Background

Kakuzu is a long-lived rogue ninja associated with Takigakure. He states that everyone from his era in the village is already dead, allowing him to operate there without being recognized; he also takes care to act only when targets are isolated. 125

By the time of his introduction, he is a regular at underground exchanges, where he turns in targets for cash and openly disregards the exchange's no-fighting rule by claiming that he merely killed a man rather than fought him. 86

Kakuzu discovers three bounty posters on Yuezuki Danna worth a combined 50 million ryo and immediately pursues the target. 86 His assassination attempt becomes a direct confrontation after he witnesses Danna's explosive-tag drop-pod test and recognizes that Danna is surrounded by masked elite ninja. 88

Danna's group defeats and disarms him. Rather than kill him, Danna purchases Earth Grudge Fear's cultivation method for 50 million ryo, then commissions Kakuzu to capture the Seven-Tails and obtain Iwagakure's Ultra-Light-Weight Rock Technique. 89

Seven-Tails and Technique Contracts

Kakuzu delivers the poisoned, unconscious Seven-Tails' jinchūriki to Danna after tracking the target's movements and isolating him. 125

His search for the Ultra-Light-Weight Rock Technique initially fails because even captured Iwagakure jōnin do not know it. Border Raid

During the Cloud-Lightning Federation's conflict with the Anti-Cloud Alliance, Kakuzu joins the Bandit Group in scouting a Sunagakure camp of more than thirty enemies. The group leaves him behind, prompting him to panic until Danna's support arrives in the form of Minato, Nagato, and Konan. 347

The reinforcements defeat the camp and capture Firelight. Kakuzu provides intelligence that Firelight received direct instruction from Onoki and may know the Ultra-Light-Weight Rock Technique's cultivation method, though the captive ultimately admits he has only learned the Super Weighted Rock Jutsu. 347
