Background / History

Xiao is the mixed-blood son of Nanket Holsom, head of the Holsom Family, and an unnamed Earthling woman. His mother died twelve years before his diary entry; Xiao retains her surname as the only legacy she left him. He resents the Roam people's contempt for Earthlings and their failure to improve Mars despite their power. 11

Within the Holsom Family, Xiao is treated as an inferior illegitimate descendant. Nanket regards his mechanical work as disgraceful, dismisses him as weak beside his pure-blooded brothers, and repeatedly emphasizes that Xiao can never become a true core family member. 11

Nanket gives Xiao a final opportunity to gain family recognition: he must enter the temple for the Christo Fusion Ceremony in three months. The ceremony is feared for its high mortality rate and the possibility that failed participants become monsters. 11 12

Xiao's engine project depends on custom components he had ordered using his savings. When the Holy Unicorn Mercenary Group is attacked and loses the shipment, Xiao dismantles his nearly completed work rather than leave it unfinished. Unable to obtain replacement parts through the Roam hierarchy, he resolves to face the Christo Fusion Ceremony and directs intense hatred toward Gu Xiechen and the Holy Unicorn Mercenary Group. 12

He is socially withdrawn and treats his workshop as both refuge and confinement, having gone months without leaving it. The contempt of the Holsom household has made him distrustful of other Roam people, but he is gentle and affectionate with Lily, his only friend. 12

His ambition is focused on engineering rather than the spiritual power valued by his family. Losing the parts for his engine project leaves him furious, but he refuses to surrender the goal that could change his position in Roam society. 12
