Background
Tregear grew up alongside Ultraman Taro in his original timeline. They studied and adventured together before taking the Space Garrison examination; Taro passed, while Tregear was rejected because of the physical disadvantages associated with the Blue Tribe. He instead entered the Intergalactic Science and Technology Bureau under Ultraman Hikari. 298
His faith in the Land of Light began to erode after Hikari disappeared and re-emerged on Planet Abora as Hunter Knight Tsurugi, driven by vengeance against Bogar. Hikari's fall convinced Tregear that even revered Ultramen could turn their strength toward destructive ends. 298
When Tregear encounters Kai/Orb in a universe where the Land of Light has fallen, he openly questions whether Ultramen have any right to judge light, darkness, good, and evil. Orb urges him to seek answers from Hikari and Qi Ming rather than remain trapped in his doubts. 298
Appearance
Tregear is an azure-blue Ultraman. In human form, he uses the identity Kirizaki, appearing in pure white clothing with clearer, gentler eyes than the Dark Tregear incarnation. 307
- Blue giant form with a Color Timer on his chest. 307 452
- Human form: Kirizaki, dressed in white. 307 450
- His dark counterpart appears as a black giant and is visually associated with darker attire and energy. 475
Personality
White Tregear is highly intelligent, introspective, and prone to overthinking. His observations of Hikari and Belial's falls leave him pessimistic about the Land of Light's ideals, and he initially treats light and darkness as unstable, possibly meaningless categories. 298 308
Qi Ming's trust, Hikari's guidance, Homura's optimism, and repeated experience fighting beside the Defense Team gradually give Tregear confidence. He begins to value practical action over abstract despair, learning to protect others without demanding acknowledgment or praise. 321 333 453
Dark Tregear embodies the path White Tregear might have taken. He promotes “chaos,” manipulates fear and resentment, and repeatedly attempts to prove that kindness inevitably produces suffering. Unlike White Tregear, he treats conflict and corruption as proof of his worldview rather than problems to solve. 453 475 490
Abilities & Skills
Scientific Expertise
Tregear is a scientist from the Intergalactic Science and Technology Bureau whose technical knowledge remains central to his role.
- Uses a palm-mounted Scientific Analyzer to identify Melan Star as a trap planet designed to kill investigators. 322
- Creates a Chaos Virus Destruction Enzyme to counter the Chaos Virus. 368
- Develops an experimental amplification machine intended to enhance his beam output. 453 455
- Identifies a method to materialize and defeat a Space-Time Realm-generating monster by striking its energy with opposing power. 419
Close-Quarters Combat
Tregear initially lacks confidence in physical combat, but develops significantly through Qi Ming's instruction and extreme training.
- Learns to target horned monsters' horns, exploit openings, and use enemy anatomy as improvised weapons. 333
- Uses agility refined through training to evade the Tregear statue while rescuing civilians. 453
- Defeats the second-generation Alien Mefilas alone with hand strikes, sweeps, and a light-infused finishing blow. 404
- As Super Taro, employs techniques taught by Qi Ming, including the King Kong Mountain Sea Fist, Lightning Wind-Cut Kick, and Heaven-Shattering Palm. 455
Energy Attacks
- Torerashium Beam — Tregear's purple destructive beam; the statue on Ora Star can replicate it with a stronger dark crimson version. 453
- Torrela Ultimate Blast — Dark Tregear's strongest beam, a multicolored, lightning-like attack. It is powerful enough to threaten 999-meter Ultraman Max but cannot harm Glitza. 317 319 455
- Great Power — Dark Tregear's corruption technique, which stimulates darkness within a target and magnifies its dark power. He uses it to influence the Rainbow Serpent God. 475
Super Taro Fusion
With Qi Ming's support, White Tregear merges into Qi Ming's Taro transformation and controls the resulting Super Taro body.
- Gains access to Taro's immense energy reserves. 454
- Receives the power of the Ultra Six Brothers. 454
- Uses the Cosmic Miracle Ray against Dark Tregear, overcoming the Torrela Ultimate Blast through the combined support of Qi Ming, Taro's manifested consciousness, and the Ultra Brothers' power. 455
Equipment
- Scientific Analyzer — Palm-deployed analysis device. 322
- Victory Hyper Gun — Used by Kirizaki against Ora Star's church knights. 450
- Amplifier — Experimental machine designed to amplify Tregear's beam; its prototype is compatible only with his own energy. 453 455
Relationships
- Ultraman Taro — Childhood friend and Tregear's enduring ideal of a Warrior of Light. Tregear's admiration for Taro is complicated by insecurity over their differing strength and status. 298 452
- Qi Ming — Mentor, ally, and the person Tregear most wishes to emulate in practice. Qi Ming recruits him, trains him, entrusts him with missions, and helps him overcome Dark Tregear. 321 333 454
- Ultraman Hikari — Former superior in the Intergalactic Science and Technology Bureau. Hikari's transformation into Hunter Knight Tsurugi triggered Tregear's earliest doubts, but Hikari later advises him to find his own answers. 298 308
- Kai / Ultraman Orb — The first person in this universe to hear Tregear's doubts. Kai encourages him to meet Hikari and Qi Ming. 298
- Homura — A younger teammate whose sincere optimism affects Tregear deeply and helps him reconsider his own self-pity. 333
- Dark Tregear — His dark counterpart and ideological enemy. Dark Tregear tries to prove that White Tregear's compassion only creates further chaos. 453 455
- Gashin — A refugee race once saved by Tregear, though Dark Tregear later exploits their fear of humanity to incite conflict. 252 475
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival on Earth and the Land of Light Crisis
Tregear arrives at the TPC Sea Base from a parallel universe after Orb sends him to find Qi Ming. He reports that Belial stole the plasma core of the Land of Light, freezing the Space Garrison and leaving its survivors close to extinction. 307
After the immediate crisis, Qi Ming asks Tregear to remain nearby rather than return to the Land of Light. Qi Ming believes that Tregear's insecurity and excessive contemplation could otherwise lead him down Dark Tregear's path. 321
Growth as a Defense Team Ally
Qi Ming becomes Tregear's human host, allowing the pair to fight through Tregear's body without spending Star Gift. Qi Ming teaches him practical combat principles while Tregear experiences the strength of human–Ultra cooperation firsthand. 333
Tregear undergoes harsh special training alongside Homura and later gains confidence by defeating the second-generation Alien Mefilas alone, saving children afflicted by Mandala Sickness. 336 404
He also contributes scientific support during several crises, including the Chaos Virus outbreak, the Salome Alien invasion, the Sphere Black Hole investigation, and the Space-Time Realm incident. 368 375 379 419
Ora Star Trial
Tregear travels to Ora Star and finds a church exploiting the population in his name. The church extracts excessive harvest taxes, forces people into deadly mining labor, and uses Tregear's image to demand obedience. 450
He publicly reveals himself as the real Ultraman Tregear, denounces the Pope's use of his name, and declares that no “Tregear God” has ever blessed the planet. When the Tregear statue awakens and claims to be the true god, Tregear rejects its authority and identifies himself as “a warrior fighting for the freedom and happiness of life” and “a fighting scientist.” 452
Dark Tregear reveals that he created the idol and engineered the crisis to corrupt his white counterpart. White Tregear resists the argument that his past kindness makes him responsible for others' cruelty, rescues endangered believers, and refuses to fight for gratitude or recognition. 453
Defeat of Dark Tregear
Qi Ming helps Tregear destroy the idols and return the souls trapped within them. He then merges with Tregear and transforms into Taro, allowing Tregear to wield Super Taro and confront Dark Tregear directly. 454
Tregear defeats Dark Tregear with the Cosmic Miracle Ray, proving to himself that his bonds with Taro, Qi Ming, and the Ultra Brothers are stronger than the darkness his counterpart embraces. Dark Tregear is converted into six Star Gifts through the Ultraman Arbitrary Key, though he later revives. 455
Dark Tregear's Return
After reviving, Dark Tregear returns to Earth seeking revenge against Qi Ming. He awakens Gatanothor and other sealed threats, manipulates Carlos Kurosaki, pressures the Gashin toward anti-human violence, and corrupts the Rainbow Serpent God with Great Power. 474 475
When Qi Ming reveals Ultraman Trigger True Form—a stable union of light and darkness—Dark Tregear's worldview collapses. He nevertheless refuses to abandon chaos, choosing instead to destroy Qi Ming's “truth” through continued conflict. 488 490
