Background / History

As a teenager, Di Nufeng was determined to become a famous heroine and repeatedly defied the Law Enforcement Elder’s efforts to keep her from descending Mount Shu. At fifteen, she forced the Sword Exchange Pavilion Elder to assign her missions after threatening to use her newly learned Samadhi Fire. Her early demon-slaying work was catastrophically indiscriminate: she burned Xu Family Village while hunting a weasel demon, threatened innocent inn guests during a theft investigation, and scalded hundreds of tourists while dealing with a water ghost. 903

Her cultivation path is body cultivation, centered on the Crimson Flame Divine Phoenix Dharma Body. Because this path depends on rare opportunities and cannot be directly passed down, Mount Shu initially did not permit her to take disciples. 17

Di Nufeng is the daughter of Mingde, the Burning Heavens Dao Lord and guardian of the Yu imperial clan. Mingde identified her at an Immortal Sect Assembly and wanted her to return to the clan as his successor, owing to her unusually pure Divine Fire Fate. She instead chose to remain at Mount Shu; her connection to the imperial guardian helped ease relations between Mount Shu and the Imperial Court. 422

By the time Chu Liang became her sole disciple on Silver Sword Peak, she had become notorious for her drinking, fighting, and refusal to respect authority. She nevertheless wagered her Phoenix Blood Jade against Wang Xuanling: if Silver Sword Peak won the Chief Disciple seat at the Shushan Summit, she would receive the Chief of All Peaks position. 2

Empress Feng is a tall, striking woman whose usual relaxed bearing contrasts sharply with the destructive presence she displays in battle. She is first seen sleeping in a disheveled black robe beside a massive wine gourd; later, she wears a black-lined, high-waisted red dress amid the ruins caused by her cultivation. 2 374

She drinks, reads picture books, sleeps, gambles, fights, and frequently treats rules as obstacles to be ignored. Her habit of solving problems through overwhelming force began in her youth and persists even after she becomes one of Mount Shu’s foremost experts. 374 903

Her recklessness does not make her foolish. Chu Liang eventually recognizes that she is a Mount Shu tyrant rather than an idiot: although she acts overbearing, he has never heard of her suffering a genuine loss. She can manipulate negotiations, exploit her reputation, and understand Mount Shu’s internal power dynamics. 154

Despite habitually taking the larger share of profits and teasing Chu Liang, she is protective of him.
