History

Founding and the Archon War

Morax established Liyue alongside the immortals approximately 3,700 years before the modern era. The Geo Archon ruled it from its inception, while immortals and Yakshas bound themselves by contract to protect the land. 45 61 72

During the Archon War, flooding devastated Dihua Marsh and Guili Plains. Morax ordered the migration of Guili Assembly’s people to Liyue Harbor, while Mu Yang, Ganyu, Azhdaha, the Yakshas, and other immortals guarded the procession against threats from sea beasts and rival Archons. 105 106

Following the migration, Guili Assembly was incorporated into Liyue Harbor. Morax then established Liyue’s original Contract, promising protection, justice, compensation for the wronged, and punishment for those who broke their agreements. 106

“My only wish is to cleanse the four directions and protect this corner of the mortal world.” 106

The Geo Archon’s “Death” and Human Governance

For millennia, the annual Rite of Ascension allowed Rex Lapis to issue an oracle directing Liyue’s affairs for the following year. The Liyue Qixing handled the nation’s day-to-day administration beneath his rule. 34

Zhongli later orchestrated his own apparent death to test whether Liyue could endure without direct divine governance. The crisis drew the Qixing, adepti, Fatui, and Traveler into conflict before Osial threatened Liyue Harbor. 72

Mu Yang defended the harbor during Osial’s assault, ultimately severing all five of the Vortex Archon’s heads with a single sword strike and taking the force of the final attack. 74

After the crisis, the adepti chose to withdraw from direct political involvement. Liyue entered an era defined as the “Contract between Liyue and Humans,” with its people and the Qixing taking responsibility for the nation’s future. 70

Contracts and Commerce

Liyue identifies itself as the Nation of Contracts and places exceptional importance on commerce, trade, obligations, and formal agreements. Its merchant-led Qixing reflects this culture at the governmental level. 34

The port’s trade network extends beyond its borders. Yilong Port’s historic routes to Fontaine were approved through a former Rite of Ascension and remain central to the movement of tea, jade, iron ore, and grain. 347

Lantern Rite

Lantern Rite is one of Liyue’s major annual festivals, marked by reunions, lantern displays, food, public events, and commemorations of adepti. Each year has a designated theme; one later festival centers on kites and mechanical kite technology developed with Fontaine. 112 603

Following Mu Yang’s apparent death, Xiangling created the dish “Winter’s Warm Sun” in his memory, and Lantern Rite gatherings became an occasion for Liyue’s immortals and citizens to remember him. 605

Moonchase Festival

Moonchase originated from an adeptal ceremony known as “Chasing Moon.” Rex Lapis later unified several related festivals to honor a departed friend, establishing a celebration centered on reunion, remembrance, food, tea, and reflection on Liyue’s past and present. 188 200

The festival’s culinary traditions are tied to Makoshius, the Kitchen God. In ancient times, he guided Liyue’s people through disasters, taught them to build homes and light hearths, and aided the migration from Guili Village to Liyue Harbor. 197
