Background / History

The present Divine Nine and Terrestrial Ten structure emerged within the last five hundred years. Its formation followed Mount Shu’s loss of the Demon Suppressing Pagoda, which caused the sect’s standing to decline and left the foremost position among human immortal sects open to competition. Penglai Upper Sect and the Heavenly Star Divine Sect were the principal contenders at the time. 81

A Divine Nine position is both an honor and a source of political power: it grants substantial influence in the Nine Provinces, access to high-level resources and privileges, and a leading role in the allocation of such resources. The framework governing the Divine Nine and Terrestrial Ten was jointly established by the Various Immortal Sects and the Imperial Court. 375

Divine artifacts are a central reason the Divine Nine retain their position. While the comparative strength of individual sects may change over generations, divine artifacts do not; an Eighth Realm expert wielding one can preserve a sect’s standing at the peak of the cultivation world. 128 600

Eight Divine Nine sects are distributed across the four regions, while Cloud Pinnacle Temple occupies its own elevated location in the clouds. 625 641

Authority and Responsibilities

Demon Decrees

The Nine Heavens Immortal Sects and human dynasties alone can grant decrees to demons living in human cities. A decree formally endorses the demon; the issuing authority accepts responsibility if that demon later causes trouble. 7

• Applicants are examined for their aura and intentions before a decree may be issued. 7
• Recognized demons must periodically report to the issuing sect and submit to its tracking and positioning techniques. 7
• The Terrestrial Ten do not possess decree-granting authority. 7

Heavenly Hearing Bell

The Heavenly Hearing Bell was established when the Divine Nine were first named. It is used only for crises affecting the entire human realm. 180

• A bell strike can be heard in all directions and summons the Divine Nine to convene. 180
• When the bell rang three times over the Calamity Ba threat, Mount Shu dispatched its Guardian Elder. 180
• Seven rings require the sect leaders of all Divine Nine Immortal Sects to gather. 180

Regional Mutual Aid

Following Tian Shu Pavilion’s destruction, the Divine Nine and Terrestrial Ten strengthened their connections to avoid being defeated individually. Nearby sects established rapid-response forces to reinforce one another during major attacks. 900

• Terrestrial Ten — the lower-ranked counterpart to the Divine Nine; its sects do not share the Nine Heavens’ decree authority or equivalent political standing. 7 375
• Yu Dynasty — shares governance of the cultivation-world structure; the Imperial Court and Various Immortal Sects jointly established the Divine Nine and Terrestrial Ten charter. 375
