Nagai Kei was still shaken, gasping for breath. It took him several seconds to make sense of the situation.
He voiced his first question.
"Wh-who are you?"
Sato looked at him with a smile, as though he were looking at his former self.
"I'm Sato, an Ajin just like you."
Suddenly, Sato's smile vanished. He swiftly drew his gun, murderous intent bursting forth.
Nagai Kei was instantly terrified, but all he could do was raise his arms in a gesture of defense that was more symbolic than practical.
Bang!
A gunshot rang out.
Nagai was unharmed.
Only then did he realize that a guard who had chased after them from outside had been killed instantly by Sato's shot.
Remembering that killing intent from moments ago, along with Sato's unchanging expression as he took a life, the joy Nagai felt at being rescued immediately faded somewhat, replaced by worry and a faint sense of resistance.
As he sat up from the operating table, Nagai Kei was stunned by the sight outside in the next instant!
As far as the eye could see, bodies lay scattered everywhere. White A4 sheets were strewn messily across the floor, dotted with scarlet stains.
Most were researchers wearing green sterile surgical gowns, while the rest were clerks responsible for recording data.
"Roughly speaking, there are probably over twenty dead. But the number of times they killed you must have been far greater than that, right?"
Nagai Kei had no answer.
"They should try putting themselves in our shoes. Everything this country says to the public is a lie."
"They claim the government is protecting Ajin, but it's all just a sham."
"That's right. They never saw us Ajin as human beings. And there's only one way to change that."
Nagai Kei looked up at him.
"What way?"
Sato's compelling voice rang beside his ear.
"Fight with me!"
While speaking with Nagai, Sato had already replaced his magazine and readied his weapons.
Raising his submachine gun, he strode out of the operating room and aimed at the researchers nearby, who had yet to escape.
Rat-a-tat-tat!
Rat-a-tat-tat!
Muzzle flashes erupted. Before him, the ordinary researchers could only become lambs awaiting slaughter.
In the end, only three remained. They collapsed to the floor in despair, gazing at Sato with pleading eyes.
Sato did not rush to shoot them, because Nagai Kei had changed clothes and was coming out of the operating room.
"Nagai, I saved three for you."
"Huh?"
Nagai had only just stepped out and had yet to process what was happening when something cold was forcibly shoved into his arms.
A gun!
A weapon created for no purpose other than killing!
"They brought you endless pain, so you have the right to kill them."
"The right to kill?"
Nagai Kei raised the gun and looked at the three researchers who had participated in dissecting him.
At this moment, they no longer possessed that aloof, indifferent demeanor from before. Their eyes held only despair and helplessness.
They kept begging through tears, spouting nonsense like, "Please don't kill us."
Yet that very nonsense still touched Nagai's heart!
Perhaps because he did not want to become someone like them, Nagai lowered his gun.
"Sorry, I can't do it."
Sato was somewhat surprised. "Why?"
"Killing them would only bring back painful memories. There's no benefit in it for me."
Sato was taken aback for a moment, then let out a scornful laugh.
"I see. You really are something special."
As he spoke, he drew the pistol from his waist.
Bang!
Without hesitation, he killed one of the researchers with a single shot.
The deafening gunshot made Nagai jump.
The sight of a living human dying right before his eyes jolted his nerves even more.
"Why?"
This time, it was Nagai's turn to ask.
And Sato gave his answer.
"Unlike you, I rather enjoy killing people."
As he spoke, he raised his pistol, intending to kill the remaining two as well.
But at that critical moment, an unexpected change suddenly occurred!
Rat-a-tat-tat!
The submachine gun in Nagai Kei's hands suddenly opened fire, hitting Sato directly.
The recoil knocked Nagai Kei to the ground as well.
Everyone was stunned by the sudden turn of events, including the two surviving researchers.
Only Bai Xing, clinging like a gecko to a concealed corner of the wall, had a faint gleam of excitement in his eyes.
"Hehe, it's starting!"
At such close range and completely unprepared, even with Nagai's terrible marksmanship, Sato was struck by several bullets, blood streaming from his wounds.
He had not died immediately, however.
His bloodshot eyes stared fixedly ahead.
"Nagai."
Nagai Kei hurriedly said, "Sorry, the gun just went off. But you're an Ajin, so you should be fine, right?"
How could Sato possibly believe such a childish excuse?
He let out a cold laugh as blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
"You really are beyond saving."
Under Nagai Kei's gaze, his eyes turned icy.
Sato raised his pistol as though pronouncing Nagai Kei's fate.
"I'm going to kill you."
—Bang!
But in the next moment, he fired at his own temple.
His body went limp as he fell to the ground, but in truth, he was accelerating his body's recovery.
If he simply left things alone, he would not only have to endure the pain of bullets passing through his body, but would probably have to wait a while before dying.
Since he could revive after death anyway, at crucial moments, death became a tool for an Ajin.
A means of resetting the body's negative conditions!
Black, hazy particles emerged from Sato's body.
Nagai Kei instantly understood what was about to happen and shouted, "Run!"
The two surviving researchers also unleashed every ounce of their potential, following Nagai as they fled desperately outside.
The three hid in the warehouse area, but Sato had already caught up from behind.
"Playing hide-and-seek? Interesting.
"Nagai, you should understand, shouldn't you? How insignificant, ignorant, and meaningless human beings are. Those people who experimented on you probably went home to families they loved, right? So even though they knew the test subjects were Ajin, they were reluctant to perform the experiments at first. But that guilt soon disappeared. Once they heard it was for humanity's evolution, their hearts went numb. Just how fragile is the human heart?"
Hidden in the darkness, the three enjoyed a brief moment of safety. Hearing Sato's words, they looked at one another.
The atmosphere instantly became somewhat awkward.
Nagai Kei said in a low voice, "Although I haven't forgotten what you did to me, we need to find a way out first! You have to give something up to gain something in return. I'll be the bait—you take the chance to run!"
A pair of mocking eyes watched the three of them from the darkness above.
Using himself as bait for the people who had experimented on him—Bai Xing could not help wanting to applaud him.
As expected of the Strongest Saint in History. He really did not disappoint.
Nagai Kei had one of the researchers chop off his hand and place it beside a shelf as bait.
He himself quietly circled around to the rear.
Sure enough, Sato arrived shortly afterward.
But Nagai had still underestimated him too much.
Battle-hardened Sato saw through the childish trick at a glance.
When Nagai Kei appeared to launch a sneak attack, Sato countered with a slash that pierced straight through his kidney.
Next, Nagai Kei was completely suppressed by Sato, and wounds quickly began to accumulate across his body.
The only thing he could be thankful for was that the two researchers had taken the opportunity to escape.
Gripping the knife in his hand, Nagai Kei raised his eyes to Sato, then placed it against his own neck.
Squelch!
As his carotid artery and windpipe were sliced open, Nagai Kei immediately fell into death.
A complicated expression appeared on Sato's face.
The fact that he had overcome his fear of pain so quickly, cutting off his own hand to use as bait, was no longer enough to surprise him.
But overcoming his fear of death so quickly and using death to reset his negative condition was enough to astonish him!
Nagai Kei was undoubtedly a promising prospect, but unfortunately, he had chosen the wrong path!
At that moment, Sato's resolve to kill him became even firmer!
