Background / History

Great Vehicle Buddha was gestated for thousands of years at Ghost Lake before being born as the Plateau Witch's Buddha's Son. Upon emerging, he declared the name Great Vehicle; the Possessing Ghoul subsequently endorsed the title Great Vehicle Buddha. His birth drew the voices of countless worshippers, heavenly lightning, and a thousand-li wave of desertification that left the surrounding land lifeless. He subdued the lightning with the Demon Subduing Pestle. 495

At some point, Bufa Temple and allied family branches destroyed the Great Vehicle Cult's main altar and dismembered the Buddha into seven parts: skull, torso, heart, left arm, right arm, left foot, and right foot. The scattered remains retained divine power and became objects of contention between the cult, Bufa Temple, and He Zhao. 497 539

Appearance

Great Vehicle Buddha first manifested as a naked infant before rapidly growing into a handsome young man with an imposing yet youthful appearance. Severe injuries frequently reduced him to a golden skeleton, often with golden flames burning in his eye sockets. 539 528

Great Vehicle Buddha initially presents himself as proud, domineering, and eager to establish a title equal to that of a Buddha or Bodhisattva. He is also petty and vindictive; after He Zhao insults him, he threatens to turn his enemy into a woman. 495

His repeated defeats expose a strong survival instinct. He burns his own vitality to escape the Iron Rod Monks, abandons confrontations he cannot win, and eventually becomes fearful of He Zhao's overwhelming strength. 510 548

Great Vehicle Buddha is born under heavenly lightning and immediately establishes his name. He confronts He Zhao, praises the latter's body, and attempts to seize him before He Zhao uses Rollback to escape. 495

Torture and Flight

He Zhao returns to take revenge, inflicting prolonged torture on the weakened Buddha. When two Iron Rod Monks mistake him for a demonic heretic, Great Vehicle Buddha is badly injured again and burns his vitality to flee with the Possessing Ghoul and Lake Spirit. 508 509 510

Connection to He Zhao

Through the Skull of the Great Vehicle Buddha, He Zhao maintains a soul-level connection to him. He Zhao's cultivation and repeated Rollbacks transfer accumulating pain to the Buddha, eventually driving him into a coma; the connection is later severed when the Substitute Ghoul is digested. 519 524

Dismemberment Exploitation

He Zhao captures and feeds Great Vehicle Buddha to the Gluttonous Ghoul, dissolves his divine bones to repair his own body, and harvests Life Qi from his skull and other remains. 528 530 531

After gathering every remaining part, He Zhao reassembles Great Vehicle Buddha's body as a consciousness-less vessel for the Mahakala Seven-Turn Heavenly God Diagram.
