Background / History
Several months before Hanma’s involvement, Orochimaru discovered the Jashin Cult operating in the Land of Hot Water. Captured peripheral members displayed apparent immortality, exceptional stamina, and physical strength comparable to Special Jonin, but Orochimaru’s dissections could not identify the source of their power. Hanma subsequently asked Orochimaru to monitor the cult. 183
Hanma later made locating the cult one of his objectives while operating in Kirigakure. Orochimaru identified the Land of Hot Water as the cult’s stronghold and noted its members’ unusually strange aura. 203
Feimei led Hanma to the cult’s headquarters: a black-and-white pyramid surrounded by decayed bodies, bones, and blood-soaked earth. There, the high priest and the believers attempted to use Hanma as the subject of a ritual intended to summon Jashin’s favor. 209
Hanma redirected the ritual onto the high priest, forcing the cultists’ blood, bodies, and spiritual energy into him. The priest survived by absorbing the remaining believers’ flesh and emerged as Jashin’s spokesperson with an enhanced body, immortality, and the ability known as Jashin’s Curse: Blood Possession. 210
After using the priest to investigate the curse’s mechanics, Hanma destroyed him and the ritual array. His Entry, Unified Origin, absorbed Jashin’s power and evolved into Soul Devouring Rakshasa, ending the cult’s immediate operations. 211 212 When Ōtsutsuki Isshiki later investigated the site, it had become ruins retaining only traces of Jashin’s aura. 216
Doctrine and Practices
The cult’s core promises were resurrection, immortality, slaughter, and worship of Jashin. Its followers included people seeking eternal life, the return of deceased loved ones, power to indulge violent desires, or those who had simply been indoctrinated. 210
The cult regarded suffering and violent death as offerings. A successful spokesperson was expected to “purify” living beings through killing, gather their suffering into their soul, and offer it to Jashin. 210
Ritual Requirements
- Believers cut themselves and use their blood to form a large ritual pattern around the intended recipient. 209
- The blood pattern draws down Jashin’s spiritual power, which reconstructs the recipient’s flesh and grants extraordinary traits. 210
- The candidate must possess an exceptionally robust body; weaker flesh may fail under the ritual’s pressure. 210
- The high priest had spent more than a decade preparing a ritual intended to resurrect his wife. 210
- Hanma’s interference caused the ritual to incorporate the flesh and souls of numerous cultists, producing a spokesperson stronger than the priest would normally have become. 210
Headquarters
The cult’s base was a large black-and-white pyramid in a dense forest in the Land of Hot Water. Its design bore the same eerie pattern worn on Feimei’s necklace. 209
- The grounds were covered in rotting corpses, scattered bones, and deeply blood-stained soil. 209
- The headquarters served as the site of the cult’s mass blood ritual. 209 210
- Following the destruction of the priest and ritual array, the location became abandoned ruins. 212 216
Abilities and Ritual Effects
Enhanced Bodies
Cult members appeared to possess bodies with abnormal endurance, strength, and longevity.
- Peripheral members demonstrated stamina and physical strength on the level of Special Jonin. 183
- The priest retained a healthy complexion and overwhelming vitality despite severe self-inflicted blood loss. 210
- Jashin’s ritual could remake a recipient’s flesh into a stronger body if it endured the process. 210
Pseudo-Immortality
The cult’s “immortal body” was not true physical invulnerability. Jashin anchored an avatar’s soul to its damaged body through spiritual threads, preventing the soul from dissipating even after bodily destruction. 213
- The resulting body could remain conscious after being reduced to flesh and fragments. 212 213
- This immortality depended on Jashin’s continuing power rather than the avatar’s own body. 213
- Once Jashin withdrew his support, the priest’s flesh collapsed and lost its humanoid form. 213
Jashin’s Curse: Blood Possession
The priest activated this curse after receiving Hanma’s blood and entering the cult’s ritual pattern. 210
- The user’s self-inflicted injuries were transferred to the blood donor at a distance. 211
- The curse bypassed Hanma’s extraordinary physical defenses, allowing the priest’s self-mutilation to inflict pain directly on Hanma. 211
- Its operation involved gray-white spiritual threads linking the priest and target. 211 212
- Hanma’s evolved Soul Devouring Rakshasa did not inherit this specific ability. 212
Jashin
Jashin was an active, soul-related entity rather than merely an abstract god created by the cult. After Hanma destroyed the priest, Jashin manifested through the remains and identified himself as the being worshipped by the cult. 212
Jashin offered Hanma power and immortality in return for souls gathered through slaughter. He described his lineage as feeding on the pain absorbed from souls to strengthen the soul’s origin. 213
- Jashin’s home planet had been destroyed by the Ōtsutsuki Clan. 213
- He feared Ōtsutsuki patrol squads and reacted with hostility when Hanma claimed to be Ōtsutsuki Isshiki. 213
- He used avatars and rituals to spread his power on other worlds after losing his own planet. 213
- His two descents into the Shinobi World alerted several powerful entities, including Isshiki. 213 216
