Background
Dead Apostles are a non-human vampire race and longstanding enemies of the Holy Church. Their conflict with the Church dates to the Church’s founding, while Dead Apostle outbreaks have repeatedly forced the Church and Mage’s Association into temporary cooperation despite their own hostility. 328 377
Their origins are tied to Crimson Moon and the Moon King’s authority. Shiki theorizes that both Dead Apostles and True Ancestors are contaminated products of Crimson Moon, with Dead Apostles representing a race “without a future”; this remains his assessment rather than confirmed fact. 354
The race is politically fragmented. Progenitors cooperate when necessary, but generally lack friendship or trust and pursue individual goals such as survival, power, prophecy, revenge, or research. 371 389 450
Characteristics
- Dead Apostles possess abnormal physical strength, speed, senses, magical energy, and regenerative capacity. 328 354
- Their strength is amplified at night, which they regard as their domain. 328 449
- They consume blood not only to survive but to replenish Blood Reserves, the resource used to restore their bodies and activate supernatural abilities. 329 446
- Some Dead Apostles turn humans into lesser vampires, undead, or mindless Ghouls. 365 442
- High-ranking Dead Apostles can remain active after catastrophic bodily destruction so long as they retain sufficient Blood Reserves and restoration capability. 330 445
- Their blood may transmit vampiric corruption; exposure to Rita Roseian’s spilled Blood Reserves transformed civilians into low-ranking Dead Apostles. 454
- Sunlight is dangerous to lower ranks, while Knight-class and higher Dead Apostles show greater resistance. 354 361
Abilities & Skills
Blood Reserves and Restoration Curses
Blood Reserves sustain Dead Apostles and fuel their Restoration Curses, allowing rapid regeneration from injuries that would kill humans.
- Greater Dead Apostles can regenerate lost limbs and restore severe bodily damage through stored blood. 330 337
- High-ranking Dead Apostles may survive dismemberment by abandoning damaged flesh and blood before regenerating elsewhere. 445
- Once Blood Reserves are exhausted, a Dead Apostle loses access to its Origin Curse and becomes far easier to destroy. 446
- Restoration is powerful but not true invulnerability; specialized conceptual weapons, soul-targeting attacks, and overwhelming attrition can permanently kill them. 364 444
Origin Curse
An Origin Curse is a soul-bound manifestation of the path a Greater Dead Apostle has taken in pursuit of eternity. It appears as a blue-violet vortex within the soul. 341 404
- Only Dead Apostles who reach the seventh rank can develop an Origin Curse. 404
- Its power reflects the individual’s chosen path, talent, and accumulated development rather than a standardized ability. 328 329
- Origin Curses can enable powers such as plunder, environmental control, familiar creation, bloody flames, or destructive sonic attacks. 329 445 449 450
- A seventh-rank Origin Curse can pollute the land and spiritual veins. 350 404
- Destroying or extracting the Curse cripples the Dead Apostle’s body, mind, soul, and path to power. 341
Principle Blood Rings
Progenitors possess soul-engraved Principles and Blood Rings, often collectively called Principle Blood Rings or Crowns. 354 404
- A Principle is the foundation of a Progenitor’s power and can command a specific form of authority. 354 404
- The Blood Ring is connected to Crimson Moon’s authority rather than being the original source of a Dead Apostle’s power. 404
- Kromclay’s Principle, City Is Kingdom, turned Geneva into his territory, empowered Dead Apostles within its barrier, and allowed him to manipulate surrounding terrain and structures. 442 445
- Removing a Progenitor’s Principle Blood Ring severs its authority and can reduce the Progenitor to ash. 459
Familiars, Servants, and Transformations
Dead Apostles can create or command lesser vampires, undead servants, and Familiars.
- Vampire offspring and servants may be deployed as expendable forces or blood-gatherers. 328 360
- Some high-ranking Dead Apostles create combat Familiars from Blood Reserves, including wolves, cheetahs, and bears. 449
- Absorbing Mage Beast Familiars can grant hybrid transformations, though the process carries severe bloodline-conflict risks. 330
- Daes Troia absorbed a Dragon-kind Mage Beast Familiar and developed dragon scales, wings, a tail, and enhanced combat ability. 330
Weaknesses
- Blood depletion — Regeneration and Origin Curses depend on Blood Reserves; prolonged combat or cursed wounds can force a Dead Apostle to expend its reserves. 444 446
- Conceptual weapons — Black Keys and other specialized anti-Dead Apostle armaments can bypass ordinary durability and restoration. 329 444
- Soul and Origin Curse destruction — Attacks targeting the mind, soul, or Origin Curse can kill a Dead Apostle more decisively than bodily damage. 341 445
- Holy and solar power — Excalibur’s holy radiance and Shiki’s sunlight-based Mystic Eye attacks are exceptionally destructive against Dead Apostles. 446 453
- Sunlight — Lower-ranked Dead Apostles are harmed by sunlight; higher ranks possess greater resistance but are not established as completely immune. 354 361
- The Gastric World Scripture — The Holy Church’s weapon can invoke El Nahat’s instant-kill Principle against Progenitors. 389
Relationships
- Holy Church — Mortal enemy; its Executors, Inquisition Knights, and Graveyard Agency specialize in hunting Dead Apostles and Progenitors. 328 364
- Mage’s Association — Historical enemy and occasional temporary ally of the Holy Church during major Dead Apostle crises. 88 377
- Graveyard Agency — An independent Church organization focused on eliminating Dead Apostle Progenitors; its prior campaign against Gransurg Blackmore ended in severe losses. 368 439
- True Ancestors — Higher-ranked beings connected to Crimson Moon; True Ancestors are placed above Progenitors in the ten-rank hierarchy. 354
- Crimson Moon / Moon King — Source of the authority linked to Progenitor Blood Rings and central to Dead Apostle power structures. 404 459
- White-Winged Duke, Trhvmn Ortenrosse — Publicly acknowledged King of the Dead Apostles, though Altrouge Brunestud rejects his legitimacy and claims to be the race’s true ruler. 370 371
- Altrouge Brunestud — Black Princess who seeks to rule all Dead Apostles and eliminate rival factions. 370 388
Story Role / Major Arcs
Hawaii and Tokyo Incidents
A Dead Apostle slaughtered more than two hundred villagers in Hawaii before apparently departing toward America, Japan, or Indonesia. The Church suspected that the threat had reached Japan, prompting Sister Yuika’s investigation in Misaki City. 311
Count Dies, later identified as Daes Troia, arrived in Tokyo and fought the Holy Church’s Einsatz in Yoyogi Park. His dragon-like transformation and Restoration Curse overwhelmed the Church force, causing extensive casualties. 328 330 331
Misaki City Hunt
Vivie Rose, a sixth-rank Dead Apostle subordinate to Rita Roseian, hid in Misaki City while feeding on members of the criminal underworld and attempting to control Shiki through bloodline-linked lesser Dead Apostles. 360
Shiki, Arisu, Yuika, and Ria cornered Vivie inside an unfinished shopping center to prevent civilian casualties. After her defeat, Vivie disclosed her history, her connection to Urameshi, and the White-Winged Duke’s interest in Shiki before choosing to die in sunlight. 361 365
Geneva War
The White-Winged Duke gathered multiple Progenitors in Geneva in response to a prophecy that a human boy would threaten his life. Their alliance included Van-Fem, Kromkrey Petaschek, Roa, Rita Roseian, and Water Demon Smee. 371 389
Kromkrey transformed Geneva into a Dead Apostle domain with a thirty-kilometer barrier, corrupted ley lines, poisonous air, and an army of Dead Apostles and undead. 442 444
Shiki, Ria, and Justitia fought through Knights, Nobles, heirs, Ancestor clones, and Familiars. Their attacks demonstrated that even high-ranking Dead Apostles could be defeated by exhausting Blood Reserves or preventing restoration. 444 445 446
Kromkrey became the first major Ancestor eliminated in the war after Shiki extracted and sealed his Principle Blood Ring, causing the collapse of Geneva’s barrier and communication network. 459 454
Trivia
- Dead Apostles are described by Taigong Wang as “Earth’s cancer.” 354
- A Dead Apostle’s pursuit of immortality does not remove its fear of death; many still beg for mercy or avoid exposing their true bodies in battle. 341 445 448
- Daes Troia was nominally seventh-rank but had surpassed the normal limits of a Noble and was believed capable of contending with some eighth-rank Progenitor heirs. 354
