| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Observation Haki / Mantra, second stage | 140 | Enel states that he naturally comprehended Mantra shortly after taking control of Sky Island, around two years earlier. Combined with the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, it allowed his perception to cover an entire island. 140 |
| Awakened Logia | 148 | His Rumble-Rumble Fruit awakening changes his essence into lightning, making Elementalization passive and rendering him nearly invincible against opponents without Armament Haki. 148 |
Background
Enel ruled Sky Island as its self-proclaimed god after destroying his hometown, Birka. He regarded subordinates as disposable pawns, though he retained four God’s Enforcers because they had also awakened Mantra. 136 140
When Roy’s fleet arrived to unite the Shandia and Angel Island residents, Enel detected the disturbance through Mantra and chose to confront the intruders personally. Certain that no mortal could oppose lightning, he dismissed Roy’s group despite sensing their strength. 131
Enel fought Crocodile and then Roy on God’s Island. Roy suppressed Enel’s Observation Haki, withstood his lightning, returned lightning against him to shatter his claim to divine authority, and ultimately defeated him. Roy then appeared over Angel Island holding Enel, completing the transfer of power as Sky Island’s new god. 133 138
Afterward, Enel joined Roy’s crew. During the crew’s two-year period in hiding, he repeatedly fought Crocodile; their rivalry evolved into mutual appreciation, though both continued competing for the crew’s second-strongest position. 148
Appearance
Enel is a lean, bare-chested man whose appearance stands apart from the winged inhabitants of Sky Island. He wears a headscarf and earrings, and has elongated earlobes that reach his chest. 132
- Four small tomoe-marked drums are embedded behind his back. 132
- His back is decorated with gold, contributing to Hody Jones mistaking him for a Celestial Dragon. 219
- He carries a Golden Staff that can reshape into weapons and armor. 134 222
Personality
Enel is intensely proud, cold-blooded, and contemptuous of anyone he considers weak. His power over lightning and island-wide Mantra convinced him that he was a god, and he routinely frames the difference between himself and others as the difference between gods and mortals. 131 220
His confidence becomes unstable when confronted with abilities beyond his understanding. Roy’s suppression of his Mantra, use of lightning, and apparent return from death progressively dismantle Enel’s self-image, driving him into anger, desperation, and finally defeat. 134 136
Despite his arrogance, Enel recognizes strength. He follows Roy’s orders, intercepts Akainu so Roy can withdraw, and later joins Roy and Crocodile in surrounding Issho. 194 238
Abilities & Skills
Rumble-Rumble Fruit
Enel is an awakened user of the Goro Goro no Mi, Model: Nika, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that grants dominion over lightning. 151
- Transforms his body into lightning for extreme mobility and Elementalization. 133 194
- Awakening makes his essence lightning itself; Elementalization becomes passive. 148
- Can re-form after being dispersed by attacks such as Pluton’s Annihilation Ion Cannon. 409
- His awakened state is nearly invincible against opponents lacking Armament Haki. 148
- His lightning alone cannot defeat another lightning-elemental body through ordinary elemental attacks. 134
Lightning Techniques
- 60 Million Volt: Thunder Dragon — Creates a massive lightning attack shaped as a thunder dragon. 135
- 200 Million Volt: Thunder God — Transforms Enel into a giant thunder entity by drawing surrounding electricity into himself. 135
- Thunder Explosion — A close-range self-destructive detonation used after restraining an opponent. 135
- Thunder Armor: Heavy Current Burst — Covers his body in lightning and reinforces his physical strikes; his Golden Staff melts into a golden bracer during its use. 222
- Lightning Trident — A lightning attack that severely injured Jinbe. 222
- Ten Thousand Thunderbolts: Thunder Judgement — His ultimate move, used to weaken Pluton’s protective barrier. 409
Observation Haki / Mantra
Enel possesses exceptional Observation Haki, known on Sky Island as Mantra.
- Developed it naturally after his mind became one with Sky Island. 140
- Uses the Rumble-Rumble Fruit to extend his perception across an entire island. 131
- Reached the second stage of Observation Haki without formal exposure to Haki. 135
- Was vulnerable to Roy’s superior Observation Haki, which suppressed his Mantra and controlled his movements. 135
Armament Haki
Enel possesses powerful Armament Haki in addition to his Observation Haki. 222
- Uses it alongside lightning-enhanced physical combat. 222
- His awakened Logia state is especially dangerous because opponents require Armament Haki to reliably threaten him. 148
Equipment
- Golden Staff — Enel’s weapon; it can become a trident or melt into a golden bracer for Thunder Armor. 134 222
Relationships
- Roy / Nightmare — Captain and the man who defeated Enel, shattered his claim to godhood, and brought him into the Phantom Sword Pirates. Enel later blocks Akainu to cover Roy’s withdrawal. 131 138 194
- Crocodile the Sand — Former rival whose repeated battles with Enel developed into mutual appreciation; both contest the crew’s second-ranked position. 133 148
- Jinbe — Opponent on Fish-Man Island. Enel overwhelmed him with Thunder Armor, lightning-enhanced physical strength, and a lightning trident. 222
- Hody Jones — Hody captured and insulted Enel, then was struck down after underestimating him. 219 220
- Wyper and the Shandia — Initially regarded Enel as an insurmountable natural disaster; Enel’s defeat enabled Roy’s takeover of Sky Island. 131 136 138
- Akainu — Enel intercepted the Marine Admiral at Sabaody, fighting while retreating and surviving with severe injuries. 194 195
