Background & History

Hong Yun received the final strand of Primordial Purple Qi from Dao Ancestor Hongjun at Purple Cloud Palace. Though he considered gain and loss matters of fortune and fate, he openly celebrated the unexpected opportunity, unaware that it drew the covetous hatred of Kunpeng and other great powers. Zhen Yuanzi alone immediately worried for his safety. 33

Despite possessing no major backer, Hong Yun continued wandering the Primordial World. While observing the conflict involving the Demon Race, he met Chen Ku and quickly invited him to travel to the Taiyin Star for Moon Laurel Wine. Their journey instead drew them into Xihe and Changxi’s crisis, where Hong Yun assisted Chen Ku in opposing the schemes of Yue Lao, the Cold Toad, and the Howling Moon Ancestor. 142 148 150

At Mount Sumeru, Hong Yun participated in a Dao discussion with Chen Ku, Jie Yin, Zhun Ti, and Zhen Yuanzi. He severed his Evil Corpse, becoming a Two-Corpse Quasi-Sage, and later witnessed Zhen Yuanzi test the divine ability Universe in a Sleeve on him. 156

The Demon Court later exploited Hong Yun’s trusting nature by inviting him to celebrate the birth of Di Jun’s ten Golden Crow sons. Ignoring Zhen Yuanzi’s warnings, Hong Yun attended and was separated from his friend by the Hetu Luoshu before Kunpeng attacked him for the Primordial Purple Qi. He was badly wounded, but refused to surrender the qi and burned his essence blood to keep fighting. 206 208 214

Chen Ku intervened against the Demon Court and carried Hong Yun through the battlefield, while Zhen Yuanzi fought to reach him. After the Demon Court withdrew, Hong Yun was ashamed that his carelessness had endangered both Chen Ku and Zhen Yuanzi. 214 216 218

Moved by Chen Ku’s protection and the guidance of Jie Yin and Zhun Ti, Hong Yun joined the Western Buddhist Sect. Chen Ku gave him the Shepherd Immortal Staff, while Jie Yin and Zhun Ti respectively granted the Tai Xu Divine Armor and Four Symbols Pagoda. 219

To establish his Dao, Hong Yun pursued Merit through acts that benefited the Human Race. He taught the use of cooked meat, prompting Suirenshi’s enlightenment; later enlightened Ziyishi to make clothing and Youchaoshi to construct dwellings. Hong Yun created the Buddha Script—named Sanskrit by Chen Ku—which was recognized by the Heavenly Dao and brought him further Merit. He then purified resentment and ferried wronged souls in the Sea of Blood, an act that inspired Houtu’s enlightenment toward establishing reincarnation. Hong Yun protected her during her realization, then blamed himself when she transformed herself into the cycle of reincarnation. 260 263

Repeated failed attempts at Sainthood and the mockery of other cultivators eventually forced Hong Yun to abandon his former hesitation. His determination caused the Primordial Purple Qi to resonate with his Dao foundation; with Chen Ku’s final assistance, he successfully attained Sainthood. 273 274

Hong Yun is renowned as the Primordial World’s “number one good guy.” He believes in treating others kindly, readily trusts new acquaintances, and considers many beings his friends despite Zhen Yuanzi being his only clearly dependable companion. 142

His generosity is paired with a dangerous lack of caution. He dismisses warnings about the Demon Court because he believes he has never wronged anyone, leaving him vulnerable to manipulation and ambush. 206

After Kunpeng’s attack, Hong Yun becomes more self-aware and remorseful, recognizing that his naïveté endangered those who helped him. Repeated failure to achieve Sainthood and public ridicule eventually transform his gentleness into a fierce determination to prove his Dao. 217 218 273
