Background / History
Barry Allen is one of several alternate versions of the Flash connected through the Speed Force. The Speed Force dimension allows its users to cross realities, encounter counterparts from different timelines, and potentially travel through time; Barry repeatedly learns that altering time carelessly carries unpredictable consequences. 220 232
One Barry attempts to reverse a dying universe’s timeline rather than rely on the dangerous Cosmic Treadmill plan. He reaches a timeline breakpoint but cannot locate the origin of the darkness, then encounters an emotionless blue figure who insists that his efforts are futile. Barry returns having failed to change the past, but becomes more determined to save the universe. 215 216 217
A younger Barry is brought to the Justice League Watchtower after the League needs Speed Force energy to open a Space Teleportation Gate. Despite exhaustion, he runs around the station’s acceleration track until the gate is powered, proving his potential to the League. 217
When dark-energy tentacles seize the younger Barry at the gate, he releases his Speed Force at Cyborg’s instruction and temporarily neutralizes their pull. While unconscious afterward, he meets a more mature future self in the Speed Force dimension; the future Barry passes on knowledge of the approaching Multiversal crisis and improved Speed Force applications. 219 220 224
Appearance
Barry is typically depicted in a close-fitting Flash battle suit and is accompanied by electrical energy while using the Speed Force. Different variants manifest different lightning colors. 172 220 232
- TV-series Barry wears a red suit and produces red-and-yellow lightning. 172 232
- Young Barry is associated with silver-white lightning. 217 232
- Future Barry appears in a Flash uniform surrounded by golden lightning. 219 220
- Zombie Flash is created after dark energy consumes Barry’s body and stains him with darkness. 222
Personality
Barry is compassionate, idealistic, and exceptionally willing to endanger himself for strangers. He agrees to help save a universe that is not his own because he cannot accept watching an entire world be destroyed. 220
He initially doubts whether he is qualified to bear the responsibility of saving the Multiverse, especially as an inexperienced speedster. Rather than abandon the mission, he seeks out a more experienced alternate Barry and entrusts him with the crisis. 224 232
Even after learning that a sacrifice may be required, Barry conceals that possibility from his allies and intends to bear the cost himself. His resolve remains intact while operating the Cosmic Treadmill beyond his physical limits. 229 248 250
Abilities & Skills
Speed Force Connection
Barry draws power from the Speed Force, which grants extreme speed and produces lightning-like energy.
- Can run fast enough to circle the Justice League Watchtower’s tens-of-thousands-of-meters track in under a second. 217
- Generates enough energy through sustained running to activate teleportation gates, Multiverse connection devices, and cosmic-scale machines. 217 236 248
- Can exceed his normal limits, though doing so places destructive pressure on his body. 250
- His speed and access to the Speed Force can diminish when separated from its source. 158
Dimensional and Temporal Travel
The Speed Force can serve as a bridge between timelines and parallel universes.
- Can enter the Speed Force dimension after developing sufficient control. 232
- Can open and maintain Speed Force tunnels for allies travelling between universes. 229 240
- Attempts to reverse time by running at superluminal speed and navigating the timeline. 215 216
- Time alteration is hazardous; Barry fails to find a point where the darkness can be removed from the timeline. 215 216
Molecular Vibration
Barry can vibrate at high frequency to pass through solid matter.
- Uses rapid vibration in an attempt to phase through Peter Parker. 226
- Learns that the technique can fail against sufficiently durable targets. 226
- Gains a more refined understanding of phasing after receiving knowledge from his future self. 224
Speed Force Lightning
More experienced versions of Barry can shape their Speed Force energy into direct attacks or defensive power.
- Young Barry gathers Speed Force in his arm and fires a lightning strike powerful enough to cause a road-shattering explosion. 237
- Barry’s released energy can counteract the pulling force of dark-energy tentacles. 219
- Future Barry condenses his remaining Speed Force into golden lightning and sends it through a Teleportation Gate as a warning and potential countermeasure. 222
Accelerated Recovery
Barry recovers from physical strain and injury faster than ordinary humans.
- Regains consciousness quickly after severe Speed Force exhaustion. 224
- Can recover from injuries caused by high-speed impact, though serious damage still prevents him from immediately returning to top speed. 226 227
Relationships
- Batman / Bruce Wayne — Recruits young Barry to the Watchtower and entrusts him with powering the Space Teleportation Gate; later relies on Barry as a key component of the Multiversal defense plan. 217 248
- Superman / Clark Kent — Supports Barry after his failed time-reversal attempt, refuses to abandon him when dark energy drags him toward a gate, and fights alongside him during the crisis. 217 218 238
- Cyborg / Victor Stone — Provides technical guidance for devices powered by Barry’s Speed Force and instructs him to discharge his energy against the dark tentacles. 217 219 236
- Peter Parker / “Homelander” — Initially blocks Barry’s urgent attempt to leave and overwhelms him in a race; afterward, they exchange information and work together to recruit allies against the crisis. 226 227
- Kara Zor-El / Supergirl — An ally recruited by Barry to face the Multiversal threat; she and Barry bring Peter to seek Clark Kent’s help. 227 228
- Future Barry Allen — An older counterpart who warns young Barry about the Great Darkness, transfers Speed Force knowledge, and entrusts him with protecting the Multiverse. 219 224
- TV-series Barry Allen — A more experienced counterpart who mentors young Barry in Speed Force travel, combat applications, and the dangers of changing time. 232
- The Monitor — Warns Barry of the Anti-matter crisis and later provides the Multiverse Treadmill used in Barry’s final effort to save the surviving universes. 226 248
Story Role / Major Arcs
Dying Universe and the Great Darkness
Barry attempts to save a universe threatened by an all-consuming darkness. His time-reversal effort fails at a timeline breakpoint, but he refuses to retreat and agrees to power the Cosmic Treadmill and Speed Force Cannon. 215 216 220
After transferring his remaining Speed Force through a gate, this future Barry is consumed by dark energy and transformed into Zombie Flash. Before dissipating, he warns his younger self that the Great Darkness threatens the entire Multiverse. 222 224
Becoming the Justice League’s Flash
Young Barry powers a Space Teleportation Gate intended to rescue the missing Flash, only for dark energy to attack him through the opening. He survives by releasing his Speed Force, meets his future self while unconscious, and awakens with new knowledge and a greater sense of responsibility. 217 219 224
Multiversal Recruitment
After receiving a warning from the Monitor, Barry travels through the Speed Force to recruit heroes from other universes. Peter Parker joins him, followed by Kara Zor-El and Clark Kent; Barry then leads the group to recruit another Superman. 226 227 229 230
Barry later encounters an experienced TV-series counterpart in the Speed Force. The two exchange knowledge, and the younger Barry asks the more experienced Flash to take responsibility for saving the Multiverse. 232
Crisis on Infinite Earths
Barry becomes central to the surviving heroes’ plan against the Anti-matter Energy Wave. His Speed Force activates the Multiverse Connection Device and allows the heroes to travel to threatened realities. 236 240
At the Origin Place, Barry runs on the Monitor’s Multiverse Treadmill to power the Cosmic Resonance Device across the surviving universes. When the plan cannot finish quickly enough, he deliberately enters a super-limit state despite the damage it inflicts on his body, choosing sacrifice over allowing more universes to fall. 248 250

“For you, for all universes, even if I have to sacrifice my life, I will never retreat or give up!” 248
