Background / History
Heliopolis and the Archangel
Before the war reaches Heliopolis, Kira assists Professor Kato with technical work and hopes Orb’s neutrality will keep it outside the conflict. He is reluctant to become involved in the fighting despite his concern over the war. 22
During ZAFT’s attack on Heliopolis, Kira follows Cagalli Yula Athha into the Gundam factory, reunites with his childhood friend Athrun Zala, and becomes the Strike Gundam’s pilot. He subsequently shields Thor and Cagalli from Rau Le Creuset’s Ginn by activating the Strike’s Phase Shift Armor. 23 24
Kira becomes a key combatant for the Archangel. Miriallia Haw serves as his MS and MA combat navigator, while Kira repeatedly sorties against ZAFT mobile suits despite being overwhelmed on several occasions. 30 32
His status as a Coordinator is exposed during the Artemis incident, resulting in his detention. He later returns to the Strike to battle the Blitz and Duel Gundams while Thor provides limited support from the Moebius Kai. 35 36
Desert Campaign
While operating with the Archangel in the desert, Kira reprograms the Strike Gundam’s OS for desert conditions during combat. The adjustment improves the unit’s mobility and allows him to intercept missiles and artillery fire threatening the Archangel. 91
Kira’s Seed Mode manifests in the desert campaign, allowing him to react to and destroy incoming missiles with extraordinary accuracy. However, his performance still depends heavily on the Strike’s energy reserves and battlefield support. 92 112
He clashes with Desert Dawn’s outlook after questioning the value of sacrifices made without sufficient strength. His bluntness provokes Cagalli, though the two later reconcile. 99 100 101
Reunions, Losses, and Freedom
Kira’s conflict with Athrun becomes increasingly personal because of their childhood friendship. He treasures the mechanical bird Dori, a gift Athrun made for him, and both struggle to separate after their reunion at Morgenroete. 127 282
During a duel with Athrun, Kira destroys an unmanned Buster Gundam while believing Nicol Amalfi is inside. The presumed death leaves him deeply distressed even as the Archangel’s mechanics celebrate his victory. 288 289
After surviving his later battle with Athrun, Kira is burdened by the people he has killed and the deaths he has witnessed. Lacus Clyne comforts him and guides him toward hope for reconciliation rather than despair. 306 317
Lacus eventually entrusts Kira with the Freedom Gundam, arguing that belief alone cannot end the war. Kira accepts the unit and returns to combat with the intention of protecting others and pursuing peace. 323
Orb and the Continuing War
After returning in a ZAFT red pilot suit, Kira clarifies that he belongs to neither the Earth Alliance nor ZAFT military. He is determined to protect both his mobile suit and the secrets surrounding it. 331
Kira refuses Athrun’s proposal that Orb accept ZAFT military assistance, believing either major alliance would merely change Orb’s enemies. He resolves to continue fighting for a future in which the war does not destroy both P.L.A.N.T. and the Earth Alliance. 361 362
He later works closely with Athrun against the Earth Alliance’s enhanced Gundams. Their synchronized Seed Mode combat lets them pressure the Raider and Calamity Gundams, though Kira’s stamina remains a limiting factor in prolonged engagements. 368 540
Personality
Kira dislikes fighting and initially wants a peaceful life away from the conflict. Nevertheless, he repeatedly accepts combat when he believes it is necessary to protect civilians, friends, or Orb. 22 24 364
He is compassionate toward enemies and allies alike, and the emotional cost of killing weighs heavily on him. His accidental destruction of the Buster Gundam and his belief that he had killed Nicol leave him visibly distressed rather than triumphant. 288 289 317
Kira is protective to the point of recklessness. He refuses to let Frey attempt to pilot a mobile suit, worries about Cagalli’s safety, and intervenes against Britannian soldiers massacring civilians even after learning they are nominal allies. 82 282 620
