Background / History

Lancelot identifies himself as the foremost knight of the Round Table, yet understands that Heroic Spirits are copies of legends rather than the original dead: “shadows” that neither truly lived nor died. He cannot remember his childhood, recalling only that he became a Knight of the Round Table at some point. He considers himself specifically a fragment of the Lancelot legend shaped after his affair with the queen. 9 11

After becoming Hōraisan Shiki's Servant in the Fourth Holy Grail War, Lancelot accepts Shiki's respect for his existence and choices. The two establish a new contract through mutual oaths: Lancelot pledges to act as Shiki's blade, while Shiki promises to wield his power cautiously and honor Lancelot's trust. 9

His encounter with Saber, Artoria Pendragon, renews his old loyalty to his king. He fights beside her against Caster's Sea Monster and helps restore her confidence, but after the battle declares that he is now Shiki's knight. Artoria temporarily dismisses him from the Round Table so that they may later fight each other without restraint. 13 14 18

Lancelot defeats Lancer after a prolonged battle at the Spirit Core Limit, salutes him in respect, and escorts Kaineth and Sola from Japan on Shiki's orders. He later struggles against Rider's Reality Marble before surrendering so that Shiki can enact his own plan. 24 45 46

His final Holy Grail War battle is a full-power duel with Saber. Although his Noble Phantasm is shattered by Excalibur, the battle lets him reject resentment and surpass his status as a predetermined historical record. 52 53 54

As the Azure Knight, Lancelot later appears on Shiki's path to the Root. Though assigned to stop him, he refuses to fight his former Master and allows Shiki and Justitia to proceed. 57

In the Holy Capital, Lancelot is summoned again by the altered King of Knights. He leads Purification Knights, secretly establishes a refuge for civilians, and waits for an opportunity to save his King. Shiki's arrival restores his hope, and Lancelot renews his loyalty to him. 170 172 173

Appearance

Lancelot's appearance changes with his manifestation, but he consistently presents himself as an imposing European knight with a refined, melancholic demeanor.

Personality

Lancelot is deeply loyal, disciplined, and respectful of knightly ritual. He values martial skill highly and considers himself unmatched among the Round Table in combat. Even while manifested as Berserker, he remains capable of pragmatic strategy, including proposing an alliance with Rider and accepting that a knight may need to endure humiliation for a greater goal. 11

Shiki's refusal to let his companions be humiliated earns Lancelot's respect. From then on, Lancelot treats his Master as a partner rather than merely a source of orders, though he remains unwaveringly obedient when Shiki commands him. 9 11 24

He carries lasting regret over his betrayal and the deaths caused during Camelot's fall. This remorse makes him reluctant to kill fellow Knights of the Round Table, even opponents such as Gawain and Agravain. He instead wishes for the restored King to judge their conflicting loyalties. 264 268
