Background / History

Mamoru Shirogane serves as the Defense Team’s captain. After being injured in a fighter crash, he is rescued by Qi Ming; recognizing Qi Ming’s potential and concern for others, Mamoru offers him a temporary place on the team while helping him search for a way home 3.

His early leadership is marked by sincerity but limited diplomatic tact. He struggles to manage misunderstandings surrounding Qi Ming’s arrival and is explicitly noted to be poor at using “white lies” or flexibility to resolve conflicts between subordinates 3. Even so, he advocates evaluating Qi Ming through time and actions rather than appearances 5.

Mamoru consistently extends his responsibilities beyond battlefield command. He personally visits Akio, a boy convinced that he is an alien, and later seeks Qi Ming’s help in supporting him 21. He also insists that saving even one life is never “a wasted trip” 27.

During the Kendros and Bogar crisis, Mamoru uses Ultra Telekinesis to move an atomic bomb away from the TPC base despite the technique shortening his lifespan 59. He subsequently commits himself to reaching both Hikari, who is consumed by revenge, and Hiroya Fujimiya, who intends to eliminate humanity for Earth’s sake 60.

When he temporarily cannot transform, Mamoru remains active by organizing the Ultraman hosts, analyzing their battle footage, and offering training based on his experience 138. He later becomes a direct mentor to Makoto Aizen and Homura 156 335.

Mamoru is displaced to the Super-Ancient era thirty million years in the past, where he protects civilians, fights Dark Giants, and helps advance human technology over six months 424 436. Qi Ming eventually retrieves him through a Space-Time Vortex after the Dark Emperor’s defeat, returning him to the 21st century 445.

Personality

Mamoru is principled, compassionate, and firmly committed to protecting people regardless of their background. He attempts to see growth even in flawed individuals, opposing Qi Ming’s initial demand to remove the Second Team because he believes people may change 458.

His idealism often puts him at odds with Qi Ming’s more utilitarian decisions. Mamoru is deeply disturbed by Qi Ming’s erasure of Queen Amaterasu’s former personality, viewing it as morally comparable to death despite its practical benefits 252.

He is patient with younger or less experienced fighters. Rather than shaming Homura after a defeat, Mamoru tells him to take pride in having fought evil to the end and promises that those who came before him will face the strongest threats until he grows stronger 335.

Although stern in training and occasionally blunt, Mamoru can reflect on his own conduct. He refrains from reprimanding Makoto Aizen after the latter’s defeat because he recognizes that doing so would be counterproductive 174.
