessment to restrict Team 7’s coordination and exploit his superior experience 152.
- Rapid countermeasures: Uses underground movement, defensive ninjutsu, and disengagement to avoid being trapped by Sasuke’s attacks 150 151 152.
- Tactical limitations: Kakuzu’s direct assault overwhelms him in close combat despite his extensive knowledge of ninjutsu 194.
Leadership and Instruction
- Student assessment: Evaluates prospective genin and reports their performance to the Hokage 12 23.
- Delegation: Appoints Yamato as Team 7’s acting captain in his absence and explains Yamato’s role in suppressing Naruto’s Nine-Tails chakra during training 171.
- Battlefield caution: Splits allied forces near the Three-Tails and delays intervention because its erratic attacks could cause friendly casualties 182.
- Civil administration: As acting Hokage, oversees reconstruction and prioritizes the Hokage’s office and administrative buildings 228.
