Background / History

Sato was the first Ajin discovered in the Island Nation and was designated Subject 001. He spent twenty years imprisoned in a laboratory, subjected to experiments and sold to private companies as a renewable source of profit. After escaping, he had no name or place in society until a girl gave him the name “Sato.” 3 37 66

His experience in captivity shaped his hatred of humanity and the institutions that exploit Ajin. While he publicly frames his actions as a struggle for Ajin survival and autonomy, his own stated priorities are revenge against humanity and treating the world as a game he intends to clear. 26 37 80

Before gaining Magnetic Force, Sato rescued Tanaka Kouji from the research institute and kept him at his side. Three years later, he returned with Tanaka to rescue Nagai Kei, declaring war on Tozaki Yuu and the institute. 4

Personality

Sato is calm, calculating, and theatrically confident. He warns opponents before major operations, not merely out of arrogance, but because he enjoys turning conflict into a game with rules, anticipation, and increasingly difficult “stages.” 36 47 80

He is ruthlessly pragmatic in combat, readily amputating his own limbs or killing himself to reset injuries and tranquilizer effects. He treats death as a tactical inconvenience rather than a deterrent. 4 46

Despite his cruelty, Sato possesses exceptional curiosity and adaptability. Defeat by Bai Xing does not discourage him; he treats every loss as an opportunity to study, refine his techniques, and challenge the “final boss” again. 55 60 65 78

Appearance

Sato is a tall man with a distinctive peaked cap and a habitual faint smile. He is often described with half-lidded eyes and a relaxed expression even in violent situations. 4 43 60

  • Tall, imposing build. 20
  • Usually wears a peaked cap. 60
  • Often dresses in a white shirt, tan trousers, and brown leather shoes. 43
  • Has half-lidded eyes and a smirking or faintly smiling expression. 4 26

Abilities & Skills

Ajin Physiology

Sato is immortal in the Ajin sense: fatal damage triggers resurrection and restores his body from the largest remaining portion.

  • Regenerates severed limbs and clears physical impairments after death. 4
  • Uses self-inflicted death to remove tranquilizer effects or combat damage. 4 46
  • Has additional resurrection anchors through organs transplanted around the world, making permanent elimination extremely difficult. 49 60
  • Can still be subdued through tranquilizers, sealing, or the loss of access to Magnetic Force. 7 67

Magnetic Force

Sato gains Magnetic Force connected to Bai Xing and rapidly develops it into a high-output combat system.

  • Manipulates metal, including forming a hovering metal disc to survive a fall. 22
  • Suspends and controls incoming bullets. 22
  • Channels electricity through punches, overwhelming even insulated SAT troops. 23
  • Uses electromagnetic interference to broadcast a summons to every electronic device in Tokyo. 50
  • Reaches at least 200,000 volts during the Tokyo Tower conflict. 46

Little Black and Torrent Phenomenon

Sato can summon Little Black and later force the far more dangerous Torrent Phenomenon.

  • Summons Little Black as a combat asset. 37
  • Actively triggers a swarm of hundreds of Little Blacks, with limited control. 31
  • Initially sustains Torrent for less than ten seconds before exhaustion. 31
  • Later masters activating Torrent at will, using it to overwhelm Nagai and breach the Crisis Management Center. 37

Desperate Self-Sacrifice Fist

A high-power strike that sacrifices Sato’s own body for destructive output.

  • The backlash can shatter much of his own body, but Ajin regeneration lets him reset the damage. 46 55
  • Its Bullet Speed variant exceeds ordinary bullet speed. 55
  • He uses it immediately after regaining his power to repel Nagai. 77

Great Unity of Heaven and Earth

A technique developed after Sato studies nature and Magnetic Field Rotation.

  • Draws upon the planetary magnetic field to enhance his power. 66 78
  • Shares incoming damage with the surrounding magnetic field, making attacks lose force before reaching him. 66 78
  • Its full potential remains unrealized; he can currently affect only an area centered around himself. 66

Heavenly Powers

Sato applies Magnetic Force through elemental expressions.

  • Water, Ice, Earth, and Fire — used against Bai Xing for restraint and offense. 66
  • Heavenly Power: Ice — freezes Nagai’s diamond-hard Hell Burial Blade: Ten Thousand Thorns. 79

Martial Arts and Tactical Skill

Sato is an unusually gifted close-quarters fighter and strategist.

  • His precision gunfire and tactical knife work allow him to cut through institute security alone. 4
  • He favors direct, high-speed fistfights against other Magnetic Force users. 37
  • Develops the Ruyi Four-Limb Divine Art after improving his martial arts through battles with Bai Xing. 67
  • Plans operations through misdirection, public threats, hostage pressure, and backup contingencies. 26 47 82

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Submachine gun. 4
  • Tactical knife. 4
  • Video camera used to recruit Ajin allies. 18
  • Firearms, grenades, ten M4 carbines, and fifty magazines supplied to his group. 18
  • AJVX special nerve gas stolen from FORGE Company. 44

Relationships

  • Tanaka Kouji — Longtime subordinate and companion whom Sato rescued from the institute three years before the Nagai rescue; Tanaka supports Sato’s operations and extraction. 4 31
  • Nagai Kei — Initially rescued by Sato, then becomes his principal opponent; Sato later recruits him for a tentative alliance against Bai Xing. 4 37 80
  • Tozaki Yuu — Institute director and major target of Sato’s revenge; Sato declares war on him and later kills him. 4 38
  • Bai Xing — Source-linked rival whom Sato views as the “final boss” of his game; their repeated battles drive Sato’s growth. 13 60 80
  • Shimomura Izumi — Opposes Sato after Tozaki’s death; Sato briefly shows concern for her safety after regaining his powers. 46 77
  • Upali — Yoga master whose resonance with nature leads Sato to pursue a deeper understanding of Magnetic Field Rotation. 60

Story Role / Major Arcs
