Background / History

The Speed Force is a uniquely powerful force associated with DC Universe speedsters, most notably Barry Allen. It grants speed beyond ordinary physical limits and can be pushed beyond light speed to breach time, space, and universal barriers 158 215.

When the Justice League was stranded in the Marvel Universe, Barry’s internal Speed Force reserves rapidly depleted because that universe lacked the force entirely. He drove it to its limit to open a spatiotemporal channel home, sacrificing himself as the energy shattered the barriers of time and the universe 158.

Peter later rewound Earth to the altered timeline surrounding Barry’s sacrifice and collected the Speed Force remnants that had scattered after Barry’s disintegration. These remnants would otherwise have gradually faded from the timeline over immeasurable time 162 163.

Reed Richards and his counterparts integrated the collected energy into the Multiverse Transporter. The process required containing its erratic movement, regulating it with a particle field, and shattering it into particles with a faster-than-light accelerator before it could merge with the device’s power source 170. The resulting transporter crossed the Cosmic Barrier and opened access toward the DC Multiverse 171.

Peter subsequently harvested additional Speed Force from a conduit created during another timeline reversal, and Reed’s group continued researching the energy and attempting to replicate it for future channels to the DC Universe 181 210.

Super-Speed Empowerment

The Speed Force is the source of a speedster’s extraordinary movement and enables its users to defy ordinary physical laws.

Limitations & Risks

• In the Marvel Universe, the Speed Force does not naturally exist; a speedster’s reserves are consumed without replenishment 158.
• The remnant recovered by Peter was initially considered non-renewable and potentially sufficient for only one inter-universal channel 170.
• Its active nature can destabilize machinery, causing violent vibrations and energy-system anomalies when integrated into technology 170 171.
• Excessive use to alter time can destabilize timelines and carry consequences beyond the user’s control 215 232.
• The Great Darkness can consume Speed Force energy. Although the force can contact and temporarily counter dimensional darkness, the darkness uses it as nourishment and becomes stronger 219 221.
