Background / History

Mu Yang does not know his true origin. His recovered account begins with a long descent and a period as a consciousness embedded in a blade-like shard, unable to move or speak. His uncontrolled presence covered a barren mountain in snow until Fujin and Lingyuan found him. After gathering enough energy, he manifested a spirit form, drew his main body from the ground, and restored a physical body. 24 25 562

He lived in the Chasm alongside Fujin, Lingyuan, and the Medicine Master. His memories include peaceful gatherings with them, but also witnessing the Medicine Master being cut apart before him; the event left him with grief, anger, loneliness, and fragmented recollections. 1 30 102

At the beginning of the main narrative, Mu Yang uses a System to establish himself as a Cryo sword character. Its setting identifies him as a mysterious Chasm swordsman guarding a snow-covered sword pool, rumored to be an adeptal being with an unknown past. Popularity Points gained through his public exploits can be spent on wealth, simulations, and increases to his strength. 1 3 20

Repeated simulations eventually restore his corrected memories and clarify his identity. Even after recovering them, he remains guarded about the pain he has experienced and avoids making Lumine and his other friends worry. 170 199 328

Appearance

Mu Yang is a white-haired swordsman who commonly wears black clothing and carries a sword. His Cryo Vision hangs at his waist. 5 6

  • White hair and dark, wuxia-inspired attire. 5
  • Carries a sword, sometimes seen with a white scabbard. 5
  • Has a Cryo Vision worn at his waist. 6
  • Later gains a transformed outfit and a more overt dragon-like element during his battle with Raiden Ei. 152

Personality

Mu Yang is quiet, aloof, and deliberate. He often limits what he says to preserve his mysterious persona, yet he is capable of sharp humor and adapts quickly when circumstances require it. 3 20 666

His defining pursuit is the pinnacle of swordsmanship. He seeks powerful opponents and techniques—even challenging Raiden Ei to learn Engulfing Lightning—and will push himself beyond safe limits to protect others or perfect his art. 150 151 165

Despite his cold exterior, Mu Yang is considerate and protective. He avoids overshadowing Lumine's journey, watches over her from the sidelines, supports Shenhe's independence, and repeatedly places himself between civilians and catastrophic threats. 39 89 236 239

He also has a conspicuously generous and playful side. Mu Yang sponsors difficult but lavishly rewarded events, gives gifts freely, and is willing to prank old friends such as Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper. 81 177 604

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Mu Yang is an elite swordsman whose fighting style centers on speed, precision, Sword Intent, and overwhelming single-strike power.

  • Normal Attack — Cloud Terrace Three Falls: Performs up to three consecutive sword strikes. 1
  • Charged Attack: Consumes stamina for a circular slash; expending a stack of Sword Intent increases its damage. 1
  • Plunging Attack: Strikes the ground from mid-air for area damage. 1
  • Can project sword energy, split reinforced doors with a casual slash, and overwhelm ordinary Fatui personnel alone. 11
  • After injuring his right hand, he is forced to use left-handed swordsmanship against Bache. 239

Cryo Vision and Ice Arts

Mu Yang wields Cryo through both his Vision and his immortal techniques.

  • Elemental Skill — Azure Dragon Emerging from Water: A piercing Cryo dash that damages enemies along its path and grants a Cryo infusion for 12 seconds; its listed cooldown is eight seconds. 1
  • The skill can manifest as a massive ice dragon effect and freeze large groups of enemies. 18
  • Can create sacrificial ice clones through Golden Cicada Shedding its Shell to evade attacks. 152
  • Froze Bache's tsunami to protect Beidou's fleet. 239

Ultimate Sword Arts

Mu Yang possesses multiple high-level sword techniques whose use can reshape the battlefield.

  • Elemental Burst — Sword Treading Mountains and Rivers: Releases a high-speed forward sword energy attack with enough force to “shatter mountains and rivers.” 1
  • A Sword Without a Trace, Snow Covers the Mountain: His strongest documented sword art; it freezes the surroundings and can sever all five of Osial's heads in a single strike. 68 104
  • This ultimate has severe costs: against Osial, it leaves Mu Yang exhausted and unable to prevent the enemy's subsequent counterattack. 68 104

Form Manifestation and Immortal Physiology

Mu Yang can manifest and reshape his body through his connection to his sword-like main body.

  • Originally emerged as a spirit from a blade-like shard before regaining a solid body. 24
  • Can alter his appearance through Form Manifestation, including disguises used for stealth. 128
  • Has survived severe injuries and periods of slumber connected to the Sword Sinking Pool. 113 165
  • His physical condition can still deteriorate; injury to his dominant hand notably reduces his combat performance. 236 241

Domain of Ice Swords

Mu Yang can deploy a frozen Domain resembling Raiden Ei's One-Mind Pure Land in concept.

  • The Domain is a white world of ice, snowfall, and countless ice-crystal swords. 244
  • He can call individual blades into his hand with the command, “Swords, come!” 244
  • His mastery of the technique lets him suppress imitations of his own Domain and sword skills. 568

Heavenly Nail Power

Mu Yang has a special connection to the Heavenly Principles through Heavenly Nails.

  • He can absorb power from Heavenly Nails to strengthen himself. 260
  • His power has an unusual suppressive effect against Forbidden Knowledge and Abyssal corruption. 163 260
  • He can enhance weapons so ordinary defenders can harm Abyssal Hounds. 163
  • His later Natlan plan uses vine dolls and formations to redirect Abyssal corruption, with Mu Yang implied to bear the burden himself. 657 670

Dragon Form

During his battle against Raiden Ei, Mu Yang unlocks a new transformation associated with a dragon element.

  • Greatly increases his power during direct combat with an Archon. 152
  • Lets him match Ei closely enough for their battle to end in a draw. 152
  • Its dragon imagery becomes a recurring feature of his public image and combat effects. 152 154

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Wither and Flourish: Thousand Mountains Covering Snow — Sword drawn in his simulated memories and later offered as a five-star limited weapon. 1 651

Story Role / Major Arcs

Mondstadt and the Fatui Stronghold

Mu Yang arrives in Mondstadt claiming to be a dragon slayer. He draws the attention of Amber, Jean, and Kaeya, then independently infiltrates the Fatui stronghold in pursuit of the Lyre of Winds. He defeats its guards, retrieves the Lyre, and gives it to Lumine while concealing parts of his involvement. 3 11 12 13

During Mondstadt's Hilichurl assault, he invests all of his available Popularity Points, holds the main gate, freezes the enemy army, and pursues the Abyss Mage directing the attack. 18

Liyue Crisis and Osial

While trying to understand his missing memories and connection to Liyue's Immortals, Mu Yang guides Lumine toward Guili Plains and Mount Aocang without taking over her journey. 39 41

When Osial attacks Liyue Harbor, Mu Yang challenges the Lord of the Vortex alone. His ultimate strike removes all five heads and buys the time needed for the Jade Chamber plan, though he is badly injured by Osial's counterattack. 68 74

Sword Inquiry and Inazuma

Following his recovery, Mu Yang organizes the Yujing Terrace Sword Inquiry event to share his sword art and reward participants. Its trials are deliberately punishing, but the prizes include Mora, adeptal mechanisms, characters, and weapons. 81 88 96

In Inazuma, Mu Yang challenges renowned swordsmen before confronting Raiden Ei in the One-Mind Pure Land. He seeks to experience Engulfing Lightning, unlocks his dragon form, and earns Ei's respect after their draw. 135 151 152

Chasm Investigations

Mu Yang investigates the Chasm, discovers his connection to fragments of himself, and traces the source of his unusual power to Heavenly Nails. He eventually recovers significant strength through a Chasm crystal and reveals part of the truth to Lumine. 260 263 291

Sacrifice, Return, and Natlan

Mu Yang apparently sacrifices himself during the Chasm crisis. His funeral and Rite of Descension are held on Mingyuan Mountain, where his friends learn that he had also devised a plan to save Clarisse. 577

He later returns to Liyue and becomes involved in Natlan's conflict with the Abyss. His proposed solution uses vine dolls and a large-scale formation to redirect Natlan's corruption, but Lumine and Marivka suspect that Mu Yang intends to absorb the cost himself. 651 657 670
