Background / History

Bufa Temple had stood for more than a thousand years by the time He Zhao encountered it in the past. Its main compound was built along the slope of a gray mountain in the Highland, with its lowest and highest buildings separated by less than thirty meters of elevation 512.

The temple was a leading force in the campaign that destroyed the Great Vehicle Cult and subdued the Great Vehicle Buddha. The Buddha was divided into seven parts—his head, heart, torso, and four limbs—and sealed separately, crippling both him and his cult 486 497. Bufa Temple later used the Great Vehicle Buddha's Left Arm to suppress Fierce Specters, but stopped relying on it after learning that its apparent “crash” effect only drained a specter temporarily; repeated use allowed the drained specters to recover and caused the scattered divine limbs to resonate 535.

Its hereditary Family Branches are deliberately kept secret. Their purpose is to preserve Bufa Temple's inheritance should the central temple ever be destroyed; the locations and identities of those branches are treated as a core secret 538.

Temple Grounds

The central complex is a layered group of temple buildings rather than an overwhelmingly large fortress. Its principal structure is the Lakang Qimo Great Hall 512.

• The hall measures roughly eighty meters east-to-west and eighty-five meters north-to-south, covering about 6,800 square meters 512.
• It stands approximately twenty-five meters tall, with four-meter-wide wall foundations and 108 massive round pillars 512.
• A large open skylight courtyard occupies its center 512.
• Its ocher-red walls incorporate red, yellow, and gray, colors associated with Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, and Vajrapani respectively 512.

Entry and advancement

Bufa Temple's disciples study the Five Treatises before choosing a primary cultivation direction. Ordinary young Shami must pass assessments to qualify for advanced methods, while Outstanding Disciples may choose more freely 517.

Three High Cultivation Methods

Bufa Temple's highest core methods are:

• Vajra Surge — Preserves life qi and supports extremely prolonged cultivation 521.
• Treasure Vase Qi — Can destroy the qi of humans, Specters, and gods; taint magical tools; and isolate humans, ghosts, and gods 521.
• Blazing Fire Meditation — A five-phase art: Smoke, Yang Flame, Firefly, Lamp Flame, and Cloudless Blue Sky 509.

When Vajra Surge, Treasure Vase Qi, and Blazing Fire Meditation are successfully fused, they form the Great Vajra Yogini Cultivation Method, which raises essence, qi, and spirit to a godlike level and grants an Undying body 546. The fusion method is passed orally from Seat Master to Seat Master, and no second keeper is intended to exist 521.

Dharma Seals and visualizations

Bufa Temple maintains a vast Dharma Seal tradition. Basic seals are named after Buddhist concepts, while stronger seals are named after Arhats, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas 525.

• Root Dharma Seal — Restricted to the Seat Master, senior leaders, Outstanding Disciples, and specially favored successors. It prevents a practitioner's soul and life energy from being drained by the beings they visualize, instead allowing those beings' power to feed back into the user 522.

• Immeasurable Dharma Seal — Temporarily borrows effectively limitless Dharma power from visualized Arhats, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas 526.

• Kapala Bowl — Bufa Temple's temple-guarding treasure, made from the skull of a Great Virtuous Arhat. It leads to a self-contained world without light, time, or death, containing only eternal silence 536.

• Great Vehicle Buddha's Left Arm — A divine relic once used to disable Fierce Specters by draining their power; repeated use risks their revival and resonance with the Buddha's other limbs 535.
