Background / History
Great Sword Sect recruiter
Zhang Qing first appears as a smiling Great Sword Sect cultivator receiving newly acquired cultivators. He immediately recognizes Lin Chang'an's third-layer cultivation and alchemy skill as valuable assets to the sect, while explaining that low-talent cultivators would face heavier duties and less cultivation time 6.
He helps oversee the transfer of cultivators to Qingshan Mountain Market after the discovery of the Purple Copper Spirit Mine. There, he assigns ordinary recruits to mining squads while leading alchemists and talisman masters into the market district for intensive production work 14 15.
Market operator and sect loyalist
At the market, Zhang Qing presents the sect's exploitative labor quotas as a temporary necessity and warns workers that their doubled resources depend on completing assigned tasks 15. He works closely with Elder Lu, supporting the plan to share profits from the Purple Copper Spirit Mine in order to bind other factions to the Great Sword Sect 16.
He also operates a private business selling bound cultivators as “human tickets.” When Lin Chang'an helps devise a more profitable sales method, the pair sell the entire batch in one day and split over seven hundred spirit stones in profit 25 28 31.
Alliance with Lin Chang'an
Zhang Qing becomes increasingly tied to Lin Chang'an after Lin gains Elder Lu's favor. He provides Lin with personnel, assigns Alchemist Wang to the burdensome Bigu Pill work, and promises that Wang can later be dealt with as Lin wishes 18 19.
Over time, their relationship develops from mutual profit into dependence. Zhang Qing supports Lin's administration of the market industries, raises spirit stones for him, vouches for his loans, and even takes Elder Lu's beating to ease the elder's anger toward Lin 40 116 121.
Failed breakthrough and decline
Desperate to reach late Qi Condensation, Zhang Qing joins Liu Yanran in funding Lin's refinement of breakthrough pills. He receives the superior pill, but his attempt fails and damages his vital energy 60 61 62.
The failure destroys his confidence and weakens his standing. Elder Lu appoints Lin Chang'an steward of the Patrol Prefecture, while Zhang Qing—unable to protect his former position—aligns with Li Han and Qi Feng and seizes the gray-market business he once operated with his fellow disciples 63 67.
Final years and death
In his final years, Zhang Qing remains involved with the sect and helps erase traces of the former Great Sword Sect. Before dying, he speaks frankly with Lu An about the sect's past, admits that he had once been exploited without realizing it, and urges the younger generation to let old grudges fade 227.
Appearance
Zhang Qing is initially described as a middle-aged cultivator who habitually wears a full smile. Years later, his face is weathered; Wang Youyun derisively calls him “Baldy Zhang” during their public feud 6 28 39.
- Usually presents himself with an ingratiating, friendly expression 6 15.
- Later appears visibly aged and worn by failed cultivation ambitions 39 63.
- Uses black night-roaming clothing and a mask during covert operations 41 77.
Personality
Zhang Qing combines outward cordiality with greed and opportunism. He speaks warmly to recruits and junior brothers, but is fully willing to enforce labor exploitation, profit from human trafficking, and manipulate sect resources for personal gain 15 25 32.
His strongest motivation is advancement. He envies Lin Chang'an's talent, covets a breakthrough pill, and is willing to gamble his accumulated wealth for a chance at late Qi Condensation 20 31 58. After failing, his ambition gives way to fear and self-preservation; he abandons former associates to secure his own position 63 67.
Despite this, Zhang Qing is capable of loyalty. He serves Elder Lu for many years, supports Lin when their interests align, and later acknowledges both his own past exploitation and the need to protect the sect as a home for its younger members 16 121 227.
