Background / History
The White Snake Sage is a native creature born before the chakra system and one of the ancient beings who understood the cultivation of pure Nature Energy. Following the devastation caused by Kaguya Ōtsutsuki and Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, she, Sage Katsuyu, and the Great Toad Sage established great arrays in surviving lands to gather Nature Energy. These arrays became the Three Great Sage Regions. 271
Ryūchi Cave's doctrine is that strength determines status. The White Snake Sage offers Sage Mode only to those who survive the trials of the Three Divine Princesses; her method is to bite a candidate’s neck and inject Nature Energy directly into them. Survivors gain the foundation to use Nature Energy and continue Senjutsu training. 269
Her own long-term objective is Dragon Transformation. Ryūchi Cave’s accumulated Nature Energy is indispensable to that pursuit; losing the cave or exhausting its reserves would end a goal she has pursued for thousands of years. 271
Appearance
The White Snake Sage commonly appears as an elderly, haggard woman in white robes, smoking a pipe while lazily coiled on a high seat. 270
- Her true form is a colossal serpent covered in white scales. 270
- She possesses two prominent horns, giving her a dragon-like appearance. 270
- Her transformation is compared to a Jiao Dragon, rather than an ordinary snake. 270
Personality
Though initially languid and amused by the suffering of Ryūchi Cave’s trial-takers, the White Snake Sage is observant and cautious. She refused to dismiss Manda’s warning about Uchiha Hanma entirely, but initially trusted the cave’s rules and expected to judge Hanma through the standard trials. 269
When Hanma’s nature and threat became clear, she acted pragmatically rather than recklessly. She defended Ryūchi Cave with its stored Nature Energy, but chose compromise once continued combat threatened the cave’s destruction and her path toward Dragon Transformation. 270 271
Abilities & Skills
Senjutsu and Nature Energy Manipulation
The White Snake Sage possesses Senjutsu Chakra approaching the Nine-Tails in sheer magnitude; its quality is stated to exceed ordinary Tailed Beast chakra. 270
- Uses Ryūchi Cave’s great formation to gather the secret realm’s Nature Energy into herself for a temporary peak output. 270
- Outcompeted Hanma in an initial contest for Ryūchi Cave’s Nature Energy. 270
- Her power is greatly amplified within Ryūchi Cave, where she can draw on Nature Energy accumulated over a millennium. 270 271
- Sustaining this output rapidly drains Ryūchi Cave’s reserves, making prolonged battle strategically unfavorable. 271
Senpō: Inorganic Reincarnation
The White Snake Sage can use Senpō: Inorganic Reincarnation to animate and command the surrounding terrain. 270
- Causes the ground to lunge and attack as though alive. 270
- Can repeatedly mobilize more earth after previous waves are shattered. 270
- Reduced Ryūchi Cave’s great hall to a bottomless pit during her clash with Hanma. 270
Dragon Transformation
Her true serpent form reflects her progress toward Dragon Transformation. 270
- Transforms from an elderly humanoid appearance into a massive horned white serpent. 270
- Uses the Nature Energy stored by Ryūchi Cave to support this state. 270 271
- Her true body is considered weaker than a Six Paths-enhanced Naruto, despite the immense environmental advantage of her Sage Region. 270
Ryūchi Cave Senjutsu Trials
The White Snake Sage governs the process by which outsiders may seek Ryūchi Cave’s Sage Mode. 269
- Entrants must survive the trials administered by the Three Divine Princesses. 269
- Successful candidates receive a bite to the neck and a direct infusion of Nature Energy. 269
- Those unable to withstand the infusion do not survive. 269
Relationships
- Uchiha Hanma — Initially confronted him as an intruder after he devoured Tagitsuhime and terrified Ryūchi Cave’s inhabitants. She fought him for control of the cave’s Nature Energy, then exchanged cultivation knowledge and ancient history with him after he gained the upper hand. 269 270 271
- Manda — A Ryūchi Cave snake who fears Hanma enough to warn her repeatedly. Manda implies that she has never particularly liked him. 147 269
- Orochimaru — His summoning connection to Ryūchi Cave led to Hanma being described as a traveler introduced by Orochimaru. Orochimaru also regards himself as an inheritor of Ryūchi Cave’s legacy. 147 156 270
- Ichikishimahime, Tagitsuhime, and Toyotamahime — The Three Divine Princesses who administer Ryūchi Cave’s trials and ordinarily speak on the Sage’s behalf. 269 270
Story Role / Major Arcs
Ryūchi Cave Encounter
When Hanma arrived at Ryūchi Cave, the White Snake Sage watched him through a crystal ball and allowed the Three Divine Princesses to test him according to the cave’s rules. Unable to sense chakra or Nature Energy from him, she initially perceived him as an ordinary but physically sturdy man. 269
After Hanma devoured Tagitsuhime and his Fear Hell affected the other snake maidens, the White Snake Sage used Senjutsu-infused smoke to calm them and prepared to confront him herself. She recognized his devouring nature as resembling the legendary Heavenly Demon described in stories passed down by her great-grandfather. 269
Battle and Agreement with Hanma
The White Snake Sage prepared Ryūchi Cave’s formation, competed with Hanma for Nature Energy, and transformed into her horned white-serpent form. Using Senpō: Inorganic Reincarnation, she made the terrain itself attack him. 270
Although she could resist Hanma by spending Ryūchi Cave’s accumulated power, she could not deal him effective damage and risked collapsing the secret realm through continued expenditure. She therefore surrendered her insights into Nature Energy cultivation, the origins of the Three Great Sage Regions, and secrets of the primordial Shinobi World. 271
Trivia
- Ryūchi Cave’s great array concentrates Nature Energy from the surrounding world; the Sage Region is therefore both the White Snake Sage’s territory and the basis of her cultivation. 271
- She deliberately withheld or altered certain details when sharing ancient information with Hanma. 271
- Hanma regarded her as the most suitable source for studying Nature Energy cultivation because Mount Myōboku was hostile to him and Sage Katsuyu relied more on innate ability than a comparable cultivation method. 270
