Background and History

Childhood and ZAFT service

Athrun and Kira Yamato were childhood best friends. He personally built and gave Kira the mechanical bird Dori, which Kira considers one of his most treasured possessions. 127 282

During the Heliopolis incident, Athrun recognized Kira before attacking him, withdrew into the Aegis Gundam, and began the conflict that turned the two friends into opposing pilots. 23 As a ZAFT pilot, he operated the Aegis aggressively against the Archangel and its escort forces, including transforming into Mobile Armor mode to destroy an Earth Alliance escort ship. 31 44

Athrun was engaged to Lacus Clyne. When Kira returned Lacus to ZAFT custody, Athrun confirmed her identity, accepted her safely, and urged Kira to leave the Earth Alliance. 47 49

Conflict with Kira

Athrun's combat ability made him a persistent threat to the Archangel. He fought Thor during the Eighth Fleet landing operation, evading Thor's opening beam attacks and relentlessly pursuing him away from the fleet. 86 He also demonstrated close-quarters competence after being stranded on an island, disarming and subduing Cagalli before Thor intervened. 126

His rivalry with Kira became deeply personal after he believed Kira had killed Nicol Amalfi. Athrun entered a near-frenzied state, repeatedly accusing Kira during their Aegis-versus-Strike duel. 293 When the Aegis lost power, he initiated its self-destruct sequence and escaped; Kira also escaped moments before the detonation. 294

Afterward, Athrun believed he had killed both Kira and Thor. The realization left him grief-stricken, though he continued to describe Kira as his very good friend from childhood. 297

Break with ZAFT

Lacus later revealed that Kira had survived and challenged Athrun to examine whether he was fighting for his own convictions or simply following his father's orders. Her words caused him to lower his weapon rather than harm her. 333

When a ZAFT assassination team used Athrun to track Lacus, he protected her instead. After Lacus's allies eliminated the attackers, he took the Justice Gundam and departed for Earth to find Kira. 334

Athrun eventually reunited with Kira at Orb. Their conversation acknowledged the damage they had caused each other: Kira had killed Athrun's friend, while Athrun had once tried to kill Kira. Both expressed their wish to end the war, and Athrun chose to remain near Kira and help defend Orb. 359 362

His final break with ZAFT came after confronting his father, Patrick Zala, over the plan to end the war by eliminating all Naturals. Patrick had Athrun arrested as a traitor; Athrun resisted during transport and escaped with Dacosta's aid. 390

With Orb and the *Eternal*

Athrun stayed with Kira's group despite the consequences of fighting against ZAFT. He stated that he wanted “a peaceful and beautiful world,” even though he had not yet found all of the answers he sought. 378

He repeatedly acted as Kira's reinforcement during Orb's defensive battles. In the Justice Gundam, he drove back the Raider, Calamity, and Forbidden Gundams, then coordinated with Kira in Seed Mode against the same opponents. 367 368

When Kira and the Freedom Gundam were captured, Athrun fought desperately to reach him despite being pinned down by the Forbidden and Calamity Gundams. He later covered Thor's rescue of Kira and Frey, then withdrew with Thor after being ordered to retreat. 542 544 545

Athrun later accepted the existence of Chirala, a female Memorian counterpart genetically derived from him, and formed an easy rapport with her. 562 563

Later travels

After Thor restored his world-travel capability, Athrun traveled with Kira and the group into other worlds. In the Code Geass world, he used a Justice-based Nightmare Phantom Machine Armor alongside Kira and later synchronized with Kira in Seed Mode and Psycho-Frame Synchronization during their battle with Thor. 578 618 620

Personality

Athrun is intensely attached to Kira. Mentioning Kira immediately breaks through his guarded demeanor, and he is visibly distressed whenever he believes Kira is hurt, dead, or emotionally distant. 126 293 333

Initially, Athrun is dutiful and mission-focused, often placing military obligations ahead of his own feelings. However, repeated encounters with Kira, Lacus, civilians harmed by the war, and Patrick's extremism force him to question what he is fighting for. 129 333 347 389

He is capable of decisive violence in combat, but his later choices are driven by loyalty and conscience rather than factional obedience. He protects Lacus from ZAFT assassins, refuses to reveal the locations of the Justice and Freedom Gundams to Patrick, and stays with Orb despite being warned that this constitutes treason. 334 390 378
