Background / History

Shenhe was born into a peaceful family in a village on Mt. Tianheng. Her mother died from illness when Shenhe was five, leaving her father consumed by grief. Seeking to revive his wife through the forbidden Life Borrowing ritual, he offered Shenhe as a sacrifice to a demon formed from Archon Remnants. Shenhe survived in the cave for several days with her mother's dagger before Cloud Retainer found her; her father later took his own life in remorse. 168 235

At six, Shenhe's survival and innate ferocity drew the attention of the Liyue Adepti. Moon Carver divined that she bore the fate of “Solitary Star and Calamity,” foretelling separation from loved ones and a life of hardship. Shenhe chose to remain on Mount Aocang and became Cloud Retainer's disciple rather than return to the mortal world. 167

Her talent for adeptal arts was extraordinary, but her escalating killing intent eventually endangered both herself and others. With Shenhe's consent, the Adepti performed the Red Rope Binding Soul ritual. The red rope restrained her bloodlust, but gradually dulled her emotions and connection to ordinary human desires. 168 169

Mu Yang became one of Shenhe's principal teachers and the Adept who most understood her. He supported her training, taught her practical skills such as cooking and tea ceremony, protected her when she revisited her abandoned home, and encouraged her to face rather than flee from her past. 166 167 169

After years of cultivation, Shenhe began entering Liyue Harbor at Mu Yang and Cloud Retainer's urging. Her work delivering Immortal Talismans for the Jade Chamber reconstruction, fighting alongside Lumine, and meeting ordinary people convinced her that she wanted to remain in the city. 236 237 242

Appearance

Shenhe's hair was originally black. During her formal apprenticeship ceremony, it changed through black-and-white frost patterns before becoming white as snow. 167

  • Snow-white hair.
  • A Cryo Vision.
  • Red ropes binding her fate and suppressing her killing intent.
  • An otherworldly bearing that often causes strangers to mistake her for an Immortal. 229 235

Personality

Shenhe was initially quiet, wary, and detached after the trauma of her childhood. The Red Rope Binding Soul deepened this distance, leaving praise and admiration difficult for her to accept; she associated being treated as an “Immortal” with being kept apart from other people. 169 229

Her thinking can be intensely literal. When faced with a competition for the Jade Chamber, her proposed strategy was to eliminate every competitor so her group would place first. She also imposed an ascetic diet of medicinal herbs on herself because she feared worldly delicacies would hinder her cultivation. 226

Despite her restraint, Shenhe is devoted to the people she accepts as her own. Her friendships with Lumine and Paimon, along with her desire to use her strength to protect others, gradually helped her reconnect with her emotions and choose life in Liyue Harbor. 231 235 242
