Background / History

Wang Li is a direct descendant of Great Qin’s Wang military clan. His grandfather is Wang Jian and his father is Wang Ben; he was raised on military theory and participated to varying degrees in the Wang family’s campaigns against Chu, Wei, Yan, Dai, Zhao, and Qi. 495

Before arriving at Wokou Island, Wang Li believed organized armies could always overcome individual martial prowess. Su Chen’s single-handed pacification of the island overturns that conviction and prompts Wang Li to seek a relationship with him. 495

Personality

Wang Li is proud, forceful, and deeply conscious of military achievement. He initially dismisses Little Sage Village’s Confucian disciples and boasts that three hundred elite armored soldiers could flatten it, badly underestimating its martial strength. 496

He is fiercely attached to the Hundred Battles Armor Piercers, who are both his personal guards and longtime comrades. Their heavy losses provoke him to mobilize all imperial forces in Sanghai City against Ghost Valley Vertical and Horizontal and the Mohist remnants. 501 506

Although impulsive when enraged, Wang Li is politically adaptive. He stages his own injuries to blame the Net, participates in framing the Mohists for Zhang Han’s death, and ultimately abandons Hu Hai’s faction to pledge loyalty to Fusu when it becomes the more viable course. 501 512 576

Story Role / Major Arcs

Wokou Island Expedition

Wang Li leads the Hundred Battles Armor Piercers to Wokou Island and orders a massed arrow attack on Su Chen’s ship. When Su Chen stops the entire volley, Wang Li investigates Sun Wei and Tie Cui’s capture of Xu Fu, then learns that Su Chen has already pacified the island alone. 493 494

Shocked by Su Chen’s feat, Wang Li abandons the planned conquest, orders a return to the capital, and begins actively trying to befriend him. 495

Sanghai City and the Net Scheme

In Sanghai, Wang Li hosts Su Chen at a lavish banquet and attempts to recruit him for the Wang family. 498 After a Net assassin attack, he fabricates injuries to draw Su Chen into conflict with the Net and secure the martial artist’s dependence on the Wang family. 501

Following the deaths of Zhang Han and many Hundred Battles Armor Piercers, Wang Li works with Su Chen to frame Ghost Valley Vertical and Horizontal and the Mohist School for the incident. He then launches a sweeping operation against the Mohists in Sanghai. 506 512 520

Mohist Pursuit

Wang Li continues the pursuit even after the Mohists take refuge around Little Sage Village. He employs Su Chen, pressures the Confucian School, and seeks survivors for interrogation to locate Xu Fu. 520 552

After Su Chen kills Gai Nie and Wei Zhuang, Wang Li interrogates the captured Mohists and kills Master Ban when they refuse to reveal Xu Fu’s location. 554

Alliance with Fusu

When Fusu is poisoned, Wang Li initially responds with fury and prepares to attack Little Sage Village. He later asks Su Chen to investigate the true culprit, while worrying that his former connection to Zhao Gao and Hu Hai will be exposed. 567 575

At Su Chen’s urging, Wang Li confesses his support for Hu Hai and collusion with Zhao Gao to Fusu, then formally defects to Fusu’s side. Fusu accepts his allegiance, citing Wang Li’s service in saving him. 576

Marquis of Wucheng

For eliminating the Mohist remnants in Sanghai, Wang Li is enfeoffed by Ying Zheng as the Marquis of Wucheng, a distinction that places him ahead of his rival Meng Tian in status. 589
