Background / History

Heavenly Gate Sect and betrothal

Zhang Weiyun first met Xu Fan at age thirteen and believed from that moment that he was her destined husband. Xu Fan jokingly declared himself her husband and promised a betrothal gift; her father overheard and accepted him as a future son-in-law. Weiyun treated a Hello Kitty pendant Xu Fan had given her as their token of affection and invoked her village’s customs to insist that they were married for life. 6 66

She cultivated quickly enough to reach Qi Refining Level Four and selected the hill beside Xu Fan’s home. Although an elder identified her unusual Spirit Body and offered her entry to the Inner Sect, she refused in order to remain near Xu Fan. 12

Separation under Venerable Xuanqing

Venerable Xuanqing accepted Weiyun as a disciple. When she reunited with Xu Fan while he was still a Qi Refining cultivator, she proposed leaving with him immediately; Xu Fan instead urged her to continue cultivating. Before her departure, he placed a Wood Spirit Crystal ring on her hand and formally acknowledged her as his wife. 66

Xuanqing allowed Weiyun to visit Xu Fan for one month each year after reaching the Nascent Soul Stage, provided that her cultivation continued to satisfy her master. 66 After sixty years apart, Weiyun returned as a Nascent Soul Great Cultivator, brought the Cloud Flower Deer with her, and entered the Hidden Spirit Sect as Xu Fan’s wife. 121

Hidden Spirit Sect elder

Weiyun repeatedly supported Xu Fan’s sect with rare treasures. She gave tailored Magic Treasures to his disciples, including the Five Elements Dao Disk, Void Wind Spirit Robe, paired spirit swords, an Illusion Realm Dao Bead, and Stepping Wind Boots. 456 The Hidden Spirit Sect formally recognized her as Elder Weiyun, and she promised that disciples facing difficulties could seek her directly. 457

Wan Qing Island

As Venerable Xuanqing ascended, an Immortal Armored woman took Zhang Weiyun away as her ninth disciple despite Xu Fan’s resistance. 873 Weiyun later explained that her new master, a being above the Grand Unity Saint realm, would cultivate her to Golden Immortal or possibly Grand Unity in return for the eventual sacrifice of her Heavenly Fortune Spirit Body. She was the last of nine disciples with that physique. 875

Xu Fan later secured her freedom to remain with him by offering the Immortal Armored woman the Thirty-six Heavenly Fortune Spirit Star Great Array. Weiyun retained her status as the woman’s disciple and gained the freedom to enter and leave Wan Qing Island. 1136

Restoration of her cultivation

Weiyun made a hundred thousand wishes for Xu Fan to obtain a Supreme Divine Item. The resulting bargain stripped her cultivation and would have forced her to remain mortal until death, but Xu Fan discovered and removed the restrictive runes from her Chaos Divine Soul. Her cultivation was then restored and elevated to Chaos Great Saint. 1557

Appearance

As a young disciple, Zhang Weiyun was described as a bright-eyed, white-toothed girl in a beige floral skirt. In later years, she appeared in green robes while riding the Xuan Green Divine Bird. 6 221

Weiyun is intensely steadfast in love. She refused to accept Xu Fan’s claim that their betrothal was a joke, pursued him across sect grounds, and remained devoted even after becoming the disciple of powerful masters. 6 66 875 She can also be emotionally forceful: when Xu Fan initially tried to reject her arrival at the neighboring hill, she cried for hours until he agreed to honor the betrothal. 12 13

Her affection extends to Xu Fan’s disciples and to her own senior and junior sisters. She freely distributes rare resources, values her sisters’ freedom from Wan Qing Island’s formation, and was reluctant to part from them. 456 1168 She is protective of her marriage and has shown jealousy when Xu Fan’s circumstances suggested other women might approach him. 1258
