Background / History

Heliopolis and the Archangel

Before the war reaches Heliopolis, Kira assists Professor Kato with technical work and hopes Orb’s neutrality will keep it outside the conflict. He is reluctant to become involved in the fighting despite his concern over the war. 22

During ZAFT’s attack on Heliopolis, Kira follows Cagalli Yula Athha into the Gundam factory, reunites with his childhood friend Athrun Zala, and becomes the Strike Gundam’s pilot. He subsequently shields Thor and Cagalli from Rau Le Creuset’s Ginn by activating the Strike’s Phase Shift Armor. 23 24

Kira becomes a key combatant for the Archangel. Miriallia Haw serves as his MS and MA combat navigator, while Kira repeatedly sorties against ZAFT mobile suits despite being overwhelmed on several occasions. 30 32

His status as a Coordinator is exposed during the Artemis incident, resulting in his detention. He later returns to the Strike to battle the Blitz and Duel Gundams while Thor provides limited support from the Moebius Kai. 35 36

Kira’s conflict with Athrun becomes increasingly personal because of their childhood friendship. He treasures the mechanical bird Dori, a gift Athrun made for him, and both struggle to separate after their reunion at Morgenroete. 127 282

During a duel with Athrun, Kira destroys an unmanned Buster Gundam while believing Nicol Amalfi is inside. The presumed death leaves him deeply distressed even as the Archangel’s mechanics celebrate his victory. 288 289
